Wow, Qatar flies a 787-8 between Doha an Dubai. Isn't that aircraft quite inefficient for such short hops

Not really considering QF operated B767's & A330's on the triangular SYD-MEL-BNE route.

Not the mention the domestic use of the 787 by ANA.

Even with their long range the 787 and the A350 will still be efficient enough for these kind of short hops.

Check out video, it's pretty cool. You don't get to see this kind of video often. Airbus should do this for every new operator (at least the first few).

Who is more likely to win this? I personally can't tell, I think they have the same chance to win this considering that Ethiopian has been quite loyal to Boeing but also has 14 a350-900 on order.

Quote:
CEO: Ethiopian Airlines considers Airbus A350-1000, Boeing 777X

Ethiopian Airlines is evaluating the Airbus A350-1000 and the Boeing 777X as it considers further widebody order plans, CEO Tewolde Gebremariam has confirmed to ATW.
“We are evaluating both the Airbus 350-1000 and the Boeing 777X. We have not yet determined the numbers, but we may need up to 20 airplanes,” Gebremariam told ATW Monday.

The evaluation started last month and will be finalized after three months, several Ethiopian media outlets are reporting.

In the meantime, the Star Alliance carrier is preparing for Airbus A350-900 operations as it is expects to begin taking delivery of its first of 14 of the type from 2016.

“We have already started the entry-into-service process with Airbus,” Gebremariam told ATW on the sidelines of the Star Alliance chief executive board meeting in New Delhi recently, adding the new aircraft will enable the airline to grow.

In 2015, he expects 10 more new aircraft for delivery, including two Boeing 777-300ERs, “which are expected for delivery in May.”

Last Sunday, Ethiopian took delivery of its latest Boeing 787 on lease from International Lease Finance Corp. (IFLC).

Will all carriers have the "racoon mask" on their A350's? I don't think they need it IMHO, it doesn't suit the various liveries the A350 is wearing. I seriously hope VN doesn't give theirs masks like QR. Or are the 'masks' a requirement by Airbus for performance reasons?

I'm sure the mask is for a higher purpose like shielding the pilots from glare/sun light rather than aesthetics.

It does not surprise me at all. Heck, other airlines would operate similar short hops with even larger aircraft... the largest aircraft the following routes get are:

- Tokyo - Seoul: B747-400 (especially HND-GMP)
- Taipei - Hong Kong: B747-400
- Manila - Hong Kong: B747-400
- Bangkok - Hong Kong: A380
- Beijing - Guangzhou: A380
- Singapore - Jakarta: B777-300ER (if not B747-400)

It all depends on demand, especially when holidays come along. And by the way the B787 used on short hops is necessitated to allow more hours to be clocked on those aircraft, not to mention, some of them can also double as training flights as well.
