New entrepreneurs throng SME business fair

Special Correspondent

“Aimed at helping SMEs come out of economic recession”

All business: Bank officials offering consultancy to participants at the fair in Vellore on Friday. —

VELLORE: A large number of new entrepreneurs and owners of existing units thronged the SME (Small and Medium Enterprises) Business Fair organised by the State Bank of India (SBI), Siruthozhil Branch, Vellore, in coordination with the District Industries Centre (DIC), Vellore, at a marriage hall in Gandhinagar on Friday.

P.N. Viswanathan, Deputy General Manager (DGM), SME, SBI, Chennai, said that the fair was organised with the objective of enabling the SMEs to come out of economic recession which hit them badly. The recent global economic recession played more havoc with the SMEs than bigger industries, to the extent of shaking their business confidence. While bigger industries were able to come out of the recession, the SMEs went through bad times. While existing SMEs were hit, fresh entrepreneurs were hesitant to set up SMEs. “We want to restate our commitment to the SME sector so that they regain their business confidence,” he said.

The DGM said that the business fair was not a loan mela but a forum to interact with new entrepreneurs and help them with advice on how to go about setting up their business in a profitable manner, as well as to entertain loan applications from them. Bank officials including Sudalaimani, Regional Manager, SBI, Vellore, G. Parthasarathy, Assistant General Manager, RASMECCC and SARC (Retail Assets Small and Medium Enterprises City Credit Centre and Stressed Assets Resolution Centre), Vellore, K. Dhanasekaran, Chief Manager, SBI, Siruthozhil Branch, Vellore, and branch managers of the SBI branches in Walajapet, Ranipet and BHEL provided advice to the new and existing entrepreneurs and received loan applications.

Officials of the DIC explained to them the process of getting MSME (micro small and medium enterprises) registration, which is a must for obtaining loans under the Credit Guarantee Trust for Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (CGTMSE) Scheme, without any collateral. A total of 225 persons visited the Business Fair, which went on from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Mr. Viswanathan said that under SBI Smile, the bank gave an equity assistance of 7.5 per cent of the project cost or Rs.10 lakh, whichever was lower, to professionally qualified first generation entrepreneurs. Under the CGTMSE scheme, the bank provided loans even without insisting on collateral for new unemployed entrepreneurs, if the entrepreneur did not have any collateral to offer, but had a good business plan, he said.

T.N. Duraimurugan, Vellore district president of the South Indian Viswakarma Unorganised Construction Workers' Association, said that about 10 goldsmiths from Tirupattur who approached the SBI officials at the fair with requests to provide collateral-free loans to them to enable them to purchase modern equipments for their goldsmith business were told that they were not eligible for collateral-free loans. He said that on a petition submitted to the Sub-Collector, Tirupattur, seeking industrial loan for his goldsmith business, the latter wrote to the General Manager, DIC, asking him to devote special attention to the petition, take action and convey the details to the petitioner. When he approached the DIC, the latter asked him to visit the SME business fair and submit his application. But when he visited the fair and met the officials, they are demanding surety for a loan. This is the case with many other goldsmiths from Tirupattur, who are being made to run from pillar to post, he said.

Asked about the complaint, Mr. Viswanathan said that the goldsmiths concerned were told that they were not eligible for collateral-free loans, but asked to approach the SBI, Tirupattur, to meet their requirements. He said that collateral-free loans could be given only to unemployed, but professionally qualified new entrepreneurs who had a good business plan, but did not have any collateral to offer. The idea is that such entrepreneurs should not be denied the opportunity of getting profitably self-employed just because they did not have any collateral to offer. Such loans were not applicable to persons who are already running a business, he said.

April 1: The Central Zoo Authority of India (CZA) has allocated Rs 19.73 crore to upgrade the Amirithi mini zoo into a small zoo in 20 hectares of land in Thellai reserve forest area in the district.
Approving the proposal sent by conservator of forest of Vellore zone A.V. Venkatachalam in July 2008 to upgrade the mini zoo to make use of tourists’ inflow to the fort city, the CZA has given the nod to the proposal and allocated the fund for the ambitious project.

Within three years, we will complete the construction of the zoo,” Mr Venkatachalam told this newspaper.
The new zoo would be constructed after razing down the existing mini zoo, which was established in 1967 in 10 hectares of land. It would have all infrastructure to ensure the safety of the animals and visitors. Each enclosure of the animals would have withdrawal area, exhibit area and pond. Besides this, the zoo would have food storage, drainage, waste disposal and security system.
A pair of major animals - tiger, leopard, bear, primates and different varieties of snakes, water birds and deer – would be added in the small zoo. Besides this, the existing animals would be retained. At present there are 18 species including deer, crocodile, peacock and snake. “It will also have a full time veterinary doctor, wild life biologist, pharmacist and a caretaker for each animal enclosure. It will also help to treat the injured wild animals from different parts of the district,” said district forest officer of Vellore T.V. Manjunatha.

Corporation limit

Hey friends, recently i heard that Vellore Corporation is extended with Arcot, Ranipet and Walajapet, to make it as a largest corporation.

Those individual towns are located about 30kms away from Vellore.

Will this form a city?????

If this is the case y not Erode can be integrated with
Chithode(7kms),Bhavani(11kms)-Komaraplm(14),Nasiyanur(13), Perundurai(18), Tiruchengode(18),Sankagiri(18).

Since Bhavani, Chithode, Nasiyanur, Pallipalayam(just 2kms) are immediate next to the city.

But Erode is not even incuded with its Pallipalayam(just after river cauvery) and SPB Colony....

http://www.hindu.com/2010/04/06/stor...0654630300.htm

Material consumption has been brought down from 68 % in 2008-09 to 57 % in 2009-10

BHEL Ranipet to revive production of wind electric generators

VELLORE: The Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, Ranipet, has for the first time crossed the Rs.2,500-crore mark in turnover and the Rs.500-crore mark in Profit Before Tax (PBT) by achieving Rs.2,530 crore in turnover and Rs.571 crore of PBT during the financial year 2009-10.

The Ranipet unit was able to cross the PBT of Rs.500 crore and achieve an increase in PBT by 119 per cent over the previous year mainly owing to its value-added engineering practices and reduction in material consumption.

Besides, it was able to cross 2.36-lakh tonnes in despatches, by achieving 2,37,492 tonnes during the year. The company's financial turnover tripled while physical turnover (despatches) doubled from the level of achievement in 2005-06.

“The achievement has been possible thanks to the cooperation of the staff and concerted efforts of the company in reducing its material cost through learning from experience. Our focus was on reducing material cost from day one, and this yielded good results,” said A. Chandrababu, General Manager/in-charge, BHEL, Ranipet, at the annual press conference held at the factory in Ranipet on Monday. The Ranipet BHEL has brought down the material consumption from 68 per cent in 2008-09 to 57 per cent in 2009-10.

Indigenisation of corrosion resistant plates, SS wires, gearboxes, etc. yielded savings of Rs.8 crore, while additional sources development for bearings for air pre-heaters (APH), and special fasteners for electrostatic precipitators (ESP) resulted in savings of Rs.10 crore. Strategic procurement of SS wires, steel plates and structural materials resulted in savings of Rs.20 crore. Further, savings to the tune of Rs. 62 crore was achieved through the conduct of 120 reverse auctions in the purchase of materials, he said.

The General Manager/in-charge said that BHEL Ranipet has an outstanding order book of Rs.7,462 crore compared to Rs.7,050 crore in 2008-09. Two orders have been bagged for supply of APH baskets for non-BHEL equipment from Reliance, Dahanu & Tata Power, Trombay, which is the first of its kind, and a breakthrough, which helped beat the competition from rivals.

The highest single order worth Rs.18 crore was bagged for spares from Damodar Valley Corporation, Mejia, West Bengal, while the highest cumulative order of 6,000 tonnes was bagged for the APH baskets towards O & M spares this year, as against 2,500 tonnes last year.

The unit received direct orders for supply of ESP for super-critical boilers for Barh Stage II 2x660 MW for Rs.196 crore from National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) through the international competitive bidding route.

Mr. Chandrababu said that BHEL Ranipet has developed in-house a new size of Primary Air Fan for 600 MW boilers, as a step to beat the competition from the Chinese bidders.

The in-house development of Backward Curved Plate bladed Radial Fan for high-pressure application would be introduced in the market in the coming years. While the BHEL Corporate has increased its capacity to deliver 15,000 MW of power equipment per annum this year, and was planning for an augmentation to 20,000 MW per annum by March 2012, BHEL Ranipet was planning to achieve its proportionate target in June 2011 itself.

While the company was working towards physical despatches of 3,00,000 tonnes in 2010-11, it was conducting a dialogue with its vendors for increasing the outsourcing quantum to 2,00,000 tonnes. It has added 53 new vendors during 2009-10, and increased the vendor base to 343. When asked about the opposition of the BHEL Ancillaries Association to any increase in the number of vendors on the grounds that it would lead to less orders for the existing vendors, Mr. Chandrababu said that BHEL's vendors are their partners. But, the BHEL Ranipet had to increase the number of vendors since the existing vendors were unable to meet its requirement of components.

If this is the case y not Erode can be integrated with
Chithode(7kms),Bhavani(11kms)-Komaraplm(14),Nasiyanur(13), Perundurai(18), Tiruchengode(18),Sankagiri(18).

Since Bhavani, Chithode, Nasiyanur, Pallipalayam(just 2kms) are immediate next to the city.

But Erode is not even incuded with its Pallipalayam(just after river cauvery) and SPB Colony....
It can be extended up to Bhavani

We had discussed this issue long back when the vellore corporation was formed before 2 yrs and its limits including many villages and towns 30km away.
The intention behind such a plan is not known and it is the fact that this large area can never be thought of a city atleast for another 10yrs.

corporation limit

ya. for a long time madurai is struggling to get integrated with tiruparankundram, which is the same as of pallipalayam and bhavani for Erode, which are just immediate next to the mentioned cities.

But both haven't succeeded, yet now.

I think Vellore is the first in India of such kind of Corporation to be formed around 35kms of radius, without any urban area.

Anyway its boundary has been finalised. wat about the total coverage area of the corporation.?

New Palar Bridge inaugurated

Friday, May 07, 2010

VELLORE: The much-awaited New Palar Bridge will be inaugurated by Minister for Law, Courts and Prisons Durai Murugan on Friday. It will be held under the presidentship of the Minister for Highways and Minor Ports Vellakovil Swaminathan at Virudhambut on the northern side of the bridge at 5 p.m. The bridge has been constructed by the National Highways and the State Highways Department, across the Palar in Vellore, at a cost of Rs.16.01 crore.

S. Jagathrakshakan, Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, would be the chief guest at the function.

The inauguration is being eagerly awaited by road-users of Vellore and Katpadi – the two places that the bridge connects – in view of the narrowness of the existing 35-year-old Polur Subramaniam Bridge. Moving of traffic at a snail's pace was not uncommon on the existing bridge whenever a vehicle got repaired in the middle of the structure or when a bullock cart passed through the bridge.

The new bridge has been constructed in place of the Old Palar Bridge, which crumbled about 17 years ago. With the inauguration of the new bridge, traffic on the Polur Subramaniam Bridge as well as the New Palar Bridge (formerly known as Old Katpadi Road) would be made one-way.

New traffic rules regarding the entry into the two bridges and the route to be taken by the different vehicles would be announced by Collector C. Rajendran at a meeting of the District Traffic Advisory Committee to be chaired by him at the Collectorate here at 10.30 a.m. on Friday.

Five New Bridges

The National Highways Department has taken over from the State Highways Department maintenance of the Cuddalore-Chittoor Road and the Katpadi-Gudiyatham Road, according to Durai Murugan, Minister for Law, Courts and Prisons.

Inaugurating the new bridge across the Palar connecting Vellore and Virudhambut at a function in Virudhambut on Friday, Mr. Durai Murugan said the Ministry of Highways and Minor Ports had sanctioned five more bridges in Vellore district – Kangeyanallur to Collectorate (Rs.7.50 crore), Thengal to Melvisharam (Rs.27.80 crore), Sadgar (Rs.6.40 crore), Kalavai to Vazhappandhal (Rs.5 crore) and Devasthanam bridge in Vaniyambadi.

New NH through Vellore/Tiruvanamalai to Villupuram-- NH-234

MANGALORE: Dakshina Kannada now has a new national highway in NH-234. This 715-km long Mangalore-Villupuram state highway that criss-crosses three southern states -- Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh has been upgraded to NH-234 and will connect Mangalore in Karnataka, and Villupuram sea port in Tamil Nadu. This highway, notified by the Union government under National Highways Act, will also touch AP.

The NH-234, which starts from Mangalore at Mahavir Circle, will connect Belthangady, Mudigere, Belur, Huliyar, Sira, Madhugiri, and Chintamani in Karnataka, Venkatagiri, Kota in AP, Pernampet, Gidiyattam, Katpadi, Vellore, Pushpagiri and Polur. It will end at Tiruvanamalai-Villupuram in Tamil Nadu. The NH-234 will overlap with NH-48 in chainage 0 to 19.2 up to B C Road where one takes a diversion towards Belthangady.

The New NH-234

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/c...ow/5857031.cms

This make sense, with respect to my previous posting, where the NH is taking the responsibility of maintaining the "Cuddalore-Chittoor Road and the Katpadi-Gudiyatham Road" SH.

Where in the world do we have "Villupuram sea port". I am wondering when these reporters will try to understand the logic behind the reporting. I think It should be Cuddlore as per the above para. So effectively NH-234 should be Mangalore - Cuddalore

L&T to widen Krishnagiri-Walajahpet section of NH-46

L&T to widen Krishnagiri-Walajahpet section of NH-46
A BUSINESS CORRESPONDENT , Monday, May 17, 2010, 10:19 Hrs [IST]

L&T Krishnagiri Walajahpet Tollway Pvt. Ltd, an SPV incorporated by Larsen & Toubro Ltd, has signed a concession agreement with National Highways Authority of India for six laning of the 148.30-km Krishnagiri-Walajahpet section of NH-46 in Tamil Nadu.

The project will be executed on a BOT-DBFO basis with a concession period of 30 years. The estimated Rs 1,450-crore project is scheduled to be completed within 30 months. The concessionaire is entitled to collect toll from the users of the highway during the concession period, including the construction period.

As part of NHDP-Phase V, NHAI is widening the existing four-lane stretches of the Golden Quadrilateral to six lanes. This corridor forms the main and preferred road connectivity between Chennai and Bengaluru, and caters to both commercial and passenger movement between the two cities.

With this project, L&T currently has 14 projects in its BOT roads portfolio, out of which seven are presently in operation phase, five in construction phase, and two in development phase, thus cumulating in a length of 5,500 lane kilometres, and a total investment of Rs 13,000 crore.

This is a welcome move, as the traffic on this section has increased heavily after four-laning. After this is completed no more following, slow moving trucks, which takes the two lanes at a time.

Hope the Walajapet - Chennai section will be awarded soon.
