It does come across as stupid and even a bit shady, but it probably works for the general population, who might only know a few liveries, never visit the Aviation Herald or Airliners.net, might or might not pay attention to the news and are not interested in aviation.

KOTA KINABALU: Six people are believed to be injured when a Twin Otter aircraft belonging to MASWings, crashed while attempting to take off at 2.5opm from Kudat Airport, about 150km from here.

Three of them are believed to be in critical condition.

The aircraft which was carrying 16 people on a flight to Kota Kinabalu, overshot the runway while trying to take off and ended up beside a vacant house in the nearby Kampung Sin-San.

A Sabah health department spokesperson said six out of the 16 victims from the plane crash this afternoon were treated at Kudat Hospital's accident and emergency department.

"Three of them are treated in red zone, while others are in yellow zone," he told the New Straits Times.

Red zone is a cubicle meant to treat life-threatening condition, while yellow zone is for semi critical.

He said the was a possibility that those who were severely injured would be transferred to hospitals in Kota Kinabalu as there might be a need for better medical facility and experts here.

The department has set up an operations room at Kudat hospital to handle the situation.

Sabah Fire and Rescue Department public relations officer Mohd Affendy Ramin said 10 other passengers received outpatient treatment.

He said they received a distress call at 2.54pm and deployed 10 firefighters who helped to rescue the people onboard.

Malaysia Airlines in a Press statement confirmed that it was their aircraft - DHC6 9M-MDM MH3002 operating from Kota Kinabalu to Kudat which was involved in the 2.50pm incident.

"The aircraft landed short of the runway in Kudat."

"No reported fatalities as of now. Focus of the airline is on the rescue of the passengers and crew."

"We will continue to monitor the situation at the crash site and update the situation," it said.

Meanwhile, Tanjung Kapor Assemblyman Datuk Teo Chee Kang said the aircraft crashed after it failed to take off.
"I was told that the aircraft crashed after it failed to take off. My officers are on the ground and I am urging the authority to get to the root of it," said Teo, who is the State Special Tasks Minister when contacted.

MORE TO COME.

Panel fell off Dreamliner headed from Delhi to Bangalore: report

Quote:
An Air India Dreamliner was on its way from Delhi to Bangalore with 150 passengers when a large panel on its belly fell off, according to the civil aviation regulator or DGCA, which is now investigating the incident.

The plane landed safely in Bangalore on Saturday.

When the panel came undone, a large hole was left in the cargo section , said sources according to the Press Trust of India.

The hole was reportedly noticed by ground staff which inspected the aircraft at the Bangalore airport ahead of its return journey.

A spare panel was flown to Bangalore and fitted on the Boeing 787, which was later declared fit to fly. But the return flight was delayed by over nine hours, according to the Press Trust of India.

"It was not an emergency. There was no safety problem," according to an unnamed source in Air India quoted by the news agency.

Besides long-haul international operations, Air India operates Dreamliners on domestic routes between Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore and Kolkata.

Lao Airlines plane crashes into Mekong river, killing 44

Quote:
(Reuters) - A Lao Airlines plane flying in stormy weather crashed into the Mekong river in southern Laos on Wednesday, killing all 44 people on board, among them nationals of 10 countries.

The virtually new ATR-72 turboprop plane flying from the capital Vientiane crashed at about 4.10 p.m. (0910 GMT) just eight kilometers (five miles) short of its destination Pakse, which is near the borders of both Thailand and Cambodia.

The airline said in a statement it had yet to determine the cause of the crash, in which a senior aviation official said the tail end of Typhoon Nari may have been a factor.

Those killed were mostly Lao nationals. But seven French nationals were also killed, the country's Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said.

South Koreans, Australians, Canadians, Taiwanese, Chinese, Burmese and Vietnamese and five Thais were also among the dead, said Thailand's foreign ministry spokesman, Sek Wannamethee.

That was horrifying to watch for anyone present at that airport or sitting inside that plane. I'm guessing that engine was written off and stripped for parts.

Vietnam Airlines Plane Lands One Wheel Short
Quote:

HANOI, Vietnam – When a Vietnam Airlines flight landed at a local airport on Monday an odd piece of the aircraft had gone missing – one of its front landing wheels.

The airline has since launched an investigation into the missing gear, which was discovered only after the ATR-72 plane and its 41 passengers landed safely in Danang City in central Vietnam.

I wonder how can "a large hole in the cargo section" during flight not be considered an emergency... well I guess that's because a Dreamliner is always safe, regardless of the circumstances

Since you "all understood", explain please, do you mean a gaping hole in the fuselage during flight is normal? And the risk of the panel getting sucked into an engine is also business as usual?
