KSRTC offers 30 pc discount

The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has announced ‘Prayanothsava’, a scheme which offers 30 per cent discount for its customers on their fourth trip in KSRTC bus.

Noting that the 30 per cent discount will be given at the time of booking fourth ticket, KSRTC said: “...only if the tickets booked earlier are not cancelled.” However, the commuter may continue being eligible for the offer, provided all the four tickets he/she books are valid for travel.

It will be valid only for a single seat booked in the fourth ticket and that the booking dates and journey dates must fall on or before April 30, 2012. The offer will be valid only if all tickets are booked from the same e-ticket user ID and if all tickets carry the same passenger name. All tickets must be purchased through e-booking or m-booking.

Govt to draw Hassan airport blueprint afresh

Quote:
About four-and-a-half years after approving the project, the State government has found the proposed greenfield airport in Hassan financially not viable. As a result, it has decided to revise the project plan.

In the recent letter to the Infrastructure Development Department (IDD), the Finance Department has stated the Detailed Project Report (DPR) is “unreliable” and “inconsistent” and recommended that the project be planned afresh.

One of the reasons cited by the FD, official sources said, is the low rate of returns.

The acceptable Internal Rate of Returns (IRR) for such a project is 12 to 14 per cent. The DPR has, however, quoted 10.75 per cent IRR. “So the project is not viable. It is strongly recommended that the project may be planned afresh as per the Government of India guidelines so that it is eligible under Viability Gap Funding (VGF),” the FD has stated in reply to a proposal seeking VGF cover to the project.

The Public Private Partnership (PPP) project has been awarded to Jupiter Aviation and Logistics Ltd. The promoter would invest about Rs 1,200 crore on the project, while the government would provide 960 acres of land and utility services like power and water.

The project was planned in three components: Passenger, cargo and aviation related activities. Besides airport, it was planned to set up an aviation training academy and aircraft maintenance and overhauling facility as a back up to the Bangalore international airport.

The Hassan project was approved by the then JD(S)-BJP government headed by H D Kumaraswamy in 2007. The then government had appointed the PWD (the portfolio then held by Kumaraswamy’s brother H D Revanna) as the nodal agency to ensure speedy implementation. (IDD was the nodal agency for all other airport projects).

However, the project failed to take off. Of the total 960 acres, the government had handed over 536 acres to the company. But the company had been insisting that the entire land should be provided for it to start the work, sources said.

Cut down project size

In a recently held meeting headed by Chief Secretary S V Ranganath, it was decided to develop the airport on 761 acres of land instead of 960 acres as planned. The company has also been asked to submit a revised project plan as per the FD’s recommendation.

When contacted, IDD Secretary Raj Kumar Khatri only said that it has been decided to implement the project on 761 acres instead of 960 acres.

The project size will not be reduced. The company will implement the project in different components. The remaining 225 acres has been acquired and the work will commence soon, he added.

Planets align, but don’t expect doomsday

Quote:
Come February 25, the western skies just after dusk will make you feel either of two things: “Wow, what a sight!” or “Oh my God! We are nearing the end of the world!”

On that night, and two nights after that, you will see Venus and Jupiter near each other even as the Moon will almost dance its way around and between them. Mars, too, will be at its closest approach to Earth on March 5. This will allow telescope-equipped sky-gazers to look at the Martian north-pole.

“You can already see Venus and Jupiter near each other in the night sky, but now people will be able to see them in the same field of view, hence making it a good opportunity for photography,” says BS Shylaja, director, Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium.

However, she is quick to point out that this phenomenon is not a rare occurrence. “You can see this in the night sky at least once a year.”

“On February 25, the Moon will be right below Venus; on February 26, it will actually be right in between Venus and Jupiter; and on February 27, it will go beyond Jupiter,” she explains.

This phenomenon is something that members of Association of Bangalore Amateur Astronomers (ABAA), are looking forward to.

“We will be meeting on Sunday at the planetarium to gaze at the night sky. It is bound to be a beautiful sight,” says Jayanth Basavarajaiah, ABAA president. “The Moon will move slightly away as the days go by, but Venus and Jupiter will stay close for at least another month.”

However, scientists feel that other than the spectacular view of the celestial objects, that would be any photographer’s delight, there is nothing to worry about, despite fears of planetary alignments—or the much feared end of the Mayan calendar—spelling doom for life on Earth.

According to Prof Siraj Hasan, director, Indian Institute of Astrophysics, this phenomenon is called conjunction. “Planets of our solar system are nearly aligned in the same plane in the sky, though they are at completely different distances from Earth.

However, sometimes they will appear in the same region of the night sky as they orbit the sun, giving the impression that the planets are aligned,” he says.

“This is a routine celestial event and has no physical implication, nor will it have any discernible effects on Earth,” he adds.

Kannada version was introduced six months ago and the response to the show was good. According to him, though seating arrangement is made only for 250, more than 500 people buy the tickets and sit on the lawn and watch it.

Average salary of Indian CEOs up 30% to Rs 2 crore

BANGALORE: The average salary of top CEOs in India has risen to Rs 2 crore, up by close to 30% in the last one year, says an executives compensation report by global consulting firm Hay Group that has just been released.

The study covered 87 top Indian and MNC CEOs (no family CEOs were eligible) operating across industry domains. It found that some 50% of them are now in the Rs 2 crore per annum category and 12% in the Rs 7 crore category. "There is a substantial jump in what professional CEOs carry home today compared to a year ago. Most of the CEOs in the Rs 2 crore category were in the Rs 1.4 crore or Rs 1.5 crore pay scale a year ago. Conglomerate CEOs who used to get Rs 5.25 crore on average a year ago now get about Rs 7 crore," said Sridhar Ganesan, rewards practice leader at Hay Group.

A growing trend of cross-sector employability of CEOs, coupled with scarcity of holistic CEOs (those with experience across functions), has created a scramble for CEO talent in the job market. "Enterprises are hiring function/sector agnostic CEOs, those who are general operational specialists. They are willing to pay a premium for leaders with broad-based experience and exposure," said Ganesan.

The Indian CEO market has always seen a large pool of "operationally excellent" CEOs, but a constant scarcity of "managing-business" CEOs has driven compensation high. Compensation is expected to further spiral upwards owing to the increasing cross-sector employability of CEOs-the new breed of "Lateral CEOs", said the study.

Cross-sector movements are becoming the order of the day. The Hay Group study notes that a global cement major recently recruited an Indian investment banker as CEO of its India operations and that the CEO of an Indian manufacturing company has joined an IT company to lead its manufacturing vertical.

The average CEO's salary is 2.6 times that of the rest of the executive population, in terms of total cost to company (CTC), excluding long-term incentives. However, there is very little total compensation differential between top executives across core and enabler functional roles.

The study looked at sectors like mining, oil and gas, chemicals, automotives, construction, consumer durables, FMCG, retail, telecom, transportation, and power/utilities. Technology companies were not part of the study.

City police nab inter-state robbers

BANGALORE: Subramanyapura police arrested six miscreants who robbed lakhs of rupees by diverting the attention of customers who had gone to bank to deposit money. Their modus operandi was to divert the attention of the people by throwing Rs 10 notes.
Unaware of the consequences, many had fallen prey to their act and had lost lakhs of rupees. In an incident, Rajagopalan, a city-based businessman, had gone to Syndicate Bank at Doddakallasandra along with his driver.
When Rajagopalan’s driver stepped out of the car to buy a tender coconut, the miscreants dropped Rs 10 notes near the car and informed Rajagopalan that the notes had fallen from his driver’s pocket.
When Rajagopalan stepped out of the car to pick up the notes, the miscreants took away the Rs 2.5 lakh cash that was kept in the car and fled. Following the rise of many such incidents in the city, police formed a special team led by Sonia Narang, DCP, South.
The team collected information from other states like Tamil Nadu, Andra Pradesh and arrested Rajesh alias Raja, 27, Subramani alias Ganesh, 20, Venkatesh alias Kashi, 20, Uttaman alias Hanumantha Rao, 40, Naresh alias Kaliya Murthy, 24 and Sharavana alias Govind, 24.
The police recovered Rs 3 lakh in cash and valuables worth Rs 1 lakh from the miscreants.
All the accused are natives of Andhra Pradesh and are found to be relatives.
They executed the plan by hiring a house at Hosur, Tamil Nadu and robbed customers at various banks in Bangalore, Kolkata, Tirupati, Hyderabad, Hosur, Krishnagiri, Chennai and Madurai.
Twelve such pending cases on ‘attention diversion’ across the city were solved with their arrest.

IT sector urged to participate in development activities

Ravi Chandran, Ashwin Mahesh, V Naresh Narasimhan and Rd Ashwin Verma at the "GIREM estination Bangalore" conference to bring together committed minds to discuss and share views on future of Bangalore City , in Bangalore on Thursday

‘Reorient your CSR to create social infrastructure for the city'

Quote:
Information technology companies and professionals were on Thursday urged to reorient their corporate social responsibility (CSR) towards creating social infrastructure for Bangalore.

‘LARGE PRESENCE'

Participating in the ‘Destination Bangalore' summit organised by the Global Initiative for Restructuring Environment and Management (GIREM), V. Naresh Narasimhan, managing partner of Venkataramanan Associates, said IT professionals now account for nearly one million of city's population. Another three million people are directly or indirectly depending on them.

Having such a large and influential presence, the community should directly participate in development activities instead of adopting a school or rejuvenating a lake, he said.

Mr. Narasimhan said, “There has been a general perception among the people that IT professionals are there just to get something from the city and not to give back. They should do away this perception,” he said.

To this, promoters and stakeholders of GIREM said they were prompt in paying taxes and cess and it is the Government's duty to create social infrastructure. To this, Mr. Narasimhan said they should be direct parties to development. He was one of the panellists at the session on ‘Metro, the backbone of Bangalore'.

Speaking about the effectiveness of metro and other modes of public transport, ABIDe member and urban expert Ashwin Mahesh said the Government should get the finances right to make sure that value addition is captured properly.

The metro should be used as a vehicle to get social gaps filled than just for daily commuting. For effective functioning of urban infrastructure, including public transport, the metropolitan region governance authority as well as a land transport authority should be in place, he said.

Mr. Mahesh said, “Only one-tenth of the city is impacted by the metro if we go by the statistics. The problem is that social infrastructure has not been created to accommodate over 1,000 people who migrate to the city every day, outside the metro zone.”

‘AGENT OF CHANGE'

Ravi Chandran, member of Bangalore City Connect Foundation, said: “We need to start thinking what the metro means, be proactive in our thinking and understand that it is not merely an engineering project, but an agent of social, cultural, and economic change for our city. It is about creating jobs and so on.” In the session on fire and safety, D. Rashid, Deputy Director, Karnataka Fire and Emergency Services, regretted that fire preparedness audit by companies was not being done once in a quarter as mandated. However, the department was mapping out the extended city to deal with fire safety issues.

Australian university signs MoUs with firms

Australia’s La Trobe University signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with three leading Indian companies and institution this week.

The MoUs were signed with technology firm HCL and electric vehicle manufacturer Mahindra Reva, both in Bangalore, and Rajasthan’s Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani.

On his first official visit to India, vice-chancellor and president of La Trobe University, John Dewar, said the MoUs would help force strategic alliances with India. “We are committed to our relationship with India and look forward to building increasingly strong research and educational collaborations with Indian companies and institutions,” he said.

‘Demand for technical writers growing in India’

Showing concerns towards communication skills among engineers in the country, Lok Sabha MP Janaradhan Swamy stressed the need of including good communication tools in the education system.

Swamy was speaking at the inaugural function of the Technical Communication World India (TC World), a conference organised by Technical Writers of India (TWIN) on Thursday.

He also spoke about the importance of cultivating communication skills to suit industry standards.

“The communication skills of many engineers in the country are bad. Many of them don’t learn the language through the educational system until they start working. This is why the government should include good communication tools in the educational system,” he said.

While Swamy spoke about the need for communication skills, the organisers stressed that the demand for technical writers in India is growing.

“We came to India about three years ago and realised that there is a demand for technical writers. Last year at this programme, we had 300 participants and this year the number has increased by 10%. You just have to go online to see the demand for such writers,” said Dr Michael Fritz, executive director, TC World.

Ram Shanmugal, manager, Tata Interactive Systems, said that there will soon be a large need for technical writers in the country.

“In another two years, it is going to become a sought after job.

There are certain norms in Europe and US about the standard of writing in various industries especially in automobile industry and those standards are being adopted in India, so there will be plenty of new opportunities,” he said.

Bangalore to become R&D hub

Bangalore may soon become the hub of research and innovation in India. Speaking at the Victoria, Australia-India symposium on research and technology on Thursday, MN Vidyashankar, principal secretary for IT, BT and S&T announced that plans are under way to create a research umbrella organisation that will bring together all the research and development labs in the city.

“We will be replicating the model of Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), Taiwan, in the city. ITRI is where the iPad and the iPhone were made. It is home to all big innovation and it was started only in 1973,” he said adding that work on it will likely begin in four to five months. The umbrella organisation will be set up with consultation from administration from ITRI.

“This is a way to promote synergy between research and industry. This will be an institutional framework. There are 395 research labs in the city, so this organisation will work with all of them. In case someone wants to make a new kind of phone, then they will approach this organisation and they will give the project to one of the research organisations, who will then make a prototype. Based on that the product will be developed,” he said.

The budget will be fixed only after consultation with ITRI.

“The report will be drafted and submitted to the government on February 28 and once it gets approval, we will call people from ITRI to the city,” he said.

Oz-India bond strengthened

The minister for innovation, services and small business, Victoria, Louise Asher announced three new partnerships between Deakin University and Indian organisations. She also said that life sciences sector offers opportunities for new education and research partnerships between India and Victoria.

Three MoUs were signed between Deakin University and Bharat Forge, Indian Oil Corporation and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc).

Travel jockey presents a taste of Karnataka's local flavour

Quote:
When most people reflect upon their travels, they put their thoughts into perspective by referring to the “shades and colours” of the locale. So why should I be any different? I tried with each different location to reflect in the same way, but for some reason, Karnataka was different. Everyone says that India is a perfect mixture of the old and new; well, I’m saying that Karnataka in particular is the manifestation of that thought.

I have been very clear about my many disorders associated with travel. I eat too much, I drink too much, I’m way too curious at times for my own good, I am constantly asking questions that seem very simple, I wander, and I have very very few inhibitions. Karnataka however, inspired a brand new disorder in me. Since it is brand new I have no idea what to call it. All I can say is that the state as a whole gave me a combination of obsessive compulsive disorder and attention deficit disorder. Basically the thought in my head was “I don’t know what I want, but I want IT now!”

In Bangalore for example, just riding around in the taxi going from location to location was a challenge. It was a challenge in the sense I kept wanting to stop the car and get out. I would spot something like a very old-fashioned south Indian food joint sitting right next to a very modern mall. The divide between the two structures was almost invisible. You would see a hot posh girl sitting at the food joint and a traditional Brahmin man at the mall, it almost seemed like the poster of a romantic comedy!

In Bangalore, I met Ramesh Arvind. I wish I could tell you guys that meeting a huge star like him was nerve wracking but…it totally wasn’t. We shot with him for the show (won’t tell you what, you gotta watch the episode!) but beforehand me and him had a casual chit chat. Now normally in this kind of situation (interview) someone of his stature should be the focus of the conversation. But this guy, this awesome guy, kept trying to make me the focus. Not out of humility, but out of genuine interest. He was asking me where I had been and how the experience has been so far, and even after that, he shifted the focus to Bangalore and began to muse on his love of his home state. I quickly realised why the south loves and cherishes its stars, because they are regular people.

My next destination in Karnataka was Udupi. There something extremely cool struck me. You remember that thing I said about the old and the new? Well it happened with the transition from Bangalore to Udupi, but only physically. The environment changed, we went from urban jungle to rural plains…but the people were still the same. One of my jobs as a comedian is to watch people very closely. Out of all the places I have been to in our country, only in Karnataka did I notice this phenomenon, that the behaviour of the people changed only a minutia from city to farm. Outside of the obvious educational and societal variances, there were no changes. Sure the IT guy in Bangalore and the buffalo herder in Udupi are different, but only in the tangible sense. Their behaviour, the core of their person was still the same — kind, warm, friendly, and willing to let a weirdo like me into their world.

So friends, you can read the brochures and listen to the stereotypes about Karnataka, but keep the things I have said in mind, because we all know how special Karnataka is, but only if you go there and visualise it the way I have will you see how freaky it is!

Very nice initiative by the palace board, the illuminated palace looks wonderful, especially during the sound and light programme, when 'Kayou Sri Gowri', the anthem of the Kingdom of Mysore is sung.

Ananthamurthy, the state government is preparing to issue the final notification to effect the renaming of 12 cities including the State capital.

On Friday, a meeting chaired by chief secretary decided to expedite the long-pending process by immediately seeking a clarification from Survey of India, which is one of the authorities to verify new names to be incorporated into survey records and maps. “The state government has already got a clearance from the Survey of India. And the High Court has dismissed two writ petitions objecting to renaming of Belgaum and Bangalore. However, the state government wants to ascertain if there are any more objections,” said K.N. Bengeri, member of the Karnataka-Maharashtra Border Dispute Special Legal Advisory Committee.

It may recalled that in 2005, the then chief minister Dharam Singh had hoped to rename the State capital on November 1, 2006, to coincide with the launch of Karnataka's Golden Jubilee year - Suvarna Karnataka. However, the proposal was further delayed as the Centre withheld permission owing to M.V. Chavan and others from Belgaum contending that the change of name – from Belgaum to Belagavi, would hurt the sentiments of Marathi-speaking people. Finally, the Centre gave permission to rename all 12 cities in 2008. But again, another petitioner K.N. Srinivas filed a writ before the High Court objecting to the way the new names were spelt.

Mysore - should have left untouched. Mysore has been documented in Various Historical records. Hope Mysore Public should protest to maintain the same name. Otherwise Mysoru will give raise to a new place and confusion in Historians with the existence of erstwhile Mysore Kingdom.

Moreover at very first Glance itself the word Mysore feels more attached to locals than Mysoru which is somewhat awkward .

Hoping the locals of Mysore also feel the same.....
