I think it all started with Boeing stating their 787 was going to be wider than Airbus's up graded 330 with new engines back in the day. Airbus had a poor response to their new generation 330 and launched the 350 XWB a few years later. So basically Extra Wide Body actually refers to the 350 being wider than the 787 that's all.

I guess it's just a marketing gimmick.

It made sense for about 2 months so that people didn't confuse it with the original A350. After that it has become redundant.

Whilst I agree that the XWB moniker is starting to look rather redundant, I think Airbus will keep it, simply because it differentiates the product from their legacy products. It's a good way of showing that the A350 is significantly different technologically from other airbus aircraft.

Also, consider how many other aircraft have a moniker: Neo, Dreamliner, Max I'm sure the new 777 will have a snappy nickname as well.

Rumour has it that taxi tests will begin 'tonight' (not sure if thats the 3rd or 4th of June).

They must really want her in the air. I suppose the hard work, careful planning and extensive testing is paying off. Click Me

Can someone please tell me exactly why there's so much smoke coming from the engines. I know it's normal upon first starting the engine, but I'd like to know why.

The smoke is generated when residual inhibiting fluid burns.
And more good news , the taxi tests have begun.

Looks like a few more critical steps to go before it can be tested for airworthiness and full certification from the EADS, FAA, and other aviation authorities. And by the way, it looks more slender than a B777 today.

AIRBUS DEFINED STRUCTURE OF CREW WHICH WILL EXECUTE THE FIRST FLIGHT OF A350-900

Moscow. June 4. Aviaport - the Airbus Company defined structure of crew which will carry out the first flight of the A350-900 plane. The crew from six people will be headed by the senior pilot tester Peter Chandler who participated earlier in A380 plane tests, however will pilot the first flight of the latest car for the first time, reports FlightGlobal.

The crew already examined A350-900 work during two-week courses of occupations on the exercise machines imitating flights of five-hour duration.

On June 2 production Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines were aboard the plane installed. Now primary testing of control systems by flight is held. Before A350-900 will rise for the first time in air, movement on airfield it should pass tests, and testing of system of braking - at first on low, and then at high speeds.

Exact date of the first flight of A350-900 yet isn't called.

I have a question regarding the different A350 types and their direct competitors from Boeing:

------------- vs. B787-800
A350-800 vs. B787-900
A350-900 vs. B787-1000 / B777-200ER/LR
A350-1000 vs. B777-300ER

Is this list correct? And why doesn´t Airbus have a competitor for the B787-800???
