I can see an A330-neo line converted to A350 surge production in perhaps 2019 and A330-neo orders upconverted to A350 at that time. For now an A330-neo order gets you a delivery slot.

For the next 2-3 years Airbus strategically need to get to their huge 60 a month target for the A320-neo family and bed in new US and Chinese assembly plants.

Then they can look at A350 and A330 orders in the round and scope out carriers on what they want from 2019 onwards.

There may or may not be a spare A380 line
available by then. We will know in 2 years for sure.

I also think the A350 extra long haul idea will be a dead duck by mid 2017 me. They will kite that in 2016 looking for takers.

Philippine Airlines has made up its mind on the next-generation aircraft as it selects the A350-900XWB over the B787 to replace the aging A340-300 fleet. From the CAPA Center of Aviation:

Philippine Airlines' international expansion continues with 5 new destinations, A350-900 HGW order
Quote:
Philippine Airlines (PAL) is further expanding its international operation as it grows its fleet and improves utilisation of its existing widebody aircraft. PAL’s international network will exceed 41 destinations in Jan-2016 compared to only 25 in Jan-2013.

PAL is adding five international destinations over the next two months, including two destinations in the Middle East and three in Australasia. Long-haul growth will resume in Mar-2016 with the launch of services from Cebu to Los Angeles, which will be PAL’s first widebody international route from Cebu.

Opportunities to further growth the long-haul operation will come in late 2016 as PAL adds two more 777-300ERs. The expected acquisition of a new higher gross weight version of the A350-900 will be used to upgrade New York to non-stops in 2017 and potentially be deployed to upgrade Toronto to non-stop and launch a fourth US destination.

I've never heard of an HGW version of the a350-900. The a350-900 ULR can actually be considered as an higher gross weight version of the a350-900 but as per the article the HGW is different from the ULR.

Looking at the not-so-far expected delivery dates, PAL will not place a new direct order, they will likely get those frames via leasing companies.

I just hope they order more, there are rumors there possibly will turn to 8 instead of 6.

This states expected acquisition, not an order.

Does anyone know where I can find a factsheet comparing the A330neo and the A350?

Philippine Airlines has not yet made the decision to go with the A350 over the 787. They are still negotiating with both manufactures, but will place an order before the end of the year.

source:
http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/...13J17H20151124

When they actually announce the order we know if Capa talked before their turn or if they were misinformed. I would say that the A350 is the front runner here, but Boeing will also work hard to give them a good deal.

The rumor that they will order 8 instead of 6 is also explained in the article. They will now order 6 planes directly with 6 options for later deliveries. That's 12 in total, which is actually an increase over the 8 they initially intended to order in total (firm + options). It's 12 instead of 8 and not 8 instead of 6.

Given the importance of range to Philippine Airlines, it would be a difficult order for Boeing to win. I expect we'll see the A350 in Philippine Airlines colors.

Interestingly, the new livery looks great on the A350XWB-900.
