I found some images from the Ministry of Transportation showing some of their accomplishments on the National Road Project in 2016. These are all from the ministry and are therefore public domain.

How do they keep the sand from covering the roads? Just having wind over a flat surface or is it done manually?

I'm not sure to be honest. For the most part it seems to stay away on its own, even without barriers. The roads tend to get really dirty though in desert areas with Beduins (mostly near the border with Libya and Sinai) as they tend to drive on and off road with their pickup trucks, dragging sand with them.

Sand gets blown off the road by the drag from vehicles. But it would seem more efficient to elevate the road slightly. Here in Norway we do that to keep the snow from piling up, when the road is elevated it just blows off.

A ten lane section of the Cairo - Marsa Matruh motorway. Some reports say it opened in June 2016 but satellite imagery shows uncompleted sections until the first quarter of 2017.

Galala road

Here are some pictures of the new Galala road (the road off the Katameya-Sokhna road to Zaafarana) You can use this road instead of the very curvy coastal road (single carriage way with 2 lanes) from Sokhna to Zaafarana. The distance is approx the same, but you save a bit of time and can drive more relaxed and safe.

Cairo

Development on the west side of Cairo. First they build new houses and then they tear them down again a few years later for a motorway.
