Finally. That part of town is prime real estate. Unthinkable and inexcusable that the current situation continued on for so long. The building from the 50's and that wooden "bridge" connecting it to the Hahnentor was filthy.

Cologne became a bit highrisophobic after the UNESCO threatened to revoke the world heritage status from the cathedral. That was in the 2000's when there were several 100m+ highrises planned on the opposite side of the Rhine. Only the KölnTriangle, which was already u/c, has been built in the end.
There is now a highrise ban for the city centre.

Currently, there is a bit of a motion in the highrise debate and there are some planned or u/c towers again (the highest of which is not more than 90m, though). Here's a list:

Cologneo II | 90 m
status: projected
utilisation: residential

LVR Turm | 73 m
status: projected
utilisation: offices

Opal | 67 m
status: u/c
utilisation: residential

Zurich HQ | 60 m
status: u/c
utilisation: offices

MesseCity 2 | 60 m
status: projected
utilisation: offices

Park View | 60 m
status: projected
utilisation: student accommodation

(picture is only a placeholder; there will be an architectural competition in the next months)

Mülheimer Hafen | some towers in the range 50-70 m
status: projected
utilisation: offices, residential

Deutzer Hafen | some towers in the range 50-60 m
status: projected
utilisation: offices, residential

LUX121 | 57 m
status: projected revitalisation of a former office highrise
utilisation: micro appartments

Holiday Inn | 50 m
status: u/c (revitalisation of a former office highrise)
utilisation: hotel

One Cologne | 50 m
status: projected revitalisation of a former office highrise
utilisation: offices

New casino
Innenstadt / Deutz

Cologne got the concession of the federal state (NRW) to run a casino. The state-owned company Westspiel wants to build a new casino right next to the Deutz railway station and close to the trade fair. They expect the future casino to be the most visited one in Germany.
The architecture competition produced two first prices. The architects are now called to refine their drafts.

  • Architects: Allmann Sattler Wappner (Munich) & AIP (Düsseldorf)
  • Expected annual visitors: 400,000
  • Investment volume: € 23.2 million
  • Start of construction: 2018

Draft 1 (Allmann Sattler Wappner)

Draft 2 (AIP)

The new building will replace this parking lot next to the station:

Rheinboulevard
Innenstadt / Deutz

This one is almost completed. The alley above the stairs has been opened to the public recently. In spring, the open spaces will be vegetated.

The temporary gratings seen on the photos were used for New Year's Eve.

The cobble circle in the front is meant to indicate where a watchtower of the roman fortress Divitia once stood. The surrounding area is still to be vegetated.

Remnants of an old railroad embankment.

Remnants of an old railroad turntable.

Cologne, ten other cities (including Düsseldorf and Bonn) and 13 Kreise (~ counties) want to form a metropolitan area called Metropolregion Rheinland.

The new metropolitan region will have around 8.5 million inhabitants and will be founded on the 20th of February.

The aim is to strengthen the cooperation between the cities, to improve the infrastructure (and merge the transport associations in the long-term), collaborate in terms of research and universities and a common marketing to better attract foreign investors.

Cologne has been chosen for the headquarters of the new metropolitan region.

New bridge over the Rhine
Innenstadt

The master plan for urban development in Cologne from 2008 proposes two new pedestrian bridges over the Rhine.
The one in the north between Ebertplatz and the Rhine Park gained new momentum since an initiative promoted by a former president of the Bundestag is looking for spaces for a museum on migration in Germany. The initiative proposes to include the museum in the lower level of the new bridge.

Great to see Köln constantly improved! Its image (in Germany at least) is still very dire, so it's good to see the efforts. It needs more new classical architecture though to make up for all the war and post-war losses. Many corners of central Köln lack the atmosphere of Germany's oldest metropolis.
