Question - Proposed Corporation of London Tower - 1930s
Hey guys. I've heard about - on this site - a proposed tower that the Corporation of London intended to build back in the 1930s or 40s. It was in the Gothic style and would have been directly behind the Guildhall, but was abandoned following WW2 due to lack of money/ changing public mood etc.
Does anyone have any other information on this tower? Or even a picture of what it would have looked like? EDIT - sorry, tried to edit my title so that its more obvious as the question it is, but no dice. Last edited by mediadave; August 5th, 2009 at 04:12 PM. |

Proposed in 1944 apparantly - but purely a vision, sketched by two architects Kenneth Lindy and Winton Lewis.

Wow wish it was built! Reminds me of a NY skyscraper. Any ideas of height?

Reminds me more of the wedding cake towers of Moscow and Warsaw.

Supposedly 500 ft but I think that was just a random height plucked out of the air!

Even earlier at 1904 and a contender for the first tall building "proper" ever proposed for London is this Beresford Pite design for a new St Barts Hopital;

this all reminds me of quay street tower in manchester, 1948, proposed and rejected. 110 metres. would have been the tallest highrise in europe.

If that hospital had ever been built, I reckon every medical scandal and tragedy in the country would have happened there. Harold Shipman would have applied for a job there.
