The Leela's website says that it is located on the Marina beach stretch. I hope it is indeed on the Marina beach front and not in MRC Nagar as Rasnaboy seems to think.

Marina beach does not have any beach front hotels at present and this will do wonders for the ambience of the place! There are other grand buildings along the Marina and if the Leela comes up as in the picture, it will complement the existing buildings and will be fantastic.

True! The fact that the Marina sprawls a length of 12 km starting from the Cooum delta upto the Adyar Estuary has it that these hotels are located on the Marina beachfront. But the thoroughfare abutting the Marina does not go south beyond the Light House. Thus the Light House marks the end of the "de facto" beachfront.

As you said, maybe these developments could promote the "less famous stretch" of the Marina.

Hilton

Hitton - The progess seems good compared to what I saw around 8 months back. Will it be ready by end 2009?

As regards Marriott, the website says that the hotel will be completed by April 09 - why can these guys update the website; they claim to provide 5 * services, but don't even update their websites...

The page also says that there are only two 7-star hotels in the world at present—the Burj Al Arab in Dubai, UAE and Town House Galleria in Milan, Italy. In addition, it lists the following hotels as 7-stars under construction around the world (including our ITC Grand Chola):

Laucala Island, Fiji
Morgan Plaza, Beijing, China
The Flower of the East, Kish, Iran
The Centaurus Complex, Islamabad, Pakistan
The Pentominium
The Grand Chola, Chennai, India
A complex planned for Metro Manila
The Royalties Castle, Davao City, Philippines

I have been to many star hotels in India, even the ordinary hotel in japan beats them by service top to bottom and in their maintainence.

Surprisingly, all the 7 * projects are in developing countries. Are they self-proclaimed 7* projects or some international organisation has certified them as 7* ??

the articles in Wikipedia cannot be trusted completely as they may be pieces of somebody's perception. therefore these need not be necessarily true. about the grand chola being classified as 7 star, there is no reference citing its authenticity in that wiki link. it is not that the information is definitely false, all i am saying is that it need not be necessarily true.

also, the possibility of hotels being classified as 7 star seems doubtful to me. there are some exotic resorts and hotels around the world which are rated as 5-Star 5-Diamond and i have been to few of them in US and Europe. They are incomparable and their service is superlative. nowhere in India have i seen such quality of service. even the Burj Al Arab officially comes under this classification and i think the Burj Al Arab has a special Platinum Rating for it exquisiteness. it is still not a 7 star. so i am not that optimistic about the grand chola being classified as 7 star.

Though it would be great if it were actually true. it would make us feel really proud that our city, which is considered conservative by the others had the first 7 star hotel in the country.

Officially, there is no 7 Star staus. It is more of a marketing gimmick and one upmanship.

5 Star is the max status. Of late they are trying to add a suffix like Delux to 5 star for exceptionally good ones (not yet official).

Theoritically, if a hotel provides all the facilities as listed, they may get the corresponding star. At present, there is no parameter for people perception / reaction while awarding the status.

Some of the not so highly ranked top notch chain hotels are more popular and have a better occupancy.

You can follow HVS news to know more about these.

Ths Same old story in the mind of the citizens of our country .Whenever our country does something good, extraordinary things people will not beleive and say this is not happening as existing in US or UK,then how come in India .Cha ...its not liKE Japan, you cannot compare with them .If peoples with mindset like this are there ,we would be always under the heels of other developed nations evne when we raise our heads more that them......

I too realised this only after seeing the photograph. I wonder if it really is. Maybe the photographic angle is playing tricks.

Chennai landmark buildings lacks open space around the buildings

This makes even an extraordinary structure looks like an ordinary building,
ITC grand chola is a marvel but look after its completion it is not going to be a land mark like Taj Mumbai the reason is the building front is not lying on the main road around it so it will not be in people's mind.
I am not sure how people perceive the architecture like the side of the building facing the main road etc for important buildings, Cities like Delhi has many buildings facing the road.

Also look the entrance of Siruseri IT park horrible to the core, when we are having buildings like TCS inside the park the entrance should be modern and reflect the high tech activies inside the park,
We do the same mistake we buy elephant but no money for 'Angusum'
