JAL is one of the most boring liveries around, anyway...

I wouldn't be surprised if this is the deepest discount Airbus has ever given for a widebody order. Congrats to both parties!

JAL needed to buy such a large A350XWB order for two reasons:

1. They've lost a lot of capacity with the 747 retirement.
2. The remaining widebody fleet of 777-200 and 777-300 (non-international) models flying domestic routes out of Haneda are starting to age and will have to be replaced within the next 7-8 years.

Do not be surprised that JAL will use the A350XWB-1000 (A35J) to fly between Tokyo-Narita and San Francisco/Los Angeles by 2020.

One could argue that this is a good case of 'right-sizing'.

After JAL's defeat, next battle's gonna be ANA. According to reuters:

Quote:
ANA Holdings Inc (9202.T) wants around 35 aircraft to replace its long-haul Boeing 777s and, like JAL, is considering both the A350 and the Boeing 777X, the re-engine, updated variant of the popular long-range wide-body jet.

After the JAL setback, ANA is fast becoming a "can't lose at any cost" deal for Boeing, whose executives are under pressure to "do everything they can" to win the deal, said an industry source close to the U.S. planemaker.
Expect huge discounts from Boeing and lots of dirty tactics.

Dirty tactics don't work to win Japanese orders.

Airbus probably didn't even address the problems with the 787 explicitly to JAL during the negotiations. They were all about building a relationship based on trust and respect, that's what Airbus has done to secure this order. Boeing was in damage control mode, doing anything dirty would have worked against them. Since the A350 is a much better replacement for JALs 777s then the 777X Boeing could have only won this order on their own merits if they would not have any problems with the 787 and offer JAL a very steep price. The only other way that Boeing would have won this order was if Airbus would have messed up the negotiations, not gaining the trust that was needed to win.

There's one big difference between JALs and ANAs fleets that give should give Boeing a slightly better position with their 777X pitch towards ANA. And that's sheer size. Even though their 565 seat 747-400Ds are now leaving the fleet ANA still operates the 514 seat 777-300s, that won't be possible with the A350-1000. ANA's 777-300ER fleet is also slightly younger then JALs and they even ordered 3 more earlier this year. ANA will start to replace their 777s a bit later, giving Boeing a bit more room.

In the end Boeing and Airbus will both do all their best to win this order, but it will be ANA who will decide and they are looking at both manufactures so it could go both ways.

Basically dirty tactics wont win orders. It is all about the quality of the product. Airbus had a product that allowed for JAL's decision. I think it will come down to the same thing with ANA. I hope that ANA will make the best call for themselves. JAL can still order the 777X right. They can always order the 777X to open or expand capacity. It will be interesting to see what ANA does with their order. Thanks Momo1345 for always keeping things in perspective.
