Trenitalia Jazz EMUs enter service in Piedmont
Wednesday, July 23, 2014

TRENITALIA's new Alstom Jazz EMU was formally presented to regional and local council representatives from the Piedmont region of northern Italy at Turin Porta Susa station on July 18 by the new Italian State Railways (FS) CEO Mr Michele Elia and Trenitalia CEO Mr Vincenzo Soprano.

Trenitialia placed a €450m order in November 2012 for 70 Jazz trains, which are being assembled in Piedmont at Alstom's Savigliano plant. Fourteen of the trains will be used in Piedmont and five are already in use on SFM6 services between Turin and Asti.

As well as Piedmont, the EMUs will also delivered to Lombardia, Umbria, Marche, Abruzzo, Lazio and Calabria in regional, suburban and airport express configurations.

The 160km/h trains are being delivered in four, five, and six-car formations, with the latter seating up to 292 passengers

Does anyone know what the plan is for this facility which seems to have in place now all trackwork?

Thank you, the snow around the Etna is quite known, but I have never seen a Circumetnea train in the snow.

The scenery is stunning, but will these trains be replaced some time soon? They look to be at least 50 years old… Actually who is mostly using these trains?

There is an order for new trains from Newag, delivery next summer I think.

They did some modernization works earlier this decade, putting a section between Adrano and S.M. Licodia mostly underground.

The southernmost sector has been transformed into Catania Metro several years ago.

It's such a beautiful scenery railway around Mount Etna (where you can ski in winter btw.).
Unfortunately, the urban penetration into Catania has been ruined by the will to build a heavy metro line, which mostly takes the alignment of the Etna Railway. This wouldn't be as bad, but the sad facepalm comes from the fact that both systems will never be interoperable: The Circumetenea tracks are narrow gauge while the Metro line is built in standard gauge!

They could have made a fantastic integration by letting Circumetnea trains run well into the city using the modern tunnels. Now instead they have a line break somewhere in the suburbs, making the Etna trains less attractive and the heavy Metro line with its 6 stations (maybe 8 already?), build over decades, a graveyard for public funds for the joy of construction companies.

Upgrading the narrow gauge line around Etna to standard gauge is nearly impossible due to its mountain railway characteristics with tight curves and steep grades.

See the english wikipedia article which also includes a map showing the loose-loose situation for both lines:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metropolitana_di_Catania

As you can notice on the metro map inside the wiki article, instead of focussing on the ultrashort metro line (3.8km), which does not even run on Sundays, they have started works on a new branch detaching from the existing line, and having 3 stations!
Once it should reach the airport, but this one is far away and has already a railway line nearby which could be integrated, but of course no station there at all!

CNR and Hitachi shortlisted for Ansaldo sale
Tuesday, October 14, 2014

FINMECCANICA CEO Mr Mauro Moretti confirmed to a hearing of the industry committee of the Italian Senate on October 14 that the company has shortlisted CNR and Hitachi for the acquisition of its rail assets.

Moretti told the committee that while both CNR and Hitachi are "interested in having bases in Italy" neither manufacturer has yet submitted a binding offer for AnsaldoBreda and Ansaldo STS.

The sale of the two business units is part of Finmeccanica's plan to refocus its business on the aerospace and defence sectors and reduce its €4.8bn debt.
