I think there are currently three major hotels on OMR- Fortune Select Palms in Thuraipakkam, Aloft in Sholinganallur and the Asiana Hotel in Semmencherry. Are there any others that I have missed?

There are two novotels being built, one inside sipcot and one on OMR.

Thanks. My question though is where on OMR is it coming up? Didn't see any board or a building on OMR suggesting Novotel when I was in Chennai a few months ago.

Chennai is many things to many people but a happening address for posh hotels it was not, at least not till a couple of years ago. Now it appears that every hotel major wants a slice of the city’s upbeat hospitality sector (See: It’s raining hotels). The figures are startling: the number of premium rooms has gone up from 1,800 in FY07 to 3,021, a jump of nearly 65% in less than four years. Another 522 rooms will be added once ITC’s Grand Chola opens next month. By FY15, the number of premium rooms in the city would have risen to about 5,010, or 180%, if all the projects coming up meet their deadlines.

“It’s likely to lead to an oversupply situation, until this incremental supply is absorbed,” says Pavethra Ponniah, analyst, Icra. “It’s also likely to put pressure on ARRs (average room rates).” But, as a developing market with multiple feeder businesses in the manufacturing and servicing sectors, Ponniah feels the city has the potential over the longer term to absorb the glut. In the short to medium term, the Chennai conference and exhibition market is enjoying higher conference traffic, diverted from Hyderabad due to the Telangana-related unrest in the Andhra metro. The southern metro has recovered faster from the slowdown than other Indian cities, due to its proximity to the auto industry and the revival in the IT/ITeS sector.

The India State Ranking Survey 2011 by global hospitality consultancy HVS says Tamil Nadu and Karnataka have an ideal market for hotels based on state expenditure on tourism and the necessary infrastructure to support tourist arrivals. At 68.2%, Chennai’s occupancy rate is better than that of Delhi (66.7%) and Mumbai (62.5%). Sunjae Sharma, general manager, Hyatt Regency, which opened in August last year and will remain the biggest luxury hotel in Chennai till ITC’s Grand Chola launches next month, strikes an optimistic note, “The city has a buoyant industrial sector and the addition of global hospitality players will fuel supply and push demand further.” That will take quite some time. In the meantime, customers have a reason to cheer. The incremental supply in rooms is likely to improve the value for money proposition in the hotel industry in Chennai — if demand is high and there aren’t enough rooms to go around, rates skyrocket without infrastructure to match. That’s no reason for hotels to cheer though.

The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority has ordered the demolition of the helipad on the terrace of the soon-to-be-opened ITC Grand Chola Hotel in Guindy. It was the first helipad in the city to be constructed atop a building but the plan was not approved by the CMDA.

The hotel is now demolishing the state-of-the-art helipad to obtain completion certificate from the CMDA. The certificate, which can be issued only when a building does not flout norms laid down by the government, is required for other licences to be obtained by the hotel.

The hotel management has assured that they would comply with the CMDA directive, a senior CMDA official said. The hotel, which is the largest in the Chennai Metropolitan Area, is likely to be inaugurated next month. The multi-storeyed building (MSB) panel of the CMDA had rejected a revised proposal by the hotel for construction of the helipad a few months ago.

The hotel had initially sought planning permission without helipad and also handed over 10 per cent of around eight acres land to the CMDA as part of the Open Space Reservation. The OSR land was taken over by the Chennai Corporation last year.

After engineers of the Chennai Corporation and officials of Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services on the MSB panel raised objections to the helipad, the hotel resubmitted the plan without showing the helipad, the CMDA official said. As the inauguration drew near, CMDA officials started persuading hotel authorities to demolish the structures that comprised the helipad.

Before the inspection for the process of issuing the completion certificate takes place, the hotel is likely to remove all additions objected to by the MSB panel in the 49-metre high building, the CMDA official added. The officials on the panel had stressed the need for a proper study on the impact of helipad on urban landscape.

Did these worthies ever visit Usman Road? In every building in Bangalore, 19 floors or taller, helipad is a must. It is a different matter that are no helicpoters to use during a fire evacuation.

Exactly. The hotel people have refused money to someone and he / she is showing their power. Now, once the hotel pays up (which it'll do soon), all objection will go, citing some 'modifications' by builder to conform to norms.

If CMDA is so stringent, then how did we end up with lakhs of unauthorized and unregularized construction all over the place with absolutely no hint of any planning?

It is not stupid. High profile business men and head of states will be visiting or staying this hotel. It is a good idea to have a helipad. This way the Chennai traffic police will not block the airport and cause massive jams.

I vote for a helipad in Big hotels, big offices and govt buildings like the assembly.

In what way having an helipad on top becoms hinderance.... EIA?Security?

In my view every multi storied bldg( 14+ flr) shld hav a helipad on top.

1. Rescue operation made easy in case of emergency
2. VVIPs can take d arieal route instead of becoming hinderance to comman man on busy city roads.

You may refer our old discussions on this subject in the same thread(I think).

They are refusing the helipad since the building is low rise and there are lot of old buildings in that area very close to this site.

The glass panes & shutters may get severely disturbed when ever a helicopter lands or takes off.

I do not know how technically it is true.

If there is a big open ground, then the problem may not be there.

Or on top of a tall building.

But the Helipad will be an USP for this hotel.
