AB was betting on the hub and spoke model that prevailed in the mid-80's would continue to be dominant, and that ever larger aircraft would be needed to support that. Boeing saw that flyers and airlines were more interested in direct flights on long, thin routes, and didn't want transfers through hubs. Because of this, they pushed the development of the 787.

Boeing was largely correct (as the relative order count between the 787 and A380 can attest.) When AB saw this, they hurriedly put together the A350, which evolved into the XWB varient. This has had the desired effect, as they've gotten a decent amount of the market. But is definitely a "me too" aircraft. AB got lucky that Boeing screwed up the production engineering of the 787, and didn't get it delivered on time. If they did, and had more open delivery slots, the opening for the A350 may have well slammed shut.

However they where caught by surprise when the A340 failed in the marketplace and the 787 came along to compete with the A330 (the A330's success also took Airbus by surprise somewhat)

You've just bought into both Airbus' and Boeing's marketing speak.

In reality, point-to-point flying had already proliferated with the A300/310, A330, 767s and smaller 777s. The challenge for both manufacturers had been rightsizing this medium-sized airliner. Boeing had the 767, but in its quest for range, sat too little passengers. Airbus accidentally found the right size and right range in the A330, but chose to focus on the A340. It's only when the A340 started failing, and the A330 continuing to sell out that they realized they actually had a winner. For this reason, Boeing aimed the 787 exactly at the A330. The 787-8 and 787-9 are the same size as the 332 and 333.

In addition, when they first unveiled the 7E7, Boeing had incredulous claims about the 787 being incredibly fuel efficient. But when the first standard 787s began flying, we found out that the fuel savings, especially the 787-8, were no better than the A330-200. They only found more savings on the 787-9.

Ya and Boeing realized what they did wrong with the 787-8 and how it did not match the A330 fuel savings and they did more research on the 787-9 and achieved better fuel savings and thats why more airlines are switching to the 787-9. Airbus will do the same thing with the A350-1100. They will find better savings with the A350-1100 over the -900.

Thai Airways International (THAI)

The first Airbus A350 XWB aircraft for Thai Airways International (THAI) is on schedule for final assembly (FAL) in October,
the Toulouse-based manufacturer said. First delivery is expected for mid-2016.

THAI will acquire a total of 12 A350 XWB aircraft, with four on direct order and eight on lease. The aircraft will be used on long-haul services to Europe and in Asia.

The “forward fuselage” was manufactured and assembled by Premium Aerotec in Augsburg, Germany, and delivered to Airbus in Hamburg, Germany for equipping
(including brackets, tubes, pipes, systems). This section will then be flown from Hamburg to Saint-Nazaire, France, on board Airbus’ Beluga transport aircraft.

Vietnam airlines took delivery of its first a350 today making VN the second a350 operator.

By the way, those in-flight videos are awesome. Keep doing them Airbus (at least for the first few operators).

I love this plane! I really like the Boeing 787, but the A350 is more sleek, and has that insect-like Airbus design, which I love

Few hours ago the A350-900 MSN002 has landed at El Dorado International Airport in Bogotá for the very first time in Colombia. It is going to be introduced to the Avianca executives.

Avianca, the second largest airline in Latín America has 10 firm orders and another 10 options for this model.
