NICE turn for Team Sandalwood
Quote:
Ashok Kheny picks up Sandalwood team in Celebrity Cricket League, wants it renamed Karnataka Bulldozers, plans to use NICE emblem

S Shyam Prasad

Posted On Thursday, January 27, 2011 at 12:01:00 AM

Nandi Infrastructure Corridor Enterprise (NICE) promoter Ashok Kheny has bought the Sandalwood team in the Celebrity Cricket League (CCL).

CCL is a private venture that will see film stars from Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada participate in a T20 cricket tournament.

Kheny confirmed that he has bought the team, but refused to reveal how much he paid for it. The teams were to be auctioned for a minimum of Rs 17 crore each.

However, sources said, the auction of the Kannada team had to be postponed repeatedly due to lack of participants. In the meantime, Kheny bought the team outright.

CCL managing director Vishnu Induri denied that there were no takers for the team. “There was an auction. The minimum bid was Rs 16.7 crore. Kheny bid the highest and won the rights to own the team for 10 years.”

KHENY'S NAME GAME

In a bid to get maximum mileage from the team, which is called Bengaluru Royals, Kheny wants it to be renamed as Karnataka Bulldozers. “Bulldozers are used in construction work. The name has the word 'Bull', which is the emblem of NICE. We will bulldoze our opponents,” he said.

Kheny is set to solve the problem of lack of a stadium in his inimitable style. He has plans to build a new multi-purpose stadium on Magadi Road. “Work will begin in about six months and completed within two years. There were once seven players from Karnataka in the Indian team. But, there is none in the World Cup squad. This hurts. We need playgrounds and stadiums for our youngsters,” he said.

RACE FOR OTHER TEAMS

The Tamil and Telugu teams, however, do not have a owner yet.

Induri said, “The Bollywood team is owned by actor Salman Khan. The owners of the Tamil and Telugu teams will be announced within two days.”

Manchu Vishnu, son of veteran actor Mohan Babu, is the top contender for the Telugu team while several business houses are in the race to bag the Tamil team. Mohan Babu is the bête noire of superstar-turned-neta Chiranjeevi who was seen as the front-runner to own the Telugu team.

MATCH SCHEDULE

The CCL event was scheduled for January 21 onwards, but the matches are now expected to start only in the second week of February. This rescheduling is causing a host of problems, as it is coinciding with the ICC cricket World Cup.
CCL is facing problems getting venues. Bangalore was to host the inaugural and many other CCL matches, but the Chinnaswamy stadium is hosting two World Cup matches. Meanwhile, the Sandalwood team has been practising for the last two weeks. But, the Tamil team is in a bit of a quandary on the choice of its icon player. Both the contenders — Vijay and Surya — are top stars in the Tamil film industry.

Raja and Yeddyurappa: Similar cases, but action poles apart
Dhananjay Mahapatra, TNN, Jan 27, 2011, 02.58am IST
Quote:
NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Karnataka governor H R Bhardwaj faced an identical question — whether to grant sanction for prosecution of a minister on a private complaint alleging corruption charges. The PM took the stand before the Supreme Court that a private person has to first file his complaint before a competent court.

If the court was prima facie satisfied about the veracity of the complaint and decided to issue notice to the accused, only then could the private complainant seek grant of sanction from the sanctioning authority, that is the PM. Bhardwaj's stand in granting sanction to prosecute Karnataka chief minister B S Yeddyurappa even before a complaint was filed in court contradicts the PM's stand before the Supreme Court.

Girls cash in on their eggs
Find This An Easy Way To Make Money
Prajwal Hegde | TNN

Quote:
Bangalore: Young girls in their early 20s —- college students and working professionals — are turning to egg donor programmes (aiding assisted pregnancies) — to make a quick buck which would help them buy a designer bag or pay for an exotic weekend get away.
In an alarming trend, an increasing number of youngsters in the city are repeatedly engaging themselves in these two-week programmes for lure of lucre. Each sitting reportedly makes the donor richer by Rs 30,000 to Rs 50,000.
Blame it on aspirational lifestyles.
Dr Kamini A Rao, a leading gynaecologist in the city, who heads the Assisted Conception Centre in Bangalore, said she runs into at least one ‘young adult’ every week who is looking to donate eggs for some additional pocket money.
Interestingly, most of these young donors are from working class backgrounds, often with both parents in salaried jobs. They may have comfortable lifestyles, but it is clearly not enough. One of the requirements of the programme is that the donor is above the age of 21, because of which parental consent isn’t needed. Unlike with renting of the womb, a trend that is growing in popularity in the lower middle class with the surrogate mother gaining up to Rs 2 lakh, there are few physical giveaways in donating eggs.

DONORS ARE EDUCATED
Dr Kamini explained, “These girls are well read and articulate, they know how the system works. They don’t come to me or my institution directly, they come through agencies. Some of them drop out once they realise that the procedure lasts two weeks and it might mean missing college or work or at the very least rearranging their time. Some of them want to be on these programmes more than once or twice. This is not a business. It raises serious moral and ethical questions. I counsel girls who come forward to donate, but that is all I can do. I cannot take decisions for them.”
Hema Gopalan, 22, training to be a beautician, is completing her Bachelors of Arts Degree through correspondence. She needed money urgently for, among other things, to give her wardrobe a new look. She first read about the egg donor programme on internet a couple of years ago and then more recently in a newspaper article. Hema had just one question to ask during the extensive counselling sessions she had to undergo before being confirmed on the programme. “Do I get paid per egg?”
Anything between eight and twelve eggs are retrieved from the donor in each sitting and payment is made for the whole exercise.
REPERCUSSIONS LIKELY
Dr Usha M R, a Bangalorebased gynaecologist, picked ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) as a fallout from some forms of fertility treatments. She explained that the repercussions of repeatedly engaging in donor activities could prove costly, given that any outside interference on the natural cycle came with side affects like abdominal bloating, nausea, weight gain and mood swings.
GROWING NUMBERS
Even though the young adult donor constitutes only 10% of the market, the numbers are growing and the ratios quick changing. In the last three years, doctors aver that the increase in the number of youngsters in these programmes has grown almost five times.
With infertility earmarked as one of the biggest problems that women face today, with 10% to 15% of the female population battling it, the dependence on donor programmes is growing by the day. However, almost 60% of the donors are older women, 30-plus, married, with families and from stable backgrounds: Requirements that doctors like Kamini Rao swear by.

Five disqualified MLAs had lost independent character, HC told
Bangalore, Jan 27 (PTI)
Quote:
By attending legislative party meetings and party functions, five disqualified MLAs had lost their independent character, counsel for two BJP MLAs argued before the Karnataka High Court today.

During the final hearing on petitions filed by five disqualified MLAs elected as independents, challenging the Speaker's order, counsel Satya Pal Jain submitted that they had received whips and acted according to them.

He argued that before they were disqualified, "nowhere have they said that they are independents" in the past two-and-half-years during which they had also never disputed that they have joined the BJP.
The case was adjourned for further hearing tomorrow.
P M Narendraswamy, Gulihatti D Shekhar, D Sudhakar, Shivaraj S Thangadagi and Venkataramanappa were disqualified by Speaker K G Bopaiah on October 10, a day before the vote of confidence was taken by the B S Yeddyurappa government which he won.

Days earlier, the five, along with 11 BJP rebel MLAs, had withdrawn support to the Chief Minister by submitting a letter to Governor H R Bhardwaj.

The Speaker had passed the composite order on separate writ petitions filed by two BJP MLAs C T Ravi and D N Jeevaraj, who is also the Chief Whip of the BJP legislature party, and one voter each from five Assembly constituencies represented by these five MLAs elected as independents, seeking their disqualification.

Another senior counsel, P S Narasimha, today argued before the bench, comprising Justice Mohan Shantanagoudar, Justice S Abdul Nazeer and Justice A S Bopanna, that "constitution rests the whole discretion on Speaker".

"Court must only see if the legislators (the disqualified MLAs) were prejudiced. In this case, ample opportunity was given to the respondents (the MLAs)", he submitted.

Counsel for the voters argued that the voters had the right to file petitions before the Speaker seeking disqualification of their MLAs.

Counsel for the five disqualified MLAs had earlier argued that they had never joined the BJP as they prayed for setting aside the Speaker's disqualification order.

Probe my family first, HDK tells Lokayukta
TNN, Jan 28, 2011, 12.01am IST
Quote:
BANGALORE: Former CM and JD(S) state chief H D Kumaraswamy wants complaints against him and his family be probed on priority. He has urged Lokayukta Justice N Santosh Hegde to look into the complaint filed by advocate S T Theggihalli.

"The allegations against us are baseless. Such charges have been made several times, including the Rs 150-crore bribery charge, but we have come clean all the time. BJP leaders' efforts won't yield any results," Kumaraswamy said on Thursday.

DHARNA PLANNED

Kumaraswamy has threatened to stage a dharna in front of the urban development department office on Friday, if information sought by him on the Bidadi township project and repayment of money to DLF Ltd were not furnished immediately. He said principal secretary Subhir Hari Singh hasn't given him information about repayment of Rs 400 crore to the company. "The money is not returnable. How did the government return the money without even discussing it at the cabinet?" he questioned.

2,000 30-STOREY SLUMS TO RISE IN CITY

If the urban development dept is serious about getting rid of hutments and encroachments in Bangalore,it could lead to behemoth apartment blocks housing 1,000 people each

Suchith Kidiyoor @timesgroup.com

Skyscrapers, conceptually at least, are meant for the rich. But there is all likelihood that the poor would be made to rise to vertigo-inducing heights in the garden city.
With slums proliferating in the Bangalore city limits, the think tank (read bureaucrats) in the state urban development department, egged on by the Centre, feels the best way to make the city jhopadpatti-free is to go vertical.
A source in the urban development department said that the buildings in which they plan to rehabilitate the urban poor could go up to 30 storeys, floor area ratio (FAR) permitting. There are 19 lakh slum dwellers in Bangalore.Assuming there are five people per family,it comes to 3.8 lakh households.Even if it is assumed that there would be six flats on each floor,a 30-storey building would accommodate only 180 families,or 900 people. So,to accommodate all 19 lakh slum-dwellers,at least 2,000 such buildings would have to be built. And the number of such concrete King Kongs could only go up as not everywhere in the city the FAR would allow 30 storeys, which is the maximum. The rationale for going vertical is that 70% of the 682 slum pockets in Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) limits are on private land. The government would require thousands of crores of rupees to acquire these private lands to ensure permanent housing to the poor.

Denotifications were legal: SMK
TNN, Jan 31, 2011, 12.16am IST
Quote:
BANGALORE: Taking a dig at chief minister B S Yeddyurappa, external affairs minister S M Krishna on Sunday said he had neither bypassed rules nor favoured his relatives while denotifying government land.

He told reporters here on Sunday that he had already written to the chief minister, explaining the extent of land denotified and the purpose of his doing so. "I have not breached rules. If denotifications were done violating rules to benefit one's children and relatives, then it needs to be discussed threadbare. All the denotifications during my tenure were legal. All the documents are with the government. Let him (CM) verify,'' Krishna said.

He said he had already written to the CM, explaining the extent of lands denotified and the purpose of doing so.

Referring to Yeddyurappa's threat that he was preparing a booklet on denotification of land done by previous CMs, he said: "Mere documentation won't help. Some MPs may not even read it.''

HP’s Apotheker is here, IBM’s Palmisano coming

Quote:

Bangalore: It's a sign that India's, and specifically Bangalore's, weight in the world of IT is still growing rapidly. The CEOs of the world's two biggest IT companies are visiting the city in the space of one week.
L e o Apotheker, president & CEO of the wo rl d ' s biggest IT company, the $126-billion H ew l e t t - Packard (HP), was in Bangalore on Monday to meet with the company's employees and will be heading to Delhi on Tuesday for meetings with the government.
Sam Palmisano, the chairman, president & CEO of the $100-billion IBM,will be in the city on February 9 to launch the company's centenary celebrations.
The visits by the two CEOs also suggest that US policies and statements designed to keep jobs at home are not having much of an impact, and that India does not have reason to worry on that count. Apotheker, who took over last September following the ouster of the previous CEO Mark Hurd, is meeting with customers, partners and employees in India to learn more about the company. An HP CEO is visiting India after almost 10 years; the last visit was by Carly Fiorina in April 2001. This long gap has led some to believe that HP wasn't as serious about India as its counterparts like IBM and Accenture, and proof of that was seen in its employee numbers in India, which is proportionately much less than that for the others.
Apotheker's visit could be a signal that this is changing. In an address to HP India employees at the company's Mahadevapura, Bangalore, facility (heard by employees in other facilities through an internal broadcast), Apotheker said India was poised to be a driving force in the global information economy. He spoke about building the HP brand in India, about the need for innovation and about getting into higher margin areas.
The number of senior officials that accompanied him to Bangalore also underlines the importance of the visit. Sources in the company said that the officials included Pete Karolczak, head of the infrastructure technology outsourcing (ITO) business, Robb Rasmussen, head of best shore services, and Ludger Rohlmann, delivery head for ITO.

BBMP naming a main road and park after Dr Vishnuvardhan

Quote:
After more than a year after the death of Dr. Vishnuvardhan, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has woken up and come forward to pay tribute to the veteran Kannada actor in a unique way. In its council meeting on Monday, the BBMP has decided to name a main road and a park in Jayanagar in Bangalore after Dr Vishnuvardhan.

In the meeting, the BBMP had taken a joint decision to call the the road between Sarjapur and Kengeri as Dr Vishnuvardhan road. Meanwhile, it has also planned to name the public park in 4th T block, Jayanagar as ‘Dr Vishnuvardhan Vishranthi Vana’. Now, it has issued a notice to the public of these localities to get their no objections to its decision within 30 days.

The BBMP's decision is coming out after the Bellary Corporation planned to install a statue of late Dr. Vishnuvardhan at a park in the city and name the park as ‘Dr Vishnuvardhana Park’. It should be recalled here that earlier, the corporation had also installed a statue of Dr Rajkumar at a garden in Bellary and named it after the legendary Sandalwood actor.

However, it is very painful here remember that after the death of Dr. Rajkumar, the BBMP had announced to erect a 13 feet Brass statue of 'Annavru' in front of Town Hall, but due to one or the other reason it is postponing the installation of the statue. Although the statue is ready, why is it delaying the installation process? Even bigger question is whether it will bring its promise into action in near future.

BBMP wins award for SAS
TNN, Feb 2, 2011, 12.09am IST

Quote:
BANGALORE: Hard to digest. But the property tax scheme is the only saving face for BBMP at the urban local awards here on Tuesday. The award carries Rs 2 lakh and a memento.

BBMP won the II prize for best practices under the city corporation category. This was for its implementation of the Self-Assessment Scheme (SAS) in property tax. The corporation was lauded for being the first and only successful urban local body to have revised the property tax assessment under an area-based system called unit area value (UAV) in 2008-09, after SAS implementation in 2000-01. BBMP undertook SAS for `easy and safe tax payment'. The UAV method proved that it could revise property tax in a pragmatic manner to satisfy both the taxpayer and the revenue requirement of the corporation.

UAV is calculated on the basis of expected returns and calculated on per square foot per month, that is the unit. And value changes depending on location.

Bangalore development comes under the direct purview of chief minister B S Yeddyurappa himself. Yet, BBMP had to make do with just one award.
