Nuclear Power Plant | Coast Province | Proposed
![]() Koeberg SA Kenya identifies sites for nuclear power plant 13 August 2009 | By Wawunda Mwangasha Situated near Cape Town, Koeberg is the only nuclear power station on the African continent The government of Kenya has identified construction sites for a nuclear power plant, potentially the first in Africa outside South Africa. A senior engineer for the Kenyan government, Rolex Kirui, recently said one site has been identified near the coastal region and construction will begin as soon as an ongoing environmental study is completed. Kirui added that a second potential site has been identified in western Kenya, next to Lake Victoria. Plans for the nuclear plant’s construction were first announced by Kenya’s energy minister, Kiraitu Murungi, in October last year. Murungi recently told SciDev.Net that there is a shortage of 3,000 megawatts of electricity for the country. Kenya produces only 1,100 megawatts of electricity annually and is ranked 22nd in Africa. “With nuclear energy there is potential to generate four times that amount or even more,” he said. South Africa is the only county in Africa to have a fully operational nuclear power plant. Nigeria and Egypt are in the process of planning their own plants. Kenya is, however, the first to both identify a site and undergo an environmental study. The construction of the Ksh80 billion (US$1 billion) project could begin in September 2010 once a feasibility study is complete. However, it will take at least five years before the plant is operational as extensive inspection must be carried out by authorities such as the Radiation Protection Board and the National Environmental Management Authority. www.constructionkenya.com

Brilliant news, hopefully should reduce the cost of manufacturing and open up new business oportunities especially in the rural areas

Kenya is currently doing so poor in as far as electricity supply is concerned their are many numerous small power projects that as yet are not adding up. The nuclear project when completed successfully will provide 3000 MW + The current 1500 MW should be able to sustain the country for the net 10 years I think.

France to help Kenya on nuclear plan
France to help Kenya on nuclear plan
Kenya’s Prime Minister Raila Odinga giving his keynote address on climate change in Stockholm, Sweden, where he attended the European Development day meeting. PMPS By PMPSPosted Tuesday, October 27 2009 at 12:01 France has accepted to help Kenya develop its nuclear potential, Prime Minister Raila Odinga has said. Mr Odinga, who jetted back in the country on Monday night, said world leaders had pledged to support the government’s efforts to harness nuclear energy. He announced that the country may soon install the first ever nuclear plant to bridge the local energy deficit after the French government consented to a proposal to jointly develop a facility in Kenya. “We have opened talks with the French to establish a nuclear energy reactor in the country as we also pursue expansion of green energy production to facilitate industrial development” he said. He said France through the French Development Agency (DFA) had increased funding to geothermal related activities at a cost of Sh540 billion ($ 7.2 billion) to boost energy supply in the local market. Mr Odinga said the better part of the grant was earmarked for the expansion of the Ol Karia geothermal plant whose impact was crucial for the country’s quest to realise the Vision 2030 dream. He said the trip in France, China and Switzerland presented a forum to market the Kenyan dream to the developed world ahead of the global conference on climate change scheduled for December in Copenhagen. The PM, however, challenged leaders of the developing nations to push for tangible and reasonable funding on environmental conservation initiatives to realise the desired impact of the activities. He said the Sh7.5 trillion ($100 billion) British Premier Gordon Brown had proposed for mitigation of environmental issues in the third world ahead of the conference was insufficient. Mr Odinga urged like minded nations to put up a spirited fight in advocating for a reasonable resource allocation to restore the fragile ecosystem to reverse the effects of climate change. “Copenhagen is a do or die situation because it create a for a where nations can push for reasonable funding that can secure the adaptation and mitigation of the environmental concerns in developing world” he said. The PM cited the Mau complex conservation initiative as a case in study which required sound financial resources at later phases to amicably restore the degraded water tower. He took the opportunity to dispell fears that country had in recent past appeared leaning to the East at the expense of countries in West and insisted that cooperation with China was in good faith. Mr Odinga put records straight that the partnership the government had with the Republic of China was mainly of infrastructural, cultural, educational and trade ventures for the mutual benefit of both nations. He said the Chinese input in local economic growth could sway the outcome of the vision 2030 dream in a big way because the bilateral engagement treaded on key pillars of development. “The relation with China is not at the expense of any other country whatsoever but we have joint initiatives in railway, roads, ports, airport and telecommunication sectors,” the premier stressed. He said the coalition government would ensure that the clamour for dual citizenship among Kenyans in the Diaspora become a reality when the new constitution was in place. Cabinet Ministers James Orengo, Prof Anyang Nyongo , Paul Otuoma and several MPs received the premier at the airport. http://www.nation.co.ke/News/-/1056/...z/-/index.html brilliant mr prime minister, this and like other project of this magnitude is what we need to secure the future of our children![]() ![]() |

You can't build a nuke bomb with lightly enriched Uranium, it's only good for dirty bomb. But good luck with the Nuke energy. i 'm a fan of Nukes. |

They shouldn't have a problem of storing the waste. but the problem the west will have is , how safe will it be? before it fails in the hands of those they fear to make a dirty bomb.
I don't think they will get the heavy reactor. They will most likely get a light water reactor that will only produce lightl enrinched Uranium. The West is so terrified of Muslims putting their hands on weapon grade Uranium. (i'm not saying Kenya is an Islamic state, But they have significant Muslim population). |

Like all other waste - Kibera
Seriously, most of radioactive waste is low-active (such as clothes and tools which get radioactivated in work at nuclear reactor) and looses it's radioactivity quite fast (1-2 years in storage). After that it is just waste. There very little high-active material (such as used uranium) that need hundreds of years to store. One can easily find for example a abanonded mine that can be used for storing high-active waste for longterm. But I wonder why so little interest in solar power in kenya. Expensive to install yes, but long term very cheap. There is lots of Arid area we have no better use. Spain is having 10% of it's electricity provided by solar in a few years. |

Agency to partner with Kenya in developing nuclear energy
The International Atomic Energy Agency has agreed to partner with Kenya in its quest to develop nuclear energy as an alternative source of power.
During talks with Prime Minister Raila Odinga at their headquarters in Vienna yesterday, the Director General of the IAEA Yukiya Amano said he is keen to have the agency become a useful tool in addressing needs of developing nations. Mr Odinga met Mr Amano after opening the 13th Session of the General Conference of the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation, in Vienna. The PM said reliance on hydroelectric power has, however, failed Kenya, making the economy unable to compete with other economies. Alternative source "We have to look into alternative sources of power and nuclear looks credible," Odinga said. He asked the agency to help Kenya build capacity by training local scientists on developing nuclear power. "When you talk about nuclear energy among laymen, people think of weapons. They think we are going to war," the PM said. Amano congratulated Kenya for considering nuclear energy. He said Kenya would have to commit to support a code of conduct governing use of nuclear power. |
