Dialogue initiated for bullet train on Chennai-Mysore sector
Seeking closer interaction with industry leaders from Tamil Nadu, the Karnataka State Government officials have initiated dialogue for a bullet train plying on Chennai-Mysore sector, wants Chennai-Bangalore industrial corridor extended to Mumbai and an Aerospace Park for mutual benefit, said its Industries Minister Murugesh R. Nirani on Tuesday.
“We are not competing with Tamil Nadu. But on the other hand, we would like to work with them. We could not have dreamt of such a thing 10 years ago. The unveiling of poet-saint statues by the Chief Ministers of these States has improved our relations,” Mr. Nirani told The Hindu. In the last five years, Karnataka has attracted nine firms from Tamil Nadu with an investment of Rs.11,856 crore. Three manufacturers from Tamil Nadu have evinced interest to set up units with investment of Rs.4,000 crore. The names will be announced during the Global Investors Meet, he said. High-speed rail link According to him, the commissioning of the first phase metro rail in Bangalore city by the year end would ease the traffic problems. Besides, the State is also planning to have a high-speed rail link connecting Bangalore International Airport and Bangalore city. Noting that Japanese firms are demanding a separate industrial park, industrial corridor and bullet train, Mr. Nirani said “recently we set up a dialogue committee to speed up the work relating to bullet train. It is in the initial stages. It involves heavy funding. The next round of meeting will be held in June.” Addressing investors as part of ‘Global Investors Meet 2010' road show, Karnataka Commissioner for Industrial Development and Director of Industries and Commerce Raj Kumar Khatri said that high priority is given for creating requisite infrastructure. “We have a power shortage of 15 per cent. The situation would improve in the next six months, as units with 100 MW of power will be added every month. Non-availability of land is a major constraint. The State Government had notified 56,000 acres of degraded land for industrial purposes. Two gas pipelines are proposed – Dabhol-Bangalore; Chennai-Bangalore-Mangalore. It will lead to setting up gas based power plants and fertilizer plants. The aero-park will not compete with the one proposed by Tamil Nadu,” he said. The two-day Global Investors Meet will be held in Bangalore on June 3 and 4 in which 2,000 delegates are expected to take part, Mr. Khatri said. http://www.hindu.com/2010/05/19/stor...1955410500.htm |

24-hour power for Peenya estate?
Bangalore: In a major relief to the small-scale industries in Peenya Industrial Area, Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) on Wednesday promised to supply uninterrupted power to the industries for 10-15 days. Bescom has vowed to set right the transmission and distribution system in the area. What this means is that if the system is set right and then load shedding happens, the number of hours of power cut would be lower for the companies. Surprisingly, there were no major power cuts in Chikpet also today. In a move towards resolving the long impending problem of intermittent power cuts in the Peenya Industrial area, large and medium scale industries minister, Murugesh R Nirani, along with members of Peenya Industrial Association (PIA) met principal secretary, energy department, K Jairaj, Bescom and managing directors of Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL) on Wednesday. “The transmission and distribution system in the industrial area is in a bad state. The 20MVA transformer in Brindavan Station and 66 underground cables, which were set up three years back, are yet to be connected. Besides, many 11KV lines have collapsed. These issues have to be addressed. Till then, there should be no load shedding in the area,” informed PIA president S M Hussain. He added that once the system is rectified, Bescom can go in for load shedding and can introduce staggered holiday in the industrial area. www.timesofindia.com |

![]() The Karnataka Government has proposed to plant five lakh saplings in and around Bangalore this year to mitigate the effects of rapid urbanisation, which has led to increase in pollution levels, Urban Development Minister Suresh Kumar said on Thursday. “With nearly 1,500 vehicles being added on Bangalore roads each day, pollution levels have increased alarmingly, making undertaking of green initiatives like planting of saplings imperative”, he said, unveiling the “Lalit Suri Green Initiative Conclave” here. Lauding the Lalit Suri Hospitality Group’s programme of planting 1.5 lakh saplings in and around Bangalore, he said the Government would support any such private-public partnerships. “We are also looking at 50 tree gardens and initiatives to preserve the bird progeny in the city, besides creating four mini Lalbaghs here”, Mr. Kumar said. He said the Government would go all out to incorporate the valuable suggestions made in similar conclaves and also consult environment experts and NGOs in the field to make Bangalore “the garden city that it was”. “We would also like to encourage tree planting by urban industries and such initiatives in schools and colleges”, he said. Noted envrionmentalist and “Eco Watch” founder Suresh Heblikar expressed concern over environmental degradation in the city due to unprecedented construction boom. He also urged the Government to take steps to ensure that hills were not destroyed for granite quarrying. “We need 16-18 lakh trees in the city for oxygen and trees alone can sequester carbon”, Mr. Heblikar said. |

Roof garden, loo on underbridge
![]() Bangalore: A park on an underbridge? This surely typifies Bangalore city, which is still trying to look bright and fresh, despite its swiftly balding green cover. Residents of Nayandanahalli and surrounding areas will shortly have a unique park atop the newly constructed underbridge. By the end of May, the park will tinkle with fountains just next to the elevated service road on Nayandanahalli, and will be a first of its kind. There will also be a Sulabh Shouchalaya nearby. With the construction of this railway underbridge by Bangalore Development Authority, the 800-metre stretch of Outer Ring Road completes full circle, circumscribing the city. The Outer Ring Road at this stretch also contains an important railway crossing of the Bangalore-Mysore line. BDA has also taken a decision to connect this ORR under the railway line and avoid a level crossing at Nayandanahalli, situated in the heart of Bangalore city. The underbridge, which will be open for public use by the end of May, does more than connect the two parts of the city. M H M Sreeprakash, executive engineer of BDA, told The Times of India that the roof garden will reduce temperatures by 2-4 degrees in the surrounding areas. Besides, BDA has plans to let creepers grow on the wall of the service roads next to the underpass. “We have plans of not painting the walls, but developing the stretch as a green wall, with the help of creepers,” said Sreeprakash. As per the survey conducted by the Public Welfare Department in February 2010, 1.25 lakh vehicles commute from Magadihalli to this junction every day. Construction of the railway underbridge has been entrusted to Nagarjuna Construction Company Limited on tender basis. On the roof garden, there are provisions made to instal solar panels so that the underpass will be illuminated by solar lights and need not depend upon Bescom power. RAINWATER HARVESTING According to BDA officials, for the first time in the city, a rainwater harvesting system has been designed near the underpass for a capacity of 6,00,000 litres of water, as a means of supply to plants, and to charge borewells. The same water will also be utilized in the Sulabh Shouchalaya installed atop the underbridge. NO WATER CLOGGING HERE Water usually clogs underpasses, especially during the monsoon, and there have been instances of buses stuck in the water. To avoid this, grating drains have been introduced to allow rainwater to seep into the groundwater chamber. MORE ON THE BRIDGE This underbridge links Sumanahalli Junction to Mysore Road This bridge cuts travel by about 5.5 km Underbridge is technically called ‘cut and cover’ Is 170 metres long, and built at a cost of Rs 79 crore Work began in June 2008. www.timesofindia.com |

‘Why spend Rs 1k cr for GIM? Use it for power’
Advocate Files Plea Seeking Injunction On Meet
Bangalore:The high court has asked the government to file objections to the interlocutory application (IA) filed by a Bangalore advocate seeking temporary injunction on the Global Investors Meet (GIM) scheduled on June 3 and 4. G R Mohan, who filed the IA, told the court: “Though the high court passed an order on March 23 asking the government to supply two hours of additional power to farmers every day, it wasn’t implemented. In fact, the government said it is not in a position to supply quality power to farmers during the day. Unscheduled loadshedding has increased since then. Because of that, farmers and industries in the state are forced to depend on generators to overcome power cuts. When the authorities are not in a position to obey court orders and provide adequate power, they are organizing a GIM on June 3 and 4 to lure investors. How will they provide additional power? They are spending nearly Rs 1,000 crore on that meet. The same could have been used to improve the power situation.’’ The next hearing of the case is on May 25. www.timesofindia.com |

Star hotels and clubs will be the first to stay open
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/C...ow/5956185.cms BANGALORE: Excise minister M P Renukacharya, determined to return Bangalore its nightlife, has written to the excise commissioner to prepare a detailed report on the pros and cons of extending business hours for clubs and star hotels. For starters, he deadline for serving liquor will be stretched from 11.30 pm to 2 am in star hotels (CL-6) and registered clubs (CL-4). What categories of units will have an extension? Presently, we are thinking only about clubs and star hotels. Closure hours will remain the same for CL-2 (wine shops) and CL-9 (bars and restaurants). |

Those who drink, drive and make havoc will be there even if the deadline is 11.30 or 2 am or 3 am. In fact it is safe for the general public if it is 2 am or 3 am compared with 11.30 pm when most of the city will be yet to go to sleep. Nandan, Police start checking by 10.30 pm also.Nandan, Police start checking by 10.30 pm also. So till now I used to make it a point to reach home before 10-10.15 pm after any party. Once I and my wife narrowly escaped checking at about 10.45 pm at Old Airport Road. What I have found is it is better to booze during day time and drive, nobody will stop you.

The case is that it is not always feasible to have a designated driver. We are still middle level professionals, so perhaps will take some 4-5 years more to have the luxury of a designated driver . You might have meant having a driver for that day, but that is also not practical always.Regarding waiting till booze wearing off, my nature is that it doesn’t get in to my head easily or it is difficult to judge whether I am drunk, unless with a breath analyser.( Perhaps due to the practice of drinking regularly at home (or without letting others know) from 1998.) At any point of time, we can have taxis to drop you. But the issue is you have to leave the car at office, the next day take a cab or depend on public transport etc. BTW by nature, I seldom get boozed off. But even that would be enough for being booked if tested by a breath analyzer. These instances of partying or drinking outside is comparatively rare these days. I booze mainly at home, but I do drive a little after that, say to the nearby shop or restaurant. Now there is one solution which I have found out, getting a lady driver. I have a friend of mine who stays nearby and she also would be there for our parties. So she picks me up for the day and drops me back. She won’t drink always, but even if she have a few drinks, rarely we have been stopped.
