Great pics. The first I've seen of Russia's far eastern seaboard.

Vladivostok pics

Here are a few pics that i have taken during my visit last year. Since then nothing has changed much.
Most buildings in the city are about 40 years old and there has been no change since the 1980. There was only one UC building during my visit.

I always found it a bit odd that lots of cities in Russia are seeing new construction projects..but one of the most important cities in the Russian Far East, still appears the same. Even Yakutsk got a bunch of new buildings, and its located far away from major markets and infrastructure.

Vladivostok should be the equivalent of St. Petersburg on the pacific ocean and be the window to the east for Russia. It definitely looks drab and in need of the modernization being felt in other large Russian cities. It looks closed and soviet.

I was re-reading one of my Russian Far East business guides.. basically said that Vladivostok holds ALOT of potential..but is considered a very risky place to invest simply because the crime, politics and corruption are so bad.. they go up north to cities in Khabarovsk Krai instead. Seems like Putin also isn't too happy with what's going on in Primorskii.

Like in most Russian cities, there are some projects in Vladivostok, mostly high rise apartments though.

Also, there are plans to renovate the airport

That brown building in the third last pic was the only one under construction when I was there.

Vladivostok

I'm making this thread because I think that Vladivostok deserves to be better represented here. The pics have been found by me un peu partout in the net.

The city of Vladivostok was founded in 1860 as a Russian stronghold in the Far East. The city's name means literally "Posess the East". The strait on which the city was founded was called Eastern Bosphorus and its bay, Golden Horn, in commemoration of the old Constantinople's bay.

Vladivostok coat-of-arms

Railway station. This is here where the Transsiberian Railway, the world's longest, ends.

The city at once turned into a thriving commercial center with a lot of beautiful architecture

However, the key role of the city is to be Russia's naval stronghold in the Pacific.

The fortress of Vladivostok used to be the strongest in the entire Pacific region.

The city has many monuments commemorating feats of the Russian Navy.

Court

Just to remind you that we are in the Far East
