Vietnam Airlines orders 10 x a350s

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articl...us-a321-planes

I dunno if this is the same 10 they already ordered (on top of 4 in service) or another 10 A350s bringing A350 orders to 24 from 14, some leased.

Unlike many A350 operators Vietnam fairly lashes on the paint. I like that me.

Just wondering if anyone knows why some airlines like Qatar and Thai are operating both 787s and A350s? Is this to try them out before deciding?

They are full fledged orders so there isn't any thing to decide, the airlines have already ordered them already.

Hence Qatar uses their 788 as a regional connector because they have no crew rest area, where their 359 have the crew rest area for long range missions.

Why do airlines have 777s and A330s in their fleets?

They are different enough for different kind of missions.

List of airlines with both the 787 and the A350 in their fleet or on order.
Aeroflot
Air China
Air France
American Airlines
Avianca
British Airways
Delta Air Lines
Ethiopian Airlines
Etihad Airways
Japan Airlines
KLM
LATAM
Qatar Airways
Singapore Airlines
Thai
United Airlines
Vietnam Airlines
Virgin Atlantic Airways

Simply because with the exception of the 787-10 (Which is around the size of the A350-900, although it's range is less than its A350 counterpart)* the various models of both the 787 and A350 do not really compete with each other capacity wise. Thus one could have a (Future) WB fleet consisting of 787-8, 787-9, A350-900** and A350-1000** with the possiblity either the A350-900ULR or the 777-8X**** for those ULR which the other aircraft in your fleet cannot do on a decent payload.

*Yes there is the A350-800 (Which is around the size of the 787-9), but hardly anyone has it on order...

**Although if you have many routes which do not need the range of the A350-900, you can always have the 787-10 as well.

***Unless of course the airline has its 777-300ER fleet with 10-abreast Y, in which case the 777-9X would be better for their needs.

****Especially if the airline has also ordered the 777-9X as well, otherwise you might as well get the A350-900ULR instead.

Might want to scratch KLM and Air France off the list, because so far it's starting to look like KLM is taking the 787s, and Air France is taking the A350s.

and Aeroflot because they are trying to unload their 787 order because of the state of the Russian aviation market.

And not forgetting Virgin who only ordered A350s so they could unload their A380 order.

Parts are now arriving at Everett for the 1st 787 for Air France. It might be KLM that won't get the A350, but at this point I wouldn't rule anything after all the constantly changing fleet rumors.

Where's the logic behind that? Seriously, I'm strugling to find the logic behind your comment. You are saying they will eventually cancel their A350 order because they didn't want the A380? Why would that make sense.

As for Aeroflot, who knows what will happen. Things might change for the better for the Russian economy in a couple of years.

Another recent (far out) rumor is that Delta and AA might want to swap their 787 and A350 order, with AA taking the Delta 787s and Delta the AA A350s. Both airlines got the orders they might want to swap from mergers, it would be somewhat logical. But it's highly unlikely that it will happen in this way.

It doesn't matter anyway if some of these airlines will cancel either of them. They initially did make the decision to order both (except Delta and AA).

ps. China Eastern should also be on the list.

Last I heard the 787 orders for AF were "under review" - so they are definitely going ahead with the order then or might they sell/lease the planes off, if the cancellation fees are too high?

What's the story about KLM not getting the A350, again I've not seen anything about that happening.

I thought Airbus have said they aren't going to build the 800 variant and are trying to push the remaining 16 orders to the 900 variant or A330neo?

Correct. It still exists on a spec sheet though. An undead aircraft.

Don't think anyone wants a319 neo 787-8 or 737max7 frames any more either.
