European towns (2000-50'000 people)

Hello! I want to know the most beautiful European villages.

SPANIARD TOWNS (I)

Úbeda

Nearest city: Jaén
Population: 36.342 hab.

Úbeda is a town in Andalusia. Both this village and the neighboring village of Baeza benefited for extensive patronage in the early 16th century resulting in the construction of a series of Renaissance style palaces and churches, which have been preserved across the centuries. In 2003, UNESCO declared the historic cores and monuments of these two towns a World Heritage Site.

Baeza

Nearest city: Jaén
Population: 16.012 hab.

Baeza is a town in Andalusia. The town has existed since Roman times, when it was called Beatia, but it is chiefly known today as having many of the best-preserved examples of Italian Renaissance architecture in Spain. UNESCO added Baeza and Ubeda to the World Heritage Sites list in 2003.

Santillana del Mar

Nearest city: Santander
Population: 4.022 hab.

Santillana del Mar is a historic town situated in Cantabria, Spain. Certain features of this historical town includes Altamira Caves and many historic buildings, attracting thousands of holiday-makers every year.

There is an old saying that Santillana del Mar is The Town of Three Lies, since it is neither a Saint (Santo), nor flat (llana) and has no sea (Mar) as implied by the town's name. However, the name actually derives from Santa Juliana (or Santa Illana) whose remains are in the kept in the Colegiata, a Romanesque church and former Benedictine monastery.

I think over 10.000 is a small town, not a village.

I added information in the first message.

SPANIARD TOWNS(II)

San Lorenzo de El Escorial

Nearest city: Madrid
Population: 17.346 hab.

Situated northwest of the capital, it is the site of the Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial and the Valley of the Fallen.

Cadaqués

Nearest city: Girona
Population: 2.660 hab.

Cadaqués is a town in Catalonia. It is on a bay near the Cap de Creus peninsula, on the Costa Brava.

The interesting submarine life of this sleepy fishing village was studied for several years by psychologist Françoise Ardré, long before Cadaqués was discovered and transformed into a tourism destination.

Carmona

Nearest city: Seville
Population: 27.221 hab.

Carmona is built on a ridge overlooking the central plain of Andalusia. It has a thriving trade in wine, olive oil, grain and cattle; and the annual fair, which is held in April, affords good opportunity of observing the costumes and customs of southern Spain.

At least in Spain populations under 20,000 are considered villages.

But... I don't know the difference between village and town, both words in Spanish translates as "pueblo".

Well, I haven't really been to many villages, but that's where pigs roam the countryside and everyone is uneducated and is a farmer

A town is like a small city.

Okay, thanks.

The title is wrong. It's not European Villages, but European Towns. Sorry, my English isn't good .

So, should I rename the thread "European towns < 50'000 people" or something like that?

A special thread for villages (under 5000 people) would be pretty interesting then.
Fine examples, by the way!

That German town is incredible. Are all those houses original or reconstructed?

The small swedish town of Nora with 6 496 inhabitants is located in Västmanland.
Nora was founded at the end of the 13th century.
Not to be confused with the perhaps more well known Mora in Dalarna.

Small Swedish town of Eksjö in Småland is a town with 9 605 people.

In 2003, Eksjö celebrated the 600th anniversary of its original charter granted by Erik of Pommern.

But it was first mentioned in the 14th century.
