Alan Joyce of Qantas was on Bloomberg yesterday with a 'challenge'

https://fora.ie/qantas-longest-flights-3564236-Aug2017/

He believes that either (or both) of the A350ULR and the 777X may be able to fly non stop (20 hours ish) from Sydney to New York and Sydney to London ....and by 2022. That's 17,000 km. So if one of them would oblige he would buy their plane.

The A350-900ULR is due for delivery in 2018 with a n initial range of 16,000 km so it may be that a PIP (ongoing evolution of the design) will get it another 1000km range 4 years later. maybe it will take an A350-1000ULR to do it instead. ???

I cannot see anyone put up with an LCC for 20 hours solid but a full service airline is a different proposition entirely.

If Qantas (QF) will configure the plane with only premium class seating like what Singapore Airlines did with the A340-500 years ago, then either the A350XWB-900ULR or the 777-8 could fly non-stop from Sydney to New York city or London.

Singapore are launching an all business non stop Singapore - New York service next year like they did with that a340 but I get the impression Joyce wants a selection of premium economy as well as business customers onboard.

Economy passengers can take a stopover like they do now.

Now in the news is United converting their A350-1000 order into the A350-900. With this conversion deal the order total will increase from 35 to 45. And it could be officially announced later today.

"#UAL says A350s will arrive from 2022-2027, replacing 777-200s."

Indeed so:
http://www.airbus.com/newsroom/press...rder-to-4.html

So this was the "alternative" United was talking about? I suspected it was looking for a Boeing alternative. This increase doesnt necessarily mean increase in total price as it is from -1000 to -900, is it?

Edit: the bloomberg article has the figures.

Not surprised at the conversion. People forget United was the launch customer for the 777 and much of their fleet date from the 1990's. By 2020, when the first A350XWB-900's arrive, United would have some of the oldest 777's in service. I wonder will this portend that United may buy even more 777-300ER's, which will be among the very last 777-300ER's produced by Boeing before the 777-8 and 777-9 start production.

The curvy livery used on B787 it´s because the original B787 "Dreamliner" livery

Cathay Pacific adjust their A350 order. A part of the A350-1000 order will be converted to the A350-900 and there are some deferrals as well.

Quote:
This announcement also deals with a transaction which is related to the Transaction but which is not a notifiable transaction of the Company under Chapter 14 of the Listing Rules. An existing order for six Airbus A350-1000 aircraft is to be converted into an order for six smaller Airbus A350-900 aircraft (to be delivered in 2019 and 2020) and the delivery of five Airbus A350-1000 aircraft is to be deferred from 2020 to 2021.

Well there was also talk of new branding of Malaysia Airlines (new name/logo/uniform etc..) since the accidents and financial losses but I guess it's not their primary concern anymore for the moment
