Just heard on the Dutch news that the plane has been found crashed in the mountains of Papua. Apparently there was some bad weather in the area.

Indonesia airline safety hurt by inadequate staff : sources
Excerpt
18 August 2015

MONTREAL/TORONTO (Reuters) - Indonesia scored poorly on a 2014 safety audit by the United Nations' aviation agency largely because its Ministry of Transportation is understaffed, said two sources familiar with the matter, as the country struggles to cope with the rapid expansion of air travel.

Indonesia's patchy aviation safety record worsened on Sunday when a passenger plane crashed in eastern Papua province with 54 people aboard, the third major plane crash this year in the Southeast Asian archipelago.

The U.N.'s Montreal-based International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) sets safety standards for international flights. Its audits evaluate countries' ability to oversee their airlines, including how well they conform to those standards.

Indonesia's government has struggled to hire and train staff quickly enough to oversee its fast-growing aviation market, which the International Air Transport Association expects to triple in size by 2034.

"Until they resolve this they cannot do the same level of supervision and certifications as a country with a robust system in place," one of the sources said.

Plenty of salvageable parts on it which I'm sure will be flying off the shelves.

If they can patch the plane so it can fly the short hop to Southern California Logistics Airport at Victorville, CA (the former George Air Force Base), then there is a chance the plane could undergo a full D-check overhaul and be returned to service.

747 plane engine snaps off during Iran flight, no injuries

Tehran (AFP) - An engine of a Boeing 747 operated by Iran's Mahan Air detached from the plane Thursday shortly after takeoff from Tehran, causing terror among passengers but no injuries, local media reported.

The 747, with 300 passengers on board, was on a flight from the capital's Mehrabad airport to Bandar Abbas in southern Iran when one of its engines crashed into a nearby field, forcing the jumbo to return and make an emergency landing.

Iranian media and social networks carried pictures of the crashed engine.

Iran desperately wants to upgrade its ageing fleet of 140 operating aircraft, hamstrung by nuclear-related and other sanctions which have also made spare parts difficult to source.

The restrictions were partly lifted by an interim agreement on Iran's nuclear programme that came into force in January 2014.

This allowed for the sale of spare parts, although direct sales of aircraft remained banned.

A final accord reached in Vienna on July 14, expected to be implemented at the start of 2016, will lift the sanctions in exchange for putting curbs on Iran's nuclear programme.

Iran plans to buy Airbus and Boeing passenger planes through long-term payment agreements once the accord comes into effect, Transport Minister Abbas Akhoundi said last month.

To purchase new planes, "our negotiations have been mostly with Airbus and Boeing, and we have provided them with our plans and needs until 2020," he said.

In August, a civil aviation official said his country planned to buy 80 to 90 Airbus and Boeing planes a year until it has a new 300-strong fleet.

It's a common problem for the A320, and when it happens there are usually more incidents in a short period of time.

Last week it also happened to a Tigerair flight from Chennai to Singapore.

http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/...o/2199734.html

Airbus will again send a reminder to all operators to make sure the cowling are properly fastened.

There also was a more serious crash last week.

A Tristar Air Airbus A300 Cargo plane crash landed in Mogadishu, Somalia on 12 October. It was delivering supplies for the UN mission in the country. After several failed landing attempts because of landing gear issues the plane had to crash land in the open field about 20km from the airport as they were running out of fuel. All crew survived the crash, but the plane is a write-off.

Considering that they landed in the open field the crew were extremely lucky to survive this. But it also makes you wonder why they didn't try to perform a belly landing on the runway in Mogadishu. At least there would have been some emergency services that could have assisted if the plane would have been a fire.
