IIRC, the collapse of Zimbabwe's economy has led to more use of steam locomotives because of a shortage of oil.

Secondly, I would hazard a guess that some these photos show special trains laid on for railfan tours. (FarRail, for instance, runs tours to Zimbabwe.) And some of the photos might date back to the 1980s or before.

Never heard of regular steam services in Russia, seen steam engines in museums only. Granted, Russia is very big and maybe there are a couple of back of beyond corners somewhere in Siberia where it's cheaper to use an old engine once a month for a local route, but it's improbable.

It's a pity really - I'd like to ride steam train some day. But it's just impractical for regular services - unless it's some kind of tourist route.
