What about cargo though? Newer planes are all about insane cargo capacity.

This week Airbus stated they intended to deliver 8 frames a month average in Oct Nov Dec during their results presentation.

So they need to maintain this tempo every week from now to mid Dec.

Thai are unable to launch a planned Australian services because Australia has not certified the A350-900 yet and seems in no hurry to do so.

Not entirely true!

Both QR and SQ happily operate the A350 to Australia. I think the problems with TG are the with Thai civil aviation regulation (or a lack of confidence in it).

I think it's simply a lack of confidence, which got even worse after the recent Phuket incident.
Thai Airways management said that they haven't got the green light for the same reason as sponge_bob mentioned and many news agencies reported it without double checking. What a shame!

Thai Airways to this day never explained the discrepancies that arose when AvCon inspected their A340-500 planes some years back. A lot of Asian countries are leery of their safety 'culture' , not just Australia.
