Question: does anyone know what is the MSN number of the first production plane for Qatar Airways?

Aircraft Purchase Fleet, who ordered 12 A350-800s for Alitalia cancelled their order last month.
http://www.airbus.com/company/market/orders-deliveries/

The total number of A350-800 order is now 34.

Momo did they at least switch to the larger 359? Latest news regarding the Etihad stake in Alitalia is that Etihad has spent the last couple of weeks going through Alitalia's books, and a deal could be signed as early as next week for a stake in the airline. I think the original order was by EuroFly.

I'm sure if Etihad goes forward with the Alitalia venture they will order even more A350's, if not a couple 1000 versions.

It was a real cancellation, no conversion to the A359 or the A330 for that matter.

It's indeed likely that the Etihad deal is the reason. They might order more A350s because of this, but they could also place more A330s or the 787s at Alitalia. It's currently unclear what kind of plans Etihad has for all "their" European Airlines.

Or maybe Etihad told Alitalia to scrap the deal because they can get an even better deal. I'm sure Alitalia wont get a penalty for scrapping the deal either. Smart thinking on they're behalf.

Off topic but Jet Airways hasn't made a wide body order either, if the Alitalia deal goes through we might see something at the next big airshow this summer with a compound order.

Alitalia has never confirmed to want the A358, the original order was by AirOne (AP Fleet is an company of Toto Group and Eurofly was an company of Meridiana) as were the A320 and A330 that Alitalia now has in its fleet.

These orders were made for the expansion of AirOne following the abandonment of Malpensa by Alitalia in partnership with Lufthansa and Star Alliance (United had collaborated with Air One in Boston and Chicago) later it was forced to merge with the new Alitalia and the orders of the A320 and A330 were merged into Alitalia to replace the MD80 and B767 but for the A358 they have never expressed interest.

They might not have been interested in the A358, but the A359 would have made a perfect replacement for Alitalia's 772s at some point in time. They could easily have deferred a converted order into early 2020s without too much of a financial penalty.

That makes it interesting why it's cancelled now. Was it Etihad's involvement or it possible to cancel without penalties 5 year after the order was placed?

I dont think Airbus can give Alitalia a penalty for cancelling a plane that was first changed then is on the verge of being quaushed for a whole new design.

Second lm sure Airbus knows very well if Etihad buys into Alitalia there is a potential order for the larger A350 models plus a large NEO order.

The penalties for cancellations are usually reversed penalties. It's not a matter of paying the manufacturer a penalty, but a matter of the manufacturer paying back any advanced payments to the airline/leasing company.

And I highly doubt that any decision from Airbus on this matter is based on the assumption that Etihad might place another order. First because there is no Etihad - Alitalia deal yet. It's still Italy, at this stage there's no certainty that it will actually happen.

And secondly, how likely is it that Etihad will place another order with Airbus because of the deal with Alitalia. The last time Etihad placed a big A350 order they also placed a huge order at Boeing. Airbus won't just let go of an order because their be a new order on the way from another airline.

The only other viable reason why the order could have been cancelled without penalties is that it was an A358 order.

Airbus should drop the A350-800 completely and think rather about a possible development of a A350-1100 to compete with the 777-9X.

The market below the A350-900 could be covered by a heavily modernised A330-200neo/300neo.

That´s how it should look like:

A330-200neo...vs....787-8
A330-300neo...vs....787-9
A350-900........vs....787-10
A350-1000.......vs...777-8X
A350-1100.......vs...777-9X

In case of a cancellation, the airline will lose its deposit money. Therefore customers usually defer deliveries in case of financial problems.

It's not a secret that Airbus is pushing their customers to move away from the A350-800, probably to make room for another project. The Aircraft Purchase Fleet cancellation probably means Airbus made them a deal: switch to the larger -900, or cancel the order without penalty.

I doubt Etihad had anything to do with it.

In fact Etihad has nothing to do with this cancellation, they aren't still in Alitalia.
AP Fleet is not an company of Alitalia which, i repeat, hasn't expressed interest for the aircraft therefore the order has been canceled (rather i still have to understand why they waited so long to cancel the order)
