Sumarice Memorial Park | Kragujevac,Serbia

Sumarice Memorial Park is settled at the western verge of Kragujevac. It is the site of one of the most brutal crimes committed during WWII – Kragujevac massacre. The park, established as the institution in 1953, covers area of about 3.5 square kilometers, and contains the thirty mass graves at the spots of the 1941 executions.

Ten of the graves are marked with monuments. Certainly the best known is
- "Broken Wing" – Monument to Executed Pupils and Professors created in 1963 by Serbian sculptor Miodrag Zivkovic.

- ""Crystal flower" In addition to grave where they buried in the Shooting ranges cleaner shoes, Roma, boys from 12 to 15 years, there is a monument to "Crystal flower (Nebojša Delja, applied artist, 1968). Reduced geometrical forms of flowers and rounded čašivama signifies only developed bud, presečen in two parts. Belina flower emphasizes moral purity boys, a black socket, in addition to color their Tena, associated with death and darkness underground world.

- "Stone sleeper"Among the firing range Kragujevac was a lot of people from surrounding villages and it is a monument dedicated to the "stone sleeper" (Jelica and Gradimir Bosnic, architect, 1969). Presents a special architectural - skulptoralnu unit in the Memorial - the park. Venac of concrete blocks, uneven height and rounded and large marble statues, the monument reminds us of the farmyard, in which so dominated by women.

-Old military cemetery

At the entrance to the Kragujevac Šumarice, on the left side of road for Gornji Milanovac, is one of the oldest military cemetery in Sumadija. It was in the nineteenth century, and it was buried a large number of soldiers from the Balkan and the First World War.
Serbian military cemetery in Šumaricama is the inexhaustible source of information and monuments to him, according to the shape of the abundance of ornaments, valuable contribution to our national creation. Ornaments are painted different colors, and represented the various motives, the cemetery provides exceptional value.

In the vicinity of the cemetery is the art piece in the lava length (the length of 2:20 m, width 1 m and height of the front part of 1 m) which is before World War I and King Peter of Yugoslavia order for the temple of St.. George of the Oplenac. However, the Austro - Hungarian occupational authorities were ordered in 1915. to take a lion figure uKragujevac and set in front of the cemetery where the burial place of the occupying soldiers, dead or died in Sumadija. Second, the same as, a lion figure, Take the 1918. Austrians in the unknown direction, despite all efforts to this day it is not entered in the track.

On the south peak of Sumarice park is the grave of 44 Slovak soldiers executed in in June of 1918, after the break of one of the biggest mutinies in the Austro-Hungarian army in WWI. In the central area is old soldiers' graveyard.

The furthest north-west area covers the artificial lake called Jezero u Sumaricama – Lake in Sumarice.

Besides being Memorial Park with the aim "to keep and cherish the memory of the tragic event and, in the face of contemporary challenges, raise awareness of the young about it so that past crimes could not happen again", Sumarice is simply – the beautiful park. Citizens of Kragujevac do spend time in it during all seasons.

Entrance to the Sumarice Memorial Park is at the upper end of main street – Kralja Akeksandra I Karadjordjevica (King Alexander I Karadjordjevic Street), just behind Gornji park – Upper Park.
