Is that an entirely new structure or a rebuild? It looks very German in its architecture

The facades of the old Direktion are kept, but almost the entire rest of the structure is newly built.

Some impressive hollow structure:

Well yes, maybe not the greatest new construction around. And of course there is that render-reality-gap again.

But at least that long-term waste land on this plot is gone.

Underrated in which ways?

I like the Pandion Balance project. Cologne needs more New Classical projects. The mansarde slate roofs and window shutters look very Rhine-ish (yeah it's Rhenish), perfectly apt for the region. More of such classy stuff please!

People on SSC and elsewhere don't mention Cologne often compared to say Berlin or Munich.

Its not just the photo but the horrible "architecture". Its a huge, flat building with a boring, bright cladding. Cologne needs more quality architecture like the Pandion Balance Project you see above.

It is the photography. It is bauhaus architecture revived.

Photography makes a huge difference

Even the most terribly photographed classical building looks more appealing to me than most glossy modernist buildings.

I'll try to take a nice photo from street level when Holzmarkt 1 is finished.

Rheinboulevard
Last mentioned in Post #39.

The Rhine is having a little bit of floodwater the last days but work continues.

The materials and layout of the Rhine boulevard look very classy, almost classical.
Without any doubt one of the best riverfront redevelopments of recent years. That's the way to go, Köln. Geil!

Anything similar planned for the left Rhine site near the old town area?

Not for me, they are the same (with some exceptions)

There are plans to reshape the left river bank too, but more focussed on the more northern parts between Hohenzollern and Zoo Bridge.
For all I know the city wanted to arrange a competition last year, but I haven't heard anything about that topic lately.
