Incident involving TK.

Looks like a Star Alliance A320 landed without the right gear deployed.

Glad to hear all passengers and crew safe and well.

Some additional info, pics and videos about the TK1878 emergency landing at IST.

Turkish Airlines flight #TK1878 from Milan landed at Ataturk Airport, Istanbul with right engine in fire

Turkish Airlines flight TK1878 from Milan was seen flying through Anatolian side, Instanbul with right engine in flames.

The A320 registered TC-JPE did a first attempt to land at 0723UTC at Ataturk Airport, did a go around and then landed at second attempt at 0741UTC.

The first attempt to land may have caused the serious damage on the right gear and wing. Still unclear if the engine caught fire mid air or during the first attempt to land.

Magong Airports instrument landing system to commence operations in May
29 April 2015
Taipei Times Excerpt

A new instrument landing system that was installed in Penghu after a fatal airplane crash in July last year is scheduled to start operations next month.

The crash of TransAsia Airways Flight GE222 killed 48 people and injured 10 on board.

A preliminary Aviation Safety Council investigation showed that the flight had deviated from its course before it crashed outside Penghus Magong Airport. It also showed that the pilots had requested to land on Runway 20, but was denied permission to do so, because of inclement weather and visibility issues.

The results of the councils preliminary investigation generated a discussion on whether the government needed to upgrade navigational facilities at the nations airports.

The Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) said that previous discussions about acquiring a new instrument landing system had centered on whether it could be used efficiently.

However, after the plane crash the CAA said that all relevant parties agreed that cost should be a secondary issue when it comes to improving aviation safety.

The agency then conducted a comprehensive inspection of all runways at civil aviation airports and chose the airports in Magong and Tainan for installations of a new system.

The new systems would lower the visibility requirement of Runway 20 in Magong and Runway 18 in Tainan from 1,600m to 1,200m, the CAA said.

The agency estimated that the systems cost about NT$20 million (US$648,700) each, adding that it would have to spend an additional NT$5 million to buy a simplified approach lighting system for the Magong Airport runway.

A An-2 has gone missing over the Baltic sea, around 90 miles from the Lithuanian coast. There has been no sign of the plane or the crew of 2.

Actually, author of the pics doesn't confirm birdstrike. Probably just compressor stall.

Toronto-bound Transat flight from Rome diverted to Dublin

A Toronto-bound Transat flight from Rome was diverted to the Dublin Airport Friday after smoke was reported in the cabin.

Air Transat Airbus A330-200 carrying 313 passengers and 12 crew landed safely at 4:46 p.m. local time at the airport, Dublin Airport communications manager Siobhan Moore said in a brief interview.

A Transat Airbus 330 flying from Toronto to Lisbon in August, 2001, was forced to make an emergency landing in Portugal’s Azores islands after losing fuel and catching fire, injuring nine of the 293 passengers on board. A few days earlier, a Toronto-bound Transat flight carrying 324 passengers and 14 crew members had to be evacuated at the Orlando International Airport before takeoff when smoke was seen coming from the cabin’s ceiling lights.

A year after MH17, intelligence agencies slow to share threat data with pilots
18 July 2015
Excerpt

LONDON/BRUSSELS (Reuters) - A year after the downing of MH17, Europe's intelligence agencies remain reluctant to share information that might help airlines detect threats from ground-based conflicts in future, the region's aviation safety chief said on Friday.

Malaysia Airlines flight 17, flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, was shot down over eastern Ukraine on July 17 last year during fighting between Ukrainian troops and pro-Russian separatist rebels.

The United Nations has introduced a system for centralizing the safety notices for pilots already issued across the world, but the European Union's safety regulator wants to go further.

Patrick Ky, executive director of the European Aviation Safety Agency, has urged the EU's 28 nations to set up an alert system to process sensitive data and issue warnings to airlines.

It has begun talks with EU military representatives over how such a system would work in practice.

But speaking to Reuters on the anniversary of the downing of MH17, Ky said talks were moving slowly.

"We are discussing with member states how to set up this kind of alert mechanism for airlines," Ky said in an interview.

"Progress is slow, I have to acknowledge, because we are dealing with organizations which are not really programmed to share information: military intelligence agencies basically.

"It is sometimes a little difficult to convince them that if they have a piece of information, they need to share it with all the European Union members. But we are making progress."

What exactly do they want military intelligence to say? "There's war over there, so don't fly there, there might be SAMs operating"? Shouldn't things like this be mentioned in NOTAM?
