Veteran actor Lakshmi dies

http://www.thehindu.com/arts/cinema/...?homepage=true

She played the screen mother for several heroes, from MGR to Kamal Hassan
Veteran actor S.N. Lakshmi, whose performance was marked by refreshing restraint, passed away here on Sunday. She was 85.

Fans of Tamil cinema cannot forget the kleptomaniac paatti in ‘Michael Madana Kama Rajan' (MMKR), or the concerned mother-in-law in ‘Mahaanadi' very easily. Her portrayal of the characters was not just highly entertaining, but also very convincing.

Beginning her journey in Tamil theatre and then moving on to films, Lakshmi worked on a style that showed moderation rather than melodrama, something that was not very common among artistes of her generation.

In her career spanning over seven decades, she performed with stars such as M.G.Ramachandran, Sivaji Ganesan, Gemini Ganesan and Nagesh in some of their best films, and later with top actors of the next generation, particularly Kamal Haasan. He is said to have had great confidence in her, periodically giving her fascinating roles.

41-days Box-Office Collection report for NANBAN

Vijay's Nanban had collected a total of Rs.156 Crores at the end of 41-days at Box-office and still managed to run in all the theaters it released, when Vettai is nomore in major theaters itself.

http://www.movierating.co.in/2012/02...ox-office.html

Some of the Records of NANBAN :

* Nanban garnered the second biggest opening for a Tamil film

* Nanban has had the highest number of shows in a single day at Mayajaal multiplex in Chennai to date

* The film opened in nearly 625 screens in Tamil Nadu, including 27 screens in Chennai city.

* It also managed to release in 25 screens in UK.Nanban became the first Tamil film to be released with French subtitles in France. It also released in US, Malaysia and Singapore.

Telegu version "Snehithidu",though getting a critical response is doing good at Box-office so far.

Ilayathalapathy Vijay should analyse his weak-areas first and try to convince his haters, especially VOS aalunga....For a good movie like Nanban ,Some people in the film industry itself(dont remember his name) are giving false impressions..!! But the movie proved its worth silently..

Nanban's success should be given to Shankar..

Exactly, for Nanban credit should go to Shankar.

Vijay is not bad, he has that screen presence. But general public cannot stand his dated, mindless one man shows. Other than Nanban only movie i liked was Sachin (nice interactions with vadivelu) and may be lil bit of pokkiri.

He shines when he is Subtle and in songs like irrukkana.! he is a big flop when he does that punch dialog and beats up the city dadha.!

+1.

In nanban, he tried imitating Aamir in many places. Nanban cant match 3 Idiots, still i liked it. I thought he could have tried his originality like how he did in Sachin. Vijay+Vadivelu combination in Sachin is one of the best.. Forest Research Institute(Dehradun) came as Ideal Engineering College in Nanban.

I watched Nanban shooting once when those guys were going with that Volvo car for searching places. Road with Wind mills area is very close to my native in Pollachi. Even they showed Road on top of Azhiyar dam as Coimbatore-Ooty road. Literally laughed on seeing that.

Didnt notice the Madurai AP. Thanks.. I was laughing when i saw that Coimbatore-Ooty road. Need to see whether Shankar has shown some Valparai tea estates as the one in Ooty in movie.

When i saw the movies, i felt that its just exact copy of 3 Idiots. Looks like same Volvo XC60 Car is used in both movies right?

I dont wish to see his face anymore in this thread... please put in mokkai videos, dumb actor thread.....

Kamal Hassan to act in Enthiran part 2

his is going to be a shocking surprise for Ulaganayagan fans. Earlier in 1998 it was Kamal Hassan who was signed to do Robo(Enthiran) but it was kept aside for technical reasons.

Later in 2011 Rajinikanth acted and it turned out to be blockbuster of the year. But even after that Shankar was keen on making a sequel adds sources but since it requires more strain Rajini wouldn't be preferrred for health reasons.

But with Kamal it can be possbile, also there are possiblities of Rajinikanth to act in Indian sequel. Since Indian story was made keeping the Superstar in mind adds sources.

Seems like director Shankar is going for sequels on the lines of Hollywood films.

Thumbs up Atlast an Official statement for Box-Office Blockbuster NANBAN

Nanban second only to Endhiran!

Quote:
The strong run that Nanban is having in certain circuits even a month after its release has got the distributors raving about the wonders it has performed at the box office. Nanban has shown nothing less than phenomenal performance in the Madurai and Coimbatore belts. The distributors for these areas, Ramesh and Sivakumar, respectively have stated that almost all centres are witnessing repeat audiences and that is sustaining the collections in a big way. The gross collection of Nanban from 4 circuits of Coimbatore is around Rs. 5.5 crores. This is next only to Superstar’s Endhiran that had done a business of Rs. 8.0 crores during its initial month in the same 4 circuits. Yes, a difference of 2.5 crores in a months run in a district between two movies is quite huge. But, one must also take into account the fact that the tickets for Endhiran during the initial week had sold out for Rs. 500 and above while Nanban tickets were in the normal range of Rs 70-100 in both Madurai and Coimbatore. What does this mean? Well, it’s a complex issue of various factors. That a star can command houseful audiences even with tickets selling for Rs.500 is an indication of the crowd pulling power that he has. At the same time, if Nanban has gone on to make nearly 70% of Endhiran’s collection within the same running period, it means that it commanded a lot of repeat audiences, which the distributors say is true. Of course, we should also understand that the lower ticket rates is also a factor in attracting repeat audiences; which is something that Endhiran could not have done with ticket rates hitting the ceiling.

All said and done, the final numbers state one fact; in many circuits the business that Nanban has generated is second only to Endhiran; and it is definitely the highest ever numbers generated by a Vijay starrer; not to forget Jiiva. And, in the midst of Endhiran, Nanban, Rajni and Vijay, we should not forget the one man common to all this- shankar. He has truly emerged as the biggest revenue generating director of the industry.

Nanban is getting more-repeat audiences even after a month of its release in most areas, especially in the belts of Madurai and Coimbatore..!!

The movie was earlier claimed not going well in BO by some sources but the direct interview by Madurai and Coimbatore area distributors cracked those wrong news, being spreaded with an intention to attack Vijay in personal.

Sources claim Nanban's total collection so far as Rs.157 Crores...The movie deserves it...

Karnan Calling Kudos , Great effort to restore one of the all time classics

http://www.thehindu.com/arts/cinema/article2931990.ece

Quote:
Karnan, the 1964 classic from ace filmmaker B.R. Panthulu, returns reformatted in all its technical finesse

Perseverance ought to be Shanthi Chokkalingam's second name. Otherwise what could have spurred Shanthi's Divya Films into pulling out a film made 48 years ago and lending it the latest technical sheen? “I was 10 when I first watched Karnan. Excellent performances, scintillating music, lavish sets, exotic locations … it has everything. And I'm an ardent fan of that great actor Sivaji Ganesan. I felt that Karnan's shelf life shouldn't be curtailed by the dictates of time,” is the reply.

A magnum opus, Karnan goes much beyond being just an engaging entertainer — it is a profound take on the psyche of men and women, albeit legendary. And heading a mammoth cast of illustrious actors is Sivaji Ganesan in the title role.

The restoration process was far from easy. If making a new film takes six months on an average, Shanthi has slogged for more than three years for this project! “Raj TV possessed the rights and went out of the way to help me in this Herculean task. The trust Ravindran of the channel reposed in me laid the foundation for my attempt,” acknowledges Shanthi.

Divya Films was in for a rude shock when they got the print. The picture negatives were to a certain extent salvageable, but the sound negatives had been completely damaged. The entire film had to be re-formatted. Till 10 years ago, cinemas had 35 mm screens with Mono Sound. But today's tech boom offers much viewing variety — RDX, QSC300 and Barco, for instance. Karnan had to be adapted to one of these systems to make screening possible. The first step was to take care of the near-irreparable state of the sound. Digi Beta, DVC Pro, Wav File and Noise Restoration are mere jargon to lay people. But each of these was essential to slowly resurrect the sound of Karnan to the level of DTS 5.1 Surround! “Eureka!” the team wanted to scream in joy when it scaled one hurdle after another, mainly because none in the know gave them any hope of it being possible. “That was when I heard that Mughal-e-Azam had been restored to perfection and re-released,” recalls Shanthi.

So Mumbai was Destination Next. “H.M. Subramanya, an audio engineer with Sangeetha, took it up as a challenge and went all out to accomplish the task.” The picture negatives were scanned and the new sound incorporated. Help came from many a quarter. Pawan of Sindhu Graphics, the DTS Mixing engineers at Prasad Lab, and Easwar, worked with Divya Films for more than six months and saw to it that the project emerged successful. “Screening via the Qube is cost-efficient and has enabled me to go in for release in 50 centres in the State.” As far as Chennai goes, Karnan is to come out in four theatres. “Even securing colour pictures for the promos wasn't easy because though the original film was in colour, the stills weren't, as the 1960s was predominantly an era of Black and White.”

So when Sivaji Ganesan's son Ramkumar said he had assumed it to be a simple process, Shanthi couldn't but smile at the understatement. “The Producers Council and diehard fans of Ganesan such as YGee Mahendra have also supported the venture in many ways.”

Shanthi pauses for a moment and adds, “I want youngsters, who don't give much thought to remarkable yesteryear films, to watch the splendour of Karnan. They should understand those extraordinary endeavours of yore.”

It was filmmaker Rama Narayanan who suggested a trailer release for Karnan. “The process of cutting a teaser baffled me, I tell you. Sync was a tough proposition. And everything about the film is so good that I didn't know what to highlight,” smiles Shanthi.

If the restoration itself has been so arduous, the difficulties the film's producer and director, B.R. Panthulu, must have undergone while making the film are unimaginable. “At a time when carting people to distant locations was far from easy, how could he have transported a whole contingent to Kurukshetra where he actually shot the war sequences, and to the grand palaces of Jaipur? I'm glad we are bringing out Karnan to commemorate Panthulu's birth centenary.”

Has the three-year toil translated into a perfect viewing experience? “Undoubtedly, Karnan is like any new product. We haven't compromised on any score. It is as if a young, exuberant Sivaji has shot for the film very recently,” laughs Shanthi.
Hoping they will do an international release in US and a DVD release.
