It also already has an athletics stadium, and like what the London Olympic stadium will become...is completely underused and vacant the majority of the time.

See no one has posted the new wembley stadium. Sure it has never really been used but it can still be layed out and used.

Camp Randall in Madison, WI had a track only ten years ago. I cannot find a picture of it in recent times, but a couple of old ones are below:

Other than Wembley, none were built with public funds though, so it's not like the city is being wasteful.

As it stands, the Olympic stadium would be dreadful for football. The lower tier is far to shallow to offer a decent view, and despite the worsts seats being no worse than Wembley's worst seats, it's best seats are much further away the Wembley's best.

West Ham just don't have the support to come anywhere close to filling it, and the far smaller Crystal Palace national athletic stadiums hints that athletics will never fill it again.

Perhaps it could have hosted the play-off finals, but it was always difficult to see a viable future for it beyond that.

In short, it's not seen as a scandal that the country could lose it's only athletics stadium holding more than 20,000 or so for the simple reason that the country doesn't need one.

You'd need to build a false floor raised up over the lower tier as there isn't enough room for a track currently. Technically it did remove a track, but it got removed at the planning stage, before anything had been built.

Sure I read somewhere that it can still host track events.

a quick look should make it clear there's nowhere near enough room to fit a track in.

"A "platform system" has been designed to convert the stadium for athletics use, but its use would decrease the stadium's capacity to approximately 60,000. No athletics events have taken place at the stadium, and none are scheduled."
