I have actually no idea what they are trying to do there.
It's much nicer than the standard style, though!

Hohestrasse 52 is a great building. The old one fit the location, but won't be much of a loss in comparison.

As far as the trade fair building, welcome to the 21st Century!!! That entry roof looks like the MyZeil Mall in Frankfurt if it had more breathing room around the column.

The final designs for the Koelnmesse 3.0 trade fair extension and refurbishment programme are out. JSWD won with a revised submission.
I opened a new thread in the General Urban Developments sub-forum for these projects regarding the total investment volume of €1.15 billion: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=1907247

This is what the new east entrance will look like:

Rheinboulevard
Innenstadt / Deutz

The upper half of the stairs is now open, too. Overall completion is scheduled for September as they found some old foundations from the 1920s which have to be removed for the alley.

Most of the other archaeological findings - such as the foundation of the roman fort Divitia, a medieval church and many more - will be included in the boulevard as Historischer Park Deutz (Historical Park):

The current state of the boulevard:

The guard railing in the middle of the stairs is temporary and will be installed for events or in case of floodwater

The European Aviation Safety Agency is currently occupied in the KolnTriangle, which opened in 2006, meaning the EASA has occupied that skyscraper for just over a decade. The EASA's apparent move to the former Reichsbahndirektion building must be because they had a lease at the KolnTriangle Building which is about to expire, and that lease will not be up for renewal.

Also, what does the term "Direktion" in the building's name mean?

Looks like the "New Berlin Style" has invaded Cologne also. Hopefully there will be more buildings for this city of over 1 million people.

From what I read, the space the EASA had in the KölnTriangle was getting too small for the whole organisation so they decided to move into the Neue Direktion which offers them a lot more floor space.

The name Neue Direktion is derived from Reichsbahndirektion (~ Imperial Train Directorate) which was the name of the building in the past. So Neue Direktion could be translated simply as New Directorate, I guess.

Regarding the "New Berlin Style" - which building are you referring to? I perceive that style as sort of Streamline Moderne which I don't really see coming here in Cologne.

I think that means the EASA probably didn't occupy the entire KolnTriangle skyscraper. I'm guessing that they probably weren't intending to occupy the KolnTriangle long-term, either, whether they used some or all of its floor area. Just a short-term lease?
