Btw under construction 4-lane highway connecting cities Ganca and Yevlakh will also have the same traffic lights like on Baku-Sumgayit and Baku-Bilgah highways. I have seen the construction works with installation of those traffic lights

Could anybody clarify the road numbering system in Azerbaijan please? German Wikipedia refers to 8 main roads numbered M1 - M8, while Wegenwiki refers to M1 - M4 plus some A3xx routes.

The A3xx routes are Soviet numbers. It's uncertain if Azerbaijan changed its numbering system for secondary roads (they did so with M1 - M4). Apparently Azerbaijan is the only country in the Caucasus which didn't change the Soviet numbers immediately. Armenia and Georgia changed them pretty quickly, but central Asian -stan republics did not. (Kazakhstan recently introduced a new A-numbering system).

It's also said some two digit Axx numbers are used, but I've never seen them on photographs nor on maps. Google Maps uses the Soviet Axxx numbers plus M1 - M4.

During Soviet times, only M27 and M29 ran through the Azerbaijan SSR.

The Azerbaijan Ministry of Transport gives this highway list:

http://azeryol.az/az/content/325/

with M1 through M8 and R1 through R66. The letters mean (in GoogleButcheredEnglish):

Quote:
# Letter-to-M and an important inter-state transport links to the countries bordering the Republic of Azerbaijan Baku, the capital city of the Republic of Azerbaijan with the common use of the motor roads connecting the (main motorways) indeksləşdirilir:

# With the letter-of-R is a one of the cities and regions, and connecting directly to the motor roads in general use are not included in the category of M indeksləşdirilir.
But elsewhere I've seen in text (and not in pics of signs) that the regional roads use A instead of R with numbers in the same range (two digit maximum). Perhaps A was reserved for Asian highways instead. Are these regional roads marked with either letter on new signs?

Question about the M6 and M8 roads in southern Azerbaijan...

Since the Armenian border crossings are closed, how far west on M6 and east on M8 can one drive before encountering a road closure? Are the closures near (< 1 km from) the borders, or are they further inland?

If I am not wrong the highways are open until the last millitary basements, usually 1-3 km until the border and frontal line.
