Hey!

I need your help. I am in Italy to travel with the last "old: Pendolino ETR 450.
They should be in service in IC 552/553 and 560/561 today and tomorrow. Then the age of ETR 450 is finished!

I am sitting in IC 552 right now. Unfortunately it is a classic IC coach train, no ETR 450.

So my question to you:
Where can I use the Pendolino 450 today or tomorrow? Could somebody of you (I don't speak Italian) check an Italian train Fan-page?
Or ask in an Italian railway forum for me?

Thank you!

I asked there, but if I understand correctly (I haven't heard all the thread), it seems that one of the last units in running order (450.001) broke down on 9.12.2014, with trains IC 552 and 561 using hauled stock from then on.

You might try to look for it on IC 553 and 560 today or tomorrow, but it is unlikely you will find an ETR 450.

No, not yet.
There's only a stretch between Milan and Treviglio and between Padova and Mestre.
From Treviglio to Brescia it's under construction and the rest of the line is planned. Works should start soon.

However, to be precise, the speed will be lower than the other high-speed lines: it will probably be 220-230 km/h.

Maybe someone else will be able to be more precise than me

The last day of an ETR 450 in regular service was the 9.12.2014. Unit 450.004 was running as IC 552 Reggio Calabria-Roma Termini when it stopped in Latina (near Rome) because of a technical problem. It has been capable to restart around 3 hours later, without passengers (which meanwhile were transferred on another northbound train). Since then, all trains scheduled to be made by ETR 450s were run with conventional stock.

15 trains were built around 1988, the last units were planned to be used until 13.12.2014, these were 450.003, 4, 10 and 11.

Units 10 and 11 were retired recently because they reached their mileage limit before revision (which wasn't worth for a few weeks of service), so the last units in regular service were 3 and 4, but following the breakdown of 4 December, Trenitalia decided to retire earlier the last two sets.

I find the exterior design of the ETR450 quite outdated for the time they had been introduced already. Straight lines were all the rage around that time, yet Trenitalia went for trends that had been out of fashion for at least a decade, if you compare the looks of the ETR 450 with other European train designs that came alive around those years.

The ETR 450 are basically the series production of the single ETR 400 prototype, which entered service in 1976: https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elettrotreno_FS_ETR.400

It was a 4 car EMU, while the ETR 450 had 9 cars.

The ETR 400 took itself the design from the Y 0160, a single car EMU built in 1971: https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automotrice_FIAT_Y_0160

So the first series-built ETR 450 entered service 17 years after its prototype, that's why they look older than they are.

The Y 0160 never entered service as it was a pure prototype train, while the ETR 401 was used until 1983 on some services (like Roma-Ancona-Rimini), being thus taken out of service early, like most trains built which remained unique model.

The same design was used for the S-443 Platanito unit of RENFE, again built only in one unit. All other Pendolino trains had a different design, first used by the ETR 460, and later the design of the ETR 600/610.

It is too late for you, but this may be of interest to others.

Some ETR 450s will be used again the upcoming holidays on special trains on peak days, between Reggio Calabria and Rome.

These should be:
* IC 16041 on 20, 23, 30 Dec, 5 Jan Roma-Reggio Calabria
* IC 16040 on 24, 28 Dec, 4, 6 Jan Reggio Calabria-Roma

These should appear only on the online timetable starting from 17th December, not on printed timetables. There might be other ETR 450-operated extra ICs as well. However, there should be just 2 sets in usable conditions.

I cannot guarantee about that info, it's just what has been posted on the italian forum quoted above (www.ferrovie.it).

New Italy – Austria regional services launched
Wednesday, December 17, 2014

REGIONAL rail links between Austria and Italy were stepped up significantly on December 14 with the launch of hourly services on the Fortezza - San Candido – Lienz corridor as part of the Euregio initiative between the Austrian province of Tyrol and the Italian autonomous region of South Tyrol

The expansion of services was celebrated with the opening of a new station at Versciaco/Vierschach, a few kilometres from the border in South Tyrol by Mr Florian Mussner the Italian region's councillor for mobility and his Tyrolean counterpart Mrs Ingrid Felipe. The station has direct access to the popular ski area of Monte Elmo.

Regular-interval services now depart Fortezza for Lienz every hour between 06.50 and 18.50 (albeit with a gap between 10.50 and 12.50), with trains departing Lienz between 05.50 and 17.50. The services are operated using Stadler ETR 170 Flirt EMUs

This station somehow remembers me of the styles and finishing used on Milano subway line 3. Not the colors, just the overall ambiance.

True, especially the ceiling and blind people's guides on the floor

From Rail Journal, South Tyrol is in news again:

Merano - Malles electrification approved
Monday, December 22, 2014

THE provincial council of the Italian autonomous region of South Tyrol on December 16 approved the electrification of the Merano - Malles line, entrusting planning and project management to Strutture Trasporto Alto Adige and Alto Adige Finance under a €56m contract

The council says investment in the line is necessary because of sharp rises in passengers and subsequent overcrowding on the line, which is now carrying 2 million passengers per year.

Electrification is considered the best way to improve service and after the project is complete it will be possible to offer a service every 30 minutes, and use longer trains, which will transport up to 276 passengers. The line will also offer an hourly direct connection from Bolzano to Malles, without requiring a change in Merano
