According to an article in the Commercial Appeal, the University Of Memphis is preparing to start construction of its Community Health Building on the Park Ave. campus. http://www.commercialappeal.com/news...llion-project/
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Info & rendering from http://www.memphis.edu/chbuilding/about.php

Quote:
The new 177,000-square foot, $60 million Community Health Building will build upon the rich history of the University's Park Avenue Campus as the former home of the Kennedy VA Hospital by creating a health campus that unites the faculty and facilities of both the Loewenberg School of Nursing and the School of Communication Sciences and Disorders. The beautiful, 145-acre campus holds a vibrant future as the home of several health-related schools and colleges where interdisciplinary research initiatives can be further developed and clinical and community services can be expanded.

Not sure why the MBJ continues to headline "build" instead of "renovate", etc., but here's an updated article with a rendering of a made-over 813 Ridge Lake Blvd.

In addition to Hino's major expansion in Marion, I also came across this website touting the area. With Port Of West Memphis expansion, new rail yard facility, infrastructure & interstate highway upgrades & major industrial manufacturing investment/ development, I do believe the days of sleepy eastern Arkansas' Memphis region being overlooked are quickly coming to an end. Although, this maybe old news to some, it certainly became higher profile with the announcement & state approval of Big River Steel's $1.1 Billion development in Osceola.

Marion, Ark. Poised to Become the South’s Next Automotive Cluster
Southern Auto Corridor

Quote:
“We are in good shape to a potential site for the next Toyota assembly plant,” said Kay Brockwell, director of Marion’s Department of Economic Development. “Our Supersite is still available and there are Toyota suppliers locating throughout the Eastern Arkansas region.”... Marion has planned districts for office complexes and corporate headquarters, as well as for manufacturing and distribution operations. The Railport Industrial Park, for example, is 2,100 acres bounded on the north by the Union Pacific Intermodal Railport. The property, designated an Arkansas Enterprise Zone, is located within three miles of both Interstates 55 and 40, four miles from a municipal airport, eight miles from the Port of West Memphis, 16 miles from the Port of Memphis, and 20 miles from the Memphis International Airport.

Overton Square garage opens
Memphis Biz Journal

Quote:
The city opened its 451-space parking garage in Overton Square this past weekend... “We knew the city of Memphis needed a location to build a storm water detention facility for Midtown, and we were happy that Overton Square had a spot they could use to relieve residents and businesses of the flooding problems created by Lick Creek,” Carey D. White, Loeb’s senior vice president asset management, said... Since buying Overton Square last year, Loeb has pushed the shopping area’s occupancy rate to more than 82 percent in a relatively short period of time.

Graceland expansion could approach $130 million
Memphis Biz Journal

Quote:
In November, New Jersey-based National Entertainment Collectibles Association and New York-based Authentic Brands Group LLC acquired the majority share of Elvis Presley Enterprises, while entering into a partnership with Lisa Marie Presley to manage Graceland. Despite not being from Memphis, Joel Weinshanker, president and chief operating officer of NECA, said the goal is to have the project designed and built by local architects and general contractors. Of the 120 acres owned by Elvis Presley Enterprises around Graceland, only 43 acres are developed. That not only gives them room to build, but ensures work can be done without disturbing visitors to the existing area.

Noticed Google Maps updated TN-385/I-269. Made a little diagram that notes some of the major upgrades to the rest of the Greater Memphis expressway which is really starting to show its expanse. And don't forget Mississippi's completion of the I-269 outer loop. That coupled with the East Memphis 4-stack are apparently the largest single contracts ever awarded by TDOT & MS's equivalent.

Klondike and Smokey City neighborhoods get city attention as a result of Crosstown plans
Memphis Flyer

Quote:
Today, Klondike and the neighboring Smokey City community are considered food deserts, and the neighborhoods are home to vacant lots and blighted properties. But city Housing and Community Development director Robert Lipscomb is hoping to piggyback off of the planned Crosstown development, which will kick off construction next year just a few blocks south of Klondike and Smokey City, to revitalize the two North Memphis neighborhoods.

What's happening inside the Chisca Hotel?
Memphis Biz Journal

Quote:
From the outside, the $24 million redevelopment of the Chisca Hotel in Downtown Memphis is a yawner. That's going to change in 2014. The Chisca's owners are currently cleaning up the historic 300,000-square-foot building at 272 S. Main for $3 million, prepping the former hotel for construction crews to begin improvements in the first quarter of 2014.

This is what Memphians will drive across in the future when taking I-69 to Shreveport, LA or Houston, TX. Two 450ft towers supporting a 1,500ft cable-stayed span.

Charles W. Dean Bridge
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Quote:
The Charles W. Dean Bridge, known before 1999 as the Great River Bridge, will be a cable-stayed bridge carrying Interstate 69 and U.S. Route 278 across the Mississippi River between Arkansas City, Arkansas and Benoit, Mississippi. The Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department began land acquisition for the project in October 2006. Preliminary studies indicate the bridge would be 4.25 miles (6.85 km) long, with one 1500-foot (460 m) cable-stayed span over the main channel of the river supported by two 450-foot (137 m) towers. A cost of $565 million has been estimated...

Project Status: The environmental analysis process and design are complete. Since October 2006, Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD) has been acquiring properties needed for the bridge and the approach roadways on the Arkansas side of the river. In its 2011-2013 Statewide Transportation Improvement Plan, the AHTD intends to begin construction of the Arkansas approach roadways and structures in 2011, subject to funding. Construction of the bridge and the remaining connections is contingent upon funding.

City officials are working on plans to kick-start the dormant Washington Bottoms project at Poplar Avenue and Cleveland Street in Midtown. Memphis Housing and Community Development director Robert Lipscomb confirmed that he is working on the effort but said he was not yet able to release detailed information on the project. “Working on something, but not at liberty to discuss right now,” Lipscomb said in an email response to a reporter’s questions. When asked if his work could revive the project, Lipscomb said, “Yes, for sure.”
