Another win for the a350 in this interesting 787 vs a350 battle: Malaysia Airlines just signed a lease agreement with Air Lease Corporation for a350 from late 2017 plus lease options for 2 more A350-900s as well as 2 A330-900neo.

I believe MH opted for this lease as it's the only way to get deliveries in 2017. This number seems to not be enough for MH needs though so I believe we will see a larger direct order soon (or maybe not so soon, after the airline gets better) for deliveries around or after 2020.

Quote:
Malaysia Airlines to fly Airbus A350 from late 2017

Malaysia Airlines has settled on the Airbus A350 as a cornerstone of its future fleet, signing a lease agreement for four of the advanced jets to begin flying from late 2017.
The A350-900s will be sourced through Air Lease Corporation, in a deal which also sees the Malaysian flag-carrier holding lease options for two more A350-900s as well as two A330-900neo aircraft.
The delivery timeframe spans from the fourth quarter of 2017 to the middle of 2018, and will see the A350s fitted with new business class seats which the airline describes as having "very large dimensions, and will be positioned above the industry standard for business class."
"The A350 is the most technologically advanced aircraft and we are confident that it will deliver exceptional passenger comfort and improve the overall efficiency of our fleet" said Malaysia Airlines’ Chief Executive Officer Christoph Mueller in welcoming the deal.
'Efficiency' is a word set to echo through the halls of Malaysia Airlines as Mueller works to re-invent the troubled airline through what he describes as "hard reset" program.
This has already included plans to 6,000 jobs from its 20,000-strong workforce, putting two near-new Airbus A380s and four Boeing 777-200ER jets up for sale, and embarking on a series of lounge closures including Singapore and Perth.
MAS has racked up debts approaching $1.5 billion since 2011, with a dire situation worsened by last year's twin tragedies of the disappearance of flight MH370 and the shooting down of MH17.
The airline was nationalised in late 2014 by Malaysia's government-owned investment arm Khazanah Nasional, which has pledged a A$2 billion injection to fund the dramatic restructure aimed at returning the airline to profitability by 2017.

First delivery to the 3rd operator (Finnair) coming up very soon (7 October)

Quote:
Finnair names the date for first A350 delivery

Finnair has confirmed that a ceremony marking handover of its first Airbus A350 will take place on 7 October.

The jet will be used on the Finnish flag carrier's Helsinki-Shanghai route from 21 November, adds the airline.

Finnair is also planning to operate within its Asian network A350 services to Beijing, Bangkok, Hong Kong and Singapore, and will later this year become the first airline to deploy the type to a US destination: New York.

Initially, however, the first A350 will fly more locally. "For the first few weeks, the new aircraft will serve crew familiarisation flights in Europe, with the first commercial flights taking place on 9 October to Amsterdam and Oslo," says Finnair's chief operating officer Ville Iho.

The airline acknowledges that it has "slightly adjusted its Airbus A350 long-haul launch schedule, due to changes in the expected delivery schedules of the company's first A350 aircraft, the needs of the crew familiarisation programme, and other operational factors."

It adds: "The company wants to offer the best possible customer experience for its customers, and has therefore adopted a slightly more conservative launch schedule than previously indicated."

Finnair has 19 A350s on orders, with deliveries running until 2023.

"Introducing 19 new aircraft into our fleet over a period of eight years is a major programme for Finnair," says Iho. "We have built the necessary flexibility into our preparedness plans and our A340 exit plan to adjust to any changes that may arise over the course of this massive programme, ensuring a smooth introduction of the new aircraft into our fleet."

Airbus Starts Assembly of the First A350-1000 The German sub-contractor Premium AEROTEC delivered to Airbus the first complete front fuselage section. The firm is responsible for the manufacture of the complete front fuselage section 13/14, the side shells of the rear fuselage (section 16/18), the floor structure and the pressure bulkhead, as well as the door frames, built in carbon fiber composite material.Once equipped the front fuselage section in Hamburg, it will be flown to Airbus Production Plant in Saint-Nazaire, where it will meet the nose fuselage section, already delivered by Stelia Aerospace, another Airbus sub-contractor.

Once joined together, the section will be delivered to the Final Assembly Line in Toulouse. Airbus relies on its A300-600 Super Transporters, known as Belugas to transport outsize loads between the different facilities of the firm located all over Europe. it seems like MSN005 will go to Air Caraibes; MSN003 will be donated to Aeroscopia Museum; Qatar Airways will soon receive MSN008 and MSN011; MSN016 is ready for delivery to Vietnam Airlines and Finnair will receive MSN018 on October 7th

MSN-004 may go to AerCap for onward leasing to Aer Lingus in H2 2016 I hear.

http://m.independent.ie/business/iri...-31362408.html

It is the same spec as MSN-005 which is shown in the link there but is actually going to Air Caraibes as we now know.

Are we sure it isn't MSN2?

No. Not sure. But if MSN003 was only fit for a museum I'd have thought MSN002 was therefore too 'non standard' for a fleet deployment.

We'll know eventually Nossiano. Both MSN002 and MSN004 are to be completed and sold.

In other news the first A350-1000 Engine to fly has arrived in Toulouse and is now being installed on the engine flight test aircraft. Photo of the pair of them here.

http://i1.wp.com/airinsight.com/wp-c...9/FLW_0728.jpg

It is over 10% more powerful than any A380 engine

Air Caraibes only ordered the MSN005 last month.

Airbus sold 1 A350-900 to a French company called Groupe Dubreuil, which is the parent company of Air Caraibes.

Finnair has taken delivery of their first of nineteen A350s today at a ceremony in Toulouse France. It is being flown home today. Congrats to Finnair on becoming the third operator in the world and first in Europe.
