with which aircraft would this be competing?? 787?? why would airbus design another plane?? would it replace a previous model?

If they have already A340 and A330 .... another one ??

you answered your own question: it replaces the A340 and the A330 families while competing with the 787s and the 777s from boeing.

This is true, But i'd just like to add this:

A350-800 / A330-200, 787-9
A350-900 / A330-300, A340-500, 777-200 (787-10)
A350-1000 / 777-300

You will notice that I have not included the A340-600 because in a standard 3 class layout it has 30 more seats than the A350-1000.

What I feel Airbus really need to do is launch a larger A350 that seats just under 400 people. This would close the massive gap between the A350 and the A380 and it is likely that Boeing will launch a bigger 777. Airbus would be silly to not bother competing in this segment.

No one has ordered an a340 in years. It has been slaughtered by the A330-300 and the 777-300ER.

The a330 probably still has a lot of life left, it is not going anywhere yet. The freighter version is a year old and the various military versions will be selling for years. Even the passenger version will probably sell in smaller quantities for about another decade.

This photo shows the Rolls Royce Trent XWB engine on the wing of an a380 in preparation for flight tests later this year.

future.architect, thanks for the picture!

Are there any rumors/thoughts to power A380 (or further variants) with the Rolls Royce Trent XWB? I admit that the question is very ambiguous.

Glad you like the photos.

I don't think Airbus have any immediate plans to port the Trent XWB to the A380. I am certainly not aware of any credible rumours. I think it is more likely that the current engines on the A380 will be upgraded incrementally rather than replaced.

The A380 already has very good economics so an engine change isn't really needed yet.

Thank you for your answer!

Due to talks regarding A380-900/1000, I just though if it's possible to mount the Trent XWB on the superjumbo.

Amazing engineering! Not just this airplane but all airliners. The complexity and detail of these airplanes are just incredible.

Lol yes, but while I do agree with you on this point, the fact that they are having so much trouble with the A350-1000 at this point kind of precludes any size ramp-up of sorts. The whole goal that airlines wanted to see achieved was parts and components interchangeability between the different stretches of the A350, but now, with the upgraded Trent XWB that the -1000 is slated to be installed with, most potential buyers are hurling criticism Airbus's way. If they launch a larger A350, say the 1100, I would estimate that the length required to seat the capacity that you're stating would have to be close to the A380-900 length of 78-80 meters. This would require yet another thrust increase to meet performance requirements aside from a whole slew of design nightmares that I don't think Airbus is ready for at this point.

In short, anything in the short-term about an even larger A350 is just a logistical nightmare, and should be held off on. If anything, it would satisfy customers if Airbus offered the upgraded Trent XWB on the -800 and -900 as options, then the issue about parts interchangeability would be at least mediated and potentially attract more customers for the -1000. So for the immediate future, it would be best for Airbus to worry about working with what they already have on the table as opposed to coming up with another semi-clean sheet design.

Not that I wouldn't appreciate an even longer aircraft with more powerful engines. ^.^ But that's just my tech fan side coming out and dreaming big.
