Those are very heavy duty routes... indeed a sign that the 744s will be gone really soon. I won't be surprised though if DL could preserve one of them... maybe soon, the 777s might be used more often on some transcontinental routes as part of its aircraft shuffling.

United has deferred another 4 2018 deliveries:

"UAL deferred four Airbus A350 aircraft out of 2018"

http://newsroom.united.com/2017-07-1...17-Performance

They just ordered 4 more 77Ws with deliveries in 2018. With the 747s already leaving the fleet at the end of this year it's going to be interesting to see what role they will give the A350-1000 when they will take delivery of their order.

I think the A350XWB-1000's (A35K) will likely be based in San Francisco (SFO). They will replace the 747-400 on long-range trans-Pacific flights.

No, this deferral actually means that they won't be replacing any 747s anymore. All 747s will now be gone by November 2017, earlier then planned. The A350s will only come in at the earliest in 2019, later then the originally planned 2018. The SF long haul routes are now already being replaced by the new 777s and 787s in the coming months.

I still think United will eventually assign the most--if not all--the 777-300ER fleet to transatlantic routes and routes to the most busy destinations in South America. The A350XWB-1000's will eventually take over the transpacific routes.

Could it be that either...

- the oldest B767-300s
- the oldest B777-200s

would be replaced with the A35K? And speaking of SFO, having some A35Ks based in NorCal wouldn't be a bad thing, especially if UA wants to expand much further (and compete) on its Transpacific services. Sure, the A35K would work very well on the Transatlantic flights too, but I believe the Transpacific market could command a larger passenger share than Transatlantic... maybe shuffling between services might be a best solution (e.g. after a Transatlantic flight to EWR, that same plane can go transcontinental to SFO, then it can go onwards as a Transpacific service).

When UA decide they will take delivery of their A350-1000 they most likely go towards their busiest long-haul routes that need the range of the A350. So yes, that means that they will most likely go trans-pacific. But right now it's pretty obvious that they have not made a decision yet on when this will happen. Their brand new 777-300ER or not likely to go anywhere else then the same routes the A350s would have gone if they would have replaced the 747s. It's rumored that United another 4 77Ws on top of the order announced at Paris last month. There you will have the growth in this segment.

For any 767 replacements they will have more 787s coming in. They just announced that their 787-10s deliveries are accelerated, the 1st one will already come mid 2018. The A350-1000 will also be simply to big for a 1 on 1 767 replacement.

The 777 are still a long way off from being replaced. Their non ER 777-200s have just gotten a dense lay-out for domestic use. On the international flights they use to operate they are replaced by 787s.

United is still figuring out where to use these A350s, it's even possible that they convert them to other types, from a simple conversion to the A350-900 or even to the A321. It's even possible that they will outright cancel the order. For now they stick to pushing back the 1st deliveries, which they will most likely do several times more.

It is already owned by the companies parent company: Groupe Dubreuil The plane was painted after delivery.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Some more info on American Airlines new delivery schedule:
"AAL's updated A350-900 delivery schedule has it taking its first 2 in 2020, then 5 each year thereafter thru 2024."
https://twitter.com/e_russell/status/892078657220603904
This will fuel the speculations about a possible conversion or even cancellation of the order.
