Part of new Desaru road opens toll-free
2009/09/11 By Syed Umar Ariff

JOHOR BARU: Those travelling to celebrate Hari Raya in the east coast of Johor will be happy to know that the first phase of the Senai-Pasir Gudang-Desaru Expressway is now open to road users.

Better still, there will be no toll charges for a month starting yesterday, announced Works Minister Datuk Shaziman Abu Mansor during the expressway's opening ceremony.

The first of the two phases of the highway stretches about 50km of the total 77km. It stretches from Senai to Ulu Tiram, Cahaya Baru, Tanjung Langsat and Pasir Gudang.

The second phase of the project would be from Cahaya Baru and Bandar Penawar to Desaru.

Shaziman said upon completion of both phases, which will cost over RM1.4 billion, by the first quarter of next year, the highway would significantly shorten travelling time to Desaru from Johor Baru.

"Normally, it takes more than two hours to reach Desaru from here. However, once work is completed, it will only take 45 minutes."

Shaziman said the toll rate for the highway, which is managed by concessionaire Senai-Desaru Expressway Bhd (SDEB), would not differ much from the rate charged by Projek Lebuhraya Utara Selatan Berhad (PLUS) which is a sen for every 13.96km.

"The rate will be around the same as PLUS. There will not be much difference."

Tan Sri Hamdan Mohamad, a member of the SDEB board of directors, said the highway was expected to ease the Pasir Gudang Highway congestion and facilitate travel for those working in Senai, Tanjung Langsat and Ulu Tiram.

"Other than shortening the time taken to travel from one point to another, the road is also expected to help spur the economy of Johor's southern region," he said.

It is expected that 20,000 to 30,000 motorists will be using the expressway daily.

Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman, who was also present at the opening, said the expressway was the first in the country to use the Pollutant Removal System, designed to prevent water pollution in the Layang water catchment area.

The system filters chemicals should any be spilled from a vehicle using the expressway.

Senai-Desaru highway to begin operation early next year
March 4th, 2010, 02:16 AM

On duty: Abdul Ghani (wearing songkok) during his working visit to the Kota Tinggi parliamentary constituency on Tuesday.

KOTA TINGGI: The final 27km stretch of the Senai-Desaru Expressway (SDE) will be fully operational by early next year.

Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman announced that the remaining stretch of the highway, including the 1.7km-long bridge spanning Sungai Johor, would be accessible to the public by February or March next year.

“The highway should have been fully operational by the middle of this year but its concessionaire, Senai-Desaru Expressway Bhd, notified us that there would be a delay due to some technical matters.

“We have been told that the construction of the cable bridge requires a lot of attention,” he said.

Abdul Ghani said the highway would be a blessing to the people in the area as not only would it connect them to the city but it would also reduce travel time between Johor Baru and Desaru.

“The opening of the remaining stretch of the highway will bring many benefits to locals and tourists,” he said during his working visit to the Kota Tinggi parliamentary constituency on Tuesday.

He also said that roads within Iskandar Malaysia, especially in Johor Baru city, should be completed by July 2011.

Abdul Ghani said that he understood that many people had been inconvenienced by construction work along the busy city roads and promised that this would be completed soon.

“Many of the roads around the city and leading out of town, including Jalan Johor Baru - Kota Tinggi and Jalan Skudai, should be completed by the middle of next year,” he said.

Senai-Pasir Gudang-Desaru expressway toll starts tomorrow
By B.K. SIDHU Saturday July 9, 2011
http://biz.thestar.com.my/news/story...&if_height=643

The 77km Senai-Pasir Gudang-Desaru Expressway
now provides easy access to Desaru.

PETALING JAYA: Collection of toll will begin for the 77km Senai-Pasir Gudang-Desaru Expressway tomorrow and the main feature of the road is the single-plane cable stay-bridge which at 500 m is one of the longest in the world.

The longest is the Tsurumi Tsubasa bridge in Yokohama in Japan with a mid-span of 510 m.

Senai-Desaru Expressway Bhd chief executive officer Mustaza Salim said it took a lot of careful designing and planning to construct the bridge which has become iconic in the southern part of Peninsular Malaysia.

“It is quite difficult to build the single plane bridge compared with a double-plane bridge as the single plane requires specialised technology but we wanted to do something different. That is why we settled for a single plane cable stay bridge,” he said.

A single plane bridge is suspended by cables in the centre of the bridge whilst a double has two rows of cables by the sides like the Penang Bridge.

The company won the 33-year concession from the Government to build, operate and transfer the expressway which includes the single plane bridge in 2005.

It took nearly six years to complete the project and the expressway was open to commuters on June 10.

The cost of the expressway was RM1.4bil which was funded via debt and equity and a loan facility from the Islamic Development Bank infrastructure fund.

The toll rate ranges from RM3.70 to RM22.30 depending on the distance travelled and for now the company will only be able to earn enough for its operations and to service its debt obligations. Dividends can only be expected after eight years.

The expressway connects Senai, Ulu Tiram, Cahaya Baru, Pasir Gudang and Penawar and it is the third longest toll highway in the country.

It also provides easy access to Desaru, a tourist spot which had seen a decline in tourists due to issues of accessibility over the years.

With this new expressway the state hopes the number of tourist visiting Desaru will increase.

Murtaza said there were about 30,000 vehicles using the expressway on weekends.

“During the construction of the bridge, Ranhill had to overcome numerous challenges including unpredictable weather conditions. Construction works were interrupted due to strong winds and heavy rain which made it dangerous for welding.

“Cost wise it is more economical to build a single plane bridge compared with double-plane but in terms of design the single plane is much more difficult,” he said.

The company collaborated with a Danish company for the technology and a Canadian firm for bridge trackers.

The bridge was planned and constructed with environmental considerations in mind.

It crosses Sungai Johor via Pulau Juling and Tanjong Penyabong with a length of 1.7km and the area is surrounded with mangrove forest reserves, fish farms and kelongs. Construction activities for the bridge were minimised within the river to protect the marine life in the river. In the design of the bridge, navigational considerations were taken into account. The central span is 500 m wide with an air draft of 24 m.
