They're not direct competitors, the A350 slots between (and overlaps) the B777 and B787 in terms of capacity, and does not have the exact same range as the two Boeing planes.

Aside from that, I'm digging the new blended wing design of planes. The A350 looks great, as does the B787 and B747-8.

Airbus Wins Order From Ethiopian Airlines for 12 A350 Jets

Nov. 15 (Bloomberg) -- Airbus SAS won an order from Ethiopian Airlines for 12 of its upcoming A350 aircraft in a deal valued at about $2.8 billion at list price, bringing its total orders for the plane to 505.

The airline had earlier signed a memorandum of understanding to buy 12 A350 passenger jets from Airbus after delays in the order for 10 of Boeing Co.’s 787 Dreamliner aircraft. That order, placed in June 2005, still stands.

The African airline will take first delivery of the A350 in 2017, and it may need to lease some planes before then, the company said at the Dubai Air show today.

Airbus’s A350, a long-range widebody plane, is set to compete with Boeing Co.’s 787 Dreamliner model, which seats about 250 to 300 passengers, as well as its 777, which seats 300 to 450. The first 787, originally scheduled for first delivery May 2008, has been pushed back by at least 2 1/2 years, with the company now promising it in late 2010.

Airbus has said it plans to deliver its first A350 widebody jetliner in 2013 and expects to reach capacity of 10 airliners a month at full production.

AVIANCA (Colombian Airlines) has ordered 20.





Avianca is the largest airline in Colombia and a major one in Latin America (Avianca together with its subsidiaries has the most extended network of destinations in the Americas and one of the largest and most modern aircraft fleet in the continent).

A350 XWB first composite lay-up manufactured in Nantes

Building on Airbus' evolutionary approach to aircraft composites development

The first composite lay-up for the A350 XWB has been manufactured today in Nantes, France, and marks the 'coming to life' of Airbus's new long range aircraft. This panel for the centre wing-box (CWB), entirely made of carbon, has a surface area of 36 square meters, making it the largest "monobloc" composite panel ever manufactured in Nantes, using a new state-of-the-art laying machine. Once assembled in Nantes, the CWB will be delivered to Airbus Saint-Nazaire for integration.

Along with other Airbus facilities, the Airbus plant in Nantes has a high expertise in composite material and is a leader in the manufacture of carbon fibre structural parts, such as the centre wing box and the keel beam for the A350 XWB. On the all-new aircraft Family, 53 per cent of the aircraft by weight will be composite-based, including major elements such as wings and fuselage.

"This key milestone for the A350 XWB programme has been made possible through Airbus' methodical and evolutionary approach to incorporating composites in its aircraft, and the consequent experience gained over many years," said Fabrice Brégier, Airbus Chief Operating Officer.

Didier Evrard, Head of the A350 XWB programme added: "The A350 XWB is becoming real, and further builds on our expertise in key areas such as: materials technology; predictive stress analysis and design; composite manufacturing; and composite engineering and assembly, including manufacturing processes and tool technology concepts."

The A350 XWB Family is Airbus' response to widespread market demand for a series of highly efficient medium-capacity long-range wide-body aircraft. With a range of up to 8,300nm / 15,400km, it is available in three basic passenger versions. Moreover, it has the widest fuselage in its category, offering unprecedented levels of comfort, the lowest operating costs and lowest seat-mile cost of any aircraft in this market segment. Powered by new-generation Rolls-Royce Trent engines, the A350 XWB Family is designed to confront the challenges of high fuel prices, rising passenger expectations, and environmental constraints.

Firm orders for the A350 XWB now stand at 505 from 32 customers worldwide.

A350-800 to be developed as -900 shrink

Airbus has opted to develop its A350-800 as a shrink version of the -900, an adjustment aimed at simplifying the programme. By optimising the A350 around the -900 as a baseline the airframer is adopting a similar strategy to its development of the A330-200/300.

It will potentially provide the -800 with a 3t increase in payload or extend its range by 250nm - although it will also raise the fuel-burn.
Airbus chief operating officer for customers John Leahy disclosed the plan at a briefing in Seville today, stating that definition freeze on the -800 had been completed. Designing the -800 as a derated version of the -900 will enable Airbus to avoid accommodating changes, for example, to the landing-gear.

Leahy says: "The more we looked at [changes on the -800], the more we thought: 'Why?'" He admits that the decision would increase the -800's fuel-burn by "a couple of percent" but insists this would still keep the twin-jet in the "same competitive region".

There would be no change to the entry into service date. Airbus has orders for 182 A350-800s, plus 248 -900s and 75 for the larger -1000.

Don't be so quick to judge. The 787 looked lovely in renders, but the actual product wasn't as sexy when the reality set in (the tail for example was changed from the initial renders). The earlier renders of the A350 were even more beautiful. Expect the actual product to be much different and 'toned down'.

The actual product will now look like the aircraft in Avianca renderings posted earlier, ie. the only difference is the cool sunshade-cockpit has been replaced by an A380-like one.
