It's just a "challenge". Just like how the media outlets pitted Airbus and Boeing, saying one was banking on hub-to-hub, and the other point-to-point, when the reality is far from that.

Similarly, the A350 and 787 are very different aircraft which serve different markets with a bit of overlap.

I'm still very much in favor of the flying competition

I believe Delta's A350XWB-900 order is primarily for transpacific flights from DTW, SEA, LAX and (to a smaller extent) SFO. Mind you, I do think Delta may look at buying some A350XWB-1000 planes, especially for flying to Beijing (PEK) and Shanghai (PVG).

Finnair has now 19 A350s on order.

Finnair orders eight additional A350 XWBs

Repeat order from a launch customer for Airbus’ new generation Widebody aircraft

3 December 2014

Finnair, a launch customer for the A350 XWB, has signed an agreement, firming up the order for eight additional A350-900s. Finnair was the first airline to select the A350 XWB and will be the first European airline in autumn 2015 to receive the all new Airbus Widebody. Finnair’s A350 XWBs will seat 297 passengers in a two class configuration. The aircraft will be deployed on Finnair’s long-haul routes to Asia and America.

"Our strategy centers on growth, taking advantage of the unique geographical location of our Helsinki Hub, which offers the fastest connections between Europe and Asia. The A350XWB aircraft will be essential in delivering on our strategy, as they enable growth in both passenger and cargo traffic, offer our customers top class travel experience and considerably enhance our cost competitiveness. Firming up the order for additional eight Airbus A350 XWB aircraft demonstrates our commitment to growth and to operating a world class Airbus fleet", says Pekka Vauramo, Finnair CEO." Together with Airbus and our other partners we are preparing to make the A350 entry into service a success.”

‘’We share a long-standing relationship with Finnair and are delighted by their continuing endorsement of the A350 XWB, which will integrate seamlessly into Finnair’s all Airbus fleet,” said John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer – Customers. “Finnair will benefit from the A350 XWB’s latest technologies and unbeatable efficiency, enhanced by the unique fleet commonality only Airbus offers.”

Finnair currently operates an all Airbus fleet of 45 aircraft (30 A320 Family aircraft and 15 A330s/A340s). Finnair was launch customer of the A350, and in 2007 placed an order for 11 A350-900s, including an option for further eight. This agreement brings the total committed order to 19 A350-900s. The A350 XWB was designed above all for passengers’ comfort and well-being and will provide Finnair’s passengers with an excellent flight experience with the most advanced cabin with wider seats in both business and economy class.

After the delta deal, does Airbus still have available slots left for this decade? I'm asking that thinking of the next big order battle between the a350 and the 787, Malaysia Airlines' upcoming order. I believe, like Delta's order, delivery date is the main factor affecting the decision as they are looking for deliveries starting from 2017.

After Delta's order it doesn't look like Airbus will again have the same kind of advantage over the 787. Airbus will probably have some slots left to the end of the decade, but so does Boeing with the 787. Maybe if there will be some conversions from the A350 to the A330neo, that could open up some more slots. Same goes for some more cancellations, there are still several orders that are a bit doubtful that they will ever be delivered. But those could also already been used for Delta.

As for the next big battle, I think it's fair to say that it won't be an order by Malaysian Airlines after all their troubles this year. Let them decide on a new direction first, then let them pick any new plane that fits their new flight plan.

I would pick Turkish Airlines instead, after all the rumors on possible 747-8 & A380 orders 2015 might actually be the year when they decide between the 787 and the A350 instead (if they won't go for both of course)

Flightglobal reports that the 1st delivery has been postponed.

Qatar Airways A350 delivery suffers last-minute delay

Delivery of the first Airbus A350-900 to launch customer Qatar Airways has been postponed indefinitely for unspecified reasons.
The Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-powered aircraft was due to be handed over to Qatar Airways this weekend in Toulouse, with a formal ceremony scheduled to take place on 15 December at Doha's Hamad International airport following the aircraft's ferry flight.
In a statement, the airline says the delivery has been postponed but does not explain the reason: "Qatar Airways announces that the Airbus A350 aircraft ceremonial transfer of title has been postponed until further notice."
