Trenitalia orders more Vivaltos
01 Apr 2015

ITALY: Trenitalia has placed an order for a further 70 Vivalto double-deck regional coaches, AnsaldoBreda announced on April 1.

The €98m order is an option on a contract signed in March 2010. It covers 14 push-pull driving cars to be manufactured at AnsaldoBreda’s plant in Pistoia, and 56 intermediate coaches which will be produced in Reggio Calabria.

A six-car Vivalto set has 724 seats and a total capacity of more than 1 500 passengers. The maximum speed is 160 km/h

Too far for that until the Germands build a decent high speed link to Basel and the Swiss build a new Basel-Luzern line and the Italians build a new Milano-Chiasso-(Lugano) line

No amount of new construction will bring Köln - Milano under four hours. Better to concentrate on having a good timetable on Köln - Basel (which is going to happen) and another one on Basel - Milano (which Trenitalia will try to sabotage)

Any speed gains a new Mailano - Lugano line could achieve could also be achieved with better timetabling. Especially for destinations beyond Milano.

Like a new Basel - Luzern line...

Yes but one must admit anyway that train travel in Switzerland is particularly
slow. Mountains can be an excuse sometimes but not on a trip like Basel to
Zurich, 85 km in 53 minutes non stop, that's not even 100 km/h mean speed.
Even Belgians do better than that...

It was a 4 car EMU, while the ETR 450 had 9 cars.

The ETR 400 took itself the design from the Y 0160, a single car EMU built in 1971: https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automotrice_FIAT_Y_0160

So the first series-built ETR 450 entered service 17 years after its prototype, that's why they look older than they are.

The Y 0160 never entered service as it was a pure prototype train, while the ETR 401 was used until 1983 on some services (like Roma-Ancona-Rimini), being thus taken out of service early, like most trains built which remained unique model.

The same design was used for the S-443 Platanito unit of RENFE, again built only in one unit. All other Pendolino trains had a different design, first used by the ETR 460, and later the design of the ETR 600/610.
The Y 0160 and the ETR 401 around 1975/1976. The first half of the ETR 401 running alone can be seen, which is very rare, as it has no cab on one side. Pendolinos are composed of independent "traction units" (groups of 2 or 3 coaches), which (those with a cab and a pantograph) can move alone but never do so except in workshops.

I see that it will be used to connect Rome and Milan. Will it stop in Florence? I'll be in Italy in June and I hope I can get a chance to ride it as I will be travelling from Rome to Florence.

Probably, since most services on the line also call at Firenze SMN station.

Not so sure. In the first times they will run only no-stop from Rome to Milan.

In December they should be enough to establish stopping services in Bologna and Florence.

This line is very slow but I believe it would have, as some other lines in the island, a large touristic potential if marketed right with new rolling stock.
