Yes i agree about Germany, its culture, people and the actual landscape is luring enough

Best to see what the locals have to say...but if i could i'd like to move to a country like Sweden.

Sweden is great too. I dont know, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Norway, Denmark, Finland all these places are GREAT places to live. I have to pick one

I've only been to Austria/Vienna though but that is one very beautiful city!

I am German (Düsseldorf, getting around quite a lot).

The living standard is quite excellent given you earn good money.
Now here is my point: If you don't speak German it will be quite difficult to get a decent job and (maybe more important) to gain respect (you don't want to drop into some albanian/kosovar subculture, do you? - you want to become a professor?).

Btw: Becoming a university professor (there are no colleges in G) in Germany is very hard and often takes a decade.

Why don't you just start learning German?

No trouble getting a Schengen-visa?

I suggest, you come to Germany for a vacation and decide later. To be honest, it is much harder to find a job in Germany than in the USA. It will be hard. But i don't wanna scare you.

So, come and see, how you like it.

Getting a job is difficult in Leipzig and other parts of the DDR. But in western Germany like Munich, Stuttgart or Frankfurt it is easy. Unemplyment in Bavaria is 5.6% and in BadenWuertemberg around 5.8%. Thats not much different than in the US.

If you're healthy, you really want to work and you accept a humble salary, you will get a job even in Saxony and other better areas of the soviet zone.

But you really can´t enjoy life or experience culture, get to know the country and so on when you work in a factory the whole week and only get paid a few Euros.

I think RednBlack really wants to have a high standard of living and that would only be possible if he could immediately continue his career (become a professor or something similar).
I don´t think this would work...job chances are not really good in subjects like history and without being able to speak German it might be quite impossible to find anything matching your expectations.
Learn some German, inform yourself about possible jobs (universities etc.? probably there are some courses held in english at some universities) and get a work permit before you come here.
Just travelling to Germany without being prepared is not a good idea in my opinion.

Well Im not leaving the United States to live in some poor area of Eastern Germany to work my ass off. Im not crazy lol
