Ideas for hotels missing in Chennai (and India)

While I notice a number of hotels starting in Chennai, most of them are these huge ones. A lot of travelers do not like them. An idea popular in Europe is Boutique Hotel, these are small in size (~30 rooms) but extremely elegant and deluxe quality (4-5 star level). They guarantee personal assistance.

Please see

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boutique_hotel

Examples for such hotels include

http://www.champs-elysees-plaza.com/.../luxury-hotel/
http://www.hotelabbayeparis.com/

Please do not be surprised by them being 4 star, they do not have full restaurant service, that is the main reason. Otherwise, the quality is better than any 5 star hotel.

Of course, such hotels may not be suitable for India.

Yes, they are lot of those types in Australia also. They are for the tourists and not for corporate /business travellers, who go to 4 star / 5 Star hotels.

Good point raised by you is that so many 5* hotels coming up but not sure abt occupancy rates..

Financial City Project and the ever expanding IT/ITES sector should ensure decent occupancy rates. Also, Chennai lacks a world class convention centre. We need it badly....should have exhibitions/conventions regularly and it will also help the hospitality industry...

Looks like they are not updating regularly and UI looks crappy. They might be missing more from other regions.

‘Offer rates’ of Chennai hotels hit by slowdown

Quote:

Though hoteliers in Chennai say that occupancy levels are looking up after the General Election, the ‘offer rates’ seem to have been hit by the slowdown.

As rooms are considered “a perishable commodity”, hotels do their best to sell them by offering “best rates” to their clients.

Most prominent five-star hotels in Chennai, which once commanded premium tariff, now offer 40 to 50 per cent discount on rack rates (published tariff) straight away for even individuals, leave alone corporate clients.

For example, the “best offer rate” for a basic room (for double occupancy) on a week- day at Taj Coromandel comes to Rs 10,000 against the rack rate of Rs 17,000, a discount of over 40 per cent. Other hotels of the Tatas as well as those belonging to groups such as GRT (Radisson), Oberoi (Trident) and ITC Welcome (Sheraton Park and Chola) too offer discounts in the 30-53 per cent range. Besides, the rates are also bundled with buffet breakfast and airport transfer as complimentary offers.

Some hotels, going one step further, also extend ‘happy hour’ at the bar as complimentary.

While this is the story of week days, week-end offers are even cheaper. For example, in the case of Sheraton Park (ITC group), the week-end offer is Rs 1,000 lower than the week-day offer rate of Rs 10,500 against the rack rate of Rs 14,000.

Promising trend

According to Mr Suresh Badlaney, General Manager of Le Meridian, there are positive signs as far as the occupancy level is concerned. From July, the hotel has been witnessing some kind of growth in the occupancy level, “though not to the level we enjoyed two years ago”. He says the trend seems promising, and “the recovery is not far away”. The banqueting business too seems to be getting better. “Almost, every other day we have had some event or the other,” says Mr Badlaney.

Mr Sharad Puri, General Manager of Trident, observes that after the General Election, the situation seems to be improving. “We are actually doing better than what we expected,” says Mr Puri. According to him, corporate travel is “back in business.”

Local Architect CR Narayana Rao website says
Quote:
This is an about-600 key multi-use Development. The Development consists of a Super - Luxury Hotel of about 180 rooms including Presidential and Vice-Presidential Suites, a Five Star Hotel of about 380 rooms and about 80 Service Apartments
so is it a 7 star + 5 star hotel?!!

Hotel Raj Park is not u/c and all. they have just enclosed the land and put a board. thats about it. nothing else seems to be happening there other than rapid development of "vegetation" :p
