If I look at these numbers (a350-1000 can sit 475 ppl in 1-class configuration vs 550 for the 777-300ER), I would jump quickly into a conclusion that the a350-1000 is much smaller than the 777-300ER. But in fact, they are very very similar in terms of capacity. They have have approximately the same length, the 777's cabin is 10-inch wider than the a350's however the a350-1000 has the advantage of having only 4 doors compared to 5 doors for the 777-300ER (that's already a few additional rows of seats for the a350-1000). So, I would say, they (a350-1000 and 777-300ER) are very very similar in terms of capacity unless the count is made with the assumption that the a350 is 9-abreast and the 777 10-abreast.

Emirates to reconsider Airbus A350 order
By Andrew Parker in London

Airbus is to get a second chance to sell its new A350 aircraft to Emirates Airline after the fast-growing Gulf carrier revealed it would take a fresh look at the case for buying the long-range passenger jet, in a head-to-head contest with Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner.

Airbus suffered a serious blow earlier this month when Emirates cancelled an order for 70 A350 jets, worth $16bn at catalogue prices when the deal was announced in 2007.

Emirates was supposed to be a launch customer for the A350, due to enter service later this year, and the airline’s decision not to proceed with its order was the Toulouse-based aircraft maker’s largest ever cancellation. Shares in Airbus were hit, as were those of Rolls-Royce, which makes the jet’s engines.

Tim Clark, Emirates’ president, told the Financial Times the airline would hold discussions with Airbus and Boeing either late this year or next year about the merits of buying the A350 or the Dreamliner.

[...]

Now everything is clear! Tim Clark wants Airbus and Boeing to fight with each other for this new order so he can get a better price for the planes.
Therefore he had to cancel the previouis order for the A350.

Airbus has announced that the fifth A350 test aircraft, A350 MSN005, has taken its first flight, taking the programme to the final stage of certification. The MSN005 is the second passenger cabin-equipped A350 tasked with route proving and ETOPS validation, and embodies the operationally definitive configuration for Type Certification duties.

The only flaw is that even with possible discounts from Airbus the prices for the A350 are now higher then they where in 2007 because of inflation and a bigger demand for the plane.

I think it's much more about choice. Emirates could have easily renegotiated a deal with Airbus to change the order, cancel a part of it and change the remaining orders to the A350-900 Regional. By going the route they have gone they not only have the option of choosing both the A350 and the 787, they also have the opportunity have some more influence on the final specs of a A350-900 Regional or the 787-10.

787-777X-A380-900NEO

That would be a formidable line-up - the most efficient airline in the world.

They should post a zoomed in picture of those brakes. Love to watch them catch fire under maximum braking.

BTW, are spoliers and/or reverse thrusters allowed in this test or is it just the brakes?

Neither spoilers nor thrust reversers are allowed on this test, as far as I remember, and the brakes are heavily worn-out to simulate a worst case scenario situation.
