Some really nice projects... Though I somehow have the feeling, Cologne is copying Hamburg's Hafen City along the Rhine and Berlin's neotraditional residential buildings. It's like I have seen these buildings exactly like that in the other two cities before.

Yes maybe. I haven't had this feeling when walking through Rheinauhafen or HafenCity or so, though.
It was mentioned in this thread somewhere before: Cologne lacks a bit in an own distinguishable vernacular style for modern development yet. Until then the mentioned archetypes wouldn't be the worst models to follow I'd say.

Sidol Lofts

Transformation of the old Sidol factory into offices in the district of Lindenthal.
The building was originally built in the 1920s and has been put under preservation order as it counts as a rare example of international Bauhaus architecture in the Rhineland.

Key Royal

An investor has bought an office block at the ring road next to the Mediapark. While the building towards the ring road is landmarked and therefore will be preserved, there will be a new office construction on the side towards the Mediapark replacing a post-war building.

Looks fantastic!
It fits perfectly to the "other half" of the building on the Ring-side and despite of that it has a great architectural flair. It combines the typical structures of the representative buildings alongside the Ringe with modern elements. Especially the two big balconies with the trees look amazing.

By the way. On the other side of the street this building is under construction right now. Also very pretty.

They used the building shell of an office building which has been there initially. The facade which is forming behind the scaffolding is completely new though. So are the interior fittings, as this is intended to be a residential building in its new life.

The old situation can still be seen on Google Street View here.

Not bad, but the facade structure of the old office building had way more potential. they could easily made a very beautiful neotraditional design with those large floor hights. Now its just an average building...

Chorweiler revitalisation

Chorweiler is situated in the north of Cologne and was build as a satellite town in the 1970s. Today it is considered to be representative for the urban development policy of those days and unsurprisingly is deemed to be a social hotspot.

The city council has now decided that the city's housing association GAG has to buy 1200 residential units which are under forced sale for some years now.
The GAG demanded the revitalisation of those blocks first and the city has promised financial support.

This is what the area looks like today (own photo):

These proposals are the result of a master thesis which the GAG is considering as an archetype for the revitalisation:

The new one is too whacky. I prefer the old miles more.

MesseCity

The MesseCity is a planned office and commercial area. The plot is situated between the trade fair and the Deutz long distance railway station.
Now, the Zurich Insurance Group has announced that they will move their Germany HQ to Cologne and want to build a new building for 2700 employees in the MesseCity which has been considered as the starting shot for this project.
Moreover there will be two new hotels, gastronomy, more offices, retail spaces and probably a cinema.

There will be an architectural competition for the facades in September. The structures will remain the same as in the below pictured renderings.

Some facts:
  • District/Quarter: Innenstadt/Deutz (map)
  • Investment volume: 600 million Euro
  • Area: 135,000 m²
  • Start of construction: early 2016
  • Height of the highrises: 60m

Does anyone know what they're constructing in the Köln-Deutz area, across from the rail tracks and near the Odysseum? They just recently completed a hotel but they're now building several other buildings.

What Holmac said. Moreover there will be a new fire service command centre, the new HQ of the city's housing association and some flats.

Here's a brief panorama of what is planned (basically all the buildings in the lower right corner between the rail tracks except for the police HQ; just ignore that circle):

There are some renderings and more information (German though) about the planned and u/c buildings in the Cologne Forum thread.

Oooh, thanks for replying guys and for the image. I've been wondering for awhile now what's being built there. It's nice to see the city making better use of that land now.

North-South Tunnel

Some weeks ago there was a "Day of Architecture" where you could visit selected buildings and speak with the architects. This year, two of the yet-to-be-opened subway stations on the new north-south line (see here for more) participated, which I visited.

Chlodwigplatz Station

They will add some art to the wall which will make it look like this.

Remnants of an old watchtower.

More photos here.
