The Dutch architecture in this period was dominated by two major styles:

- Amsterdamse School brickwork, ornaments, organic, expressionist

- Het Nieuwe Bouwen "the new building", open, glass, rectangles, modernist

Lots of buildings that were constructed in this period are protected monuments nowadays. Especcially the "Amsterdamse school"-architecture is quite unique for the Netherlands, although there are some excamples in Belgium.

Examples of Amsterdam School:

- Amsterdam

- The Hague

- Kootwijk

- Kuinre

- Utrecht

Examples of Het Nieuwe Bouwen:

- Rotterdam

- Heerlen

- Hilversum

- Utrecht

Personally I think that pre-war modernism is one of the best styles in architecture ever. It's just not getting old - always looks modern.

Warsaw Train Station (does not exist any more, destroyed in 1944), there aren't many pictures on the internet.

From time of German occupation

Project

Fascinating mix of modernism and art deco.

Do you know where the location of the train station was back then?

Both styles are magnificent. In my opinion the 20s and 30s are in architectural way the best years we've ever had in the Netherland. Too bad it stopped after the 30s. In the beginning of the Wederopbouw (rebuild architecture) after WW2 some architects looked back and implemented some pre-WW2 details in their buildings, but that stopped in the 60s defenitely. Since then everything is functionalism-modernism. Even nowadays most architects still think 'modern'.

Time for a revolution and get back to the 20s! Back to the days of real architecture.
