The three Sri Lankan A350s which are all in manufacturing in TLS now were technically to be taken off Airbus by Aercap and then leased on to Sri Lankan.

Rumour in Dublin is that Aercap _might_ have interested Aer Lingus in taking one of the 3 frames in 2017 in time for the summer season. Aercap are to lease 9 A350s to Aer Lingus but the first of these was actually due for delivery in 2018, a year later.

Traffic growth in Dublin has been stronger than expected when Aer Lingus last formulated its long term widebody plan in March 2014 and a reformulation beyond wetleasing B767 and B757 to handle summer Transatlantic traffic is overdue.

I've read rumours that IAG were thinking of swapping EI's a350s for a330neos. I hope not, I'd like to see Aer Lingus grow their services out of Dublin. Of course not all of their long haul routes will require an aircraft as big as an A350, but I'd assume that Boston, New York and Chicago could fill one.

Thanks to the range of the A330neo versions--6,500 nm for the A330-900neo and 7,400 nm for the A330-800neo--it appears many airlines are waning their interest on the A350XWB in favor of the less-expensive-to-procure A330neo versions. 6,500 nm range is easily enough to cover most of Aer Lingus' long-range route structure.

While that is all true the a330neo-a350 swap story is last years Aer Lingus rumour and a more likely outcome is that AL will get a mix of A350 and A330neo or even some A330 regionals .....instead of the 9 A350s they still have on order. Traffic growth on DUB-US sectors is well north of 10% per annum starting 2014.

They need some bigger planes than an A330.

I've tried to find a pic of Sri Lankan first a350 too but I couldn't. I'm sure the planespotters in TLS will post them soon.

While browsing through the latest a350 pics, found this nice pic of Ethiopian's first a350. It's great to see how well Ethiopian is doing lately especially given how bad the airlines in the region are doing. It's an excellent achievement that it is one of the very early customers of both the 787 and the a350. The slogan "Pride of Africa" should be handed over by Kenya Airways to Ethiopian.

This thread is for news and discussion, not plane spotting.

If you want to post pictures without any commentary there's a sub-forum for that: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/forumdisplay.php?f=4043

That is MSN50, Thai's second a350 (not first). The first one (MSN44) is now in the paint haingar. Looking forward to seeing it rolled out of there to see whether the rumour of livery refresh is true or not.

Airbus to build 280-tonne MTOW A350-900

Quote:

Airbus will offer its A350-900 twin-engined widebody aircraft with a 280-tonne maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) from 2020.

The standard -900 aircraft—offered as a 268 tonne aircraft, will have the same MTOW as the recently launched ultra long-range version of the aircraft, adopted by Singapore Airlines for its nonstop flights to the US.

At the same time, the company will give the aircraft 2% reduction in fuel burn, with 1% coming from aerodynamic improvements, while the other 1% will come from changes within the Rolls-Royce XWB-84 engine, Airbus is due to announce here on the eve of the FIDAE Airshow on March 28.

Airbus says the combined MTOW increase and efficiency improvements will nudge the -900’s range up by an additional 500 nautical miles, if the aircraft is carrying 325 passengers in a three-class configuration.

Airlines have pushed us in two directions on the A350,” Airbus EVP-strategy Kiran Rao said in London on March 23, pointing out that the -900 is being offered in a regional configuration with down-rated engines as well as in the ULR variant.

Rao said airlines increasingly wanted flexibility within their fleets, with the option of moving regional aircraft into long-haul operations. By offering the higher-takeoff weight option into the standard -900 provides more flexibility depending on airline requirements, Airbus believes.

The company has already developed a 278-tonne MTOW higher gross weight version for Philippine Airlines and its transpacific Services.

“We can take a regional aeroplane and turn it into ultra-long range, and vice versa,” said Rao.

“We are creating a flexible aircraft, and airlines buy into flexibility.

Rao gave few details about the aerodynamic performance improvements, but the company says they have been flown and tested.

The A350 is making its Latin American public debut at the FIDAE Airshow, and is due to arrive here in Santiago from Buenos Aires on March 28.
