Prof Viswanathan on Tuesday, said, “Cognizant has a long standing relationship with VIT and this is a proud moment for both of us. Cognizant had given job offers to 1643 students from various streams ,

The VIT Chancellor expressed confidence that this year they would achieve cent per cent placement for the students.

The new building constructed on a total area of one lakh square feet on the site, where the Travellers Bungalow earlier existed, would have a basement, ground floor and two floors above that.

Upgraded PHC in Anaicut fully computerised

http://www.hindu.com/2010/12/28/stor...2851740300.htm

“We are committed to building a healthy nation through quality and safety in healthcare services to all people with equity, respect, dignity and social justice to the utmost satisfaction of the community, particularly women and children. We will continuously improve upon our public health services through a holistic approach.” Thus reads the quality policy statement displayed in front of the Upgraded Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Anaicut in Vellore Health Unit District (HUD) in the name of the District Collector, the Deputy Director of Health Services (DDHS), Vellore Health Unit District (HUD) and the Medical Officer of the PHC.

Quality ensured

In keeping with the above policy, quality has been infused into the functioning of the PHC through its total computerisation, a process which has been completed recently, as part of the efforts made by the HUD administration to obtain the ISO (Indian Standards Organisation) certification for the PHC. K.S.T. Suresh, DDHS, Vellore HUD, said that computerisation enables the doctors to know at the click of a key the case history of the patient, the drugs prescribed previously and the stock position of medicines.

A visit by this correspondent to the upgraded PHC in Anaicut on Monday revealed that the staff at the PHC fed into the computer the details of each patient, such as their name, age, address, community (SC/ST/others, for the purpose of providing the benefits available for these categories) and recorded the fingerprint of the patient, thus completing the process of registration of the patient. S. Gopinath, software engineer, Future Media IT Solutions, Vellore, which has designed the software for the PHC operations, said that on arrival at the PHC, each patient is given a hospital number, which is unique for the PHC and tokens are issued on a first-come, first-served basis. When the patient enters the doctor's room on being called by his token number, the doctor enters the hospital number in the computer. Immediately, the doctor is able to see the case history of the patient, if he is a previous patient. If the patient is new, the doctor enters afresh the case details, which will be useful for future reference.

The system facilitates the feeding of the X-ray and scan reports so that the doctor can view the reports on the computer, without the need for manual fetching of the reports, thus facilitating quick diagnosis and expeditious commencement of treatment. “At present, we are able to feed only the reports. We are working out a plan to enable the doctor to view the actual X-ray film and actual scan picture on the computer monitor,” said Mr. Gopinath.

When the blood pressure, pulse or body mass index (BMI) is abnormal, the relevant words are highlighted in red in the monitor so that the doctor can prescribe the correct treatment. The doctor feeds into the computer the type of drugs to be given (with dosage) and the type of injection to be given, if necessary.

Dr. Suresh said that when a doctor enters the name of a particular drug, the computer would give information on the stock position of the particular drug. He said that the software also contains other inputs such as queuing of the patients so that the doctor could call for the case details of a homogenous group and prepare reports.

“In future, we will be connecting all PHCs in the HUD through the VPN (Virtual Private Network) over broadband, so that the case details of any patient can be obtained from any PHC in the HUD,” he said.

Facilities inspected

A team of officials from the Trans-Pacific Certification Ltd., New Delhi, an agency appointed by the ISO, visited the Anaicut PHC on Monday and inspected the facilities for the purpose of certification. According to Dr. Suresh, the team has stated that the Anaicut PHC is the first one in India to undertake computerisation. The team would visit the upgraded PHCs in Thimiri, Lalapet and Banavaram on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for the purpose of inspection for ISO certification, which is being done through the Tamil Nadu State Rural Health Mission.

Work on compound wall for garden to begin soon

http://www.hindu.com/2011/01/10/stor...1050380300.htm

Construction of a compound wall for the proposed botanical garden at Yelagiri Hills is likely to begin in a week. Coming up on an area of 90 acres, this will be the “largest botanical garden in the State,” according to officials.

“Funds to the tune of Rs. 1.3 crore have been sanctioned for the construction of the compound wall and the work order has been issued,” an official from the district administration said.

The garden is coming up at Palakaniyur, which is located near Nilavoor and is expected to be a major tourist attraction, officials said.

“The entire project cost is Rs. 20 crore. Area wise, this will be the State's largest botanical garden, when compared to other gardens in Tamil Nadu, including the one at Udhagamandalam,” he said. The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore, and Horticulture Department of Vellore had inspected the site to decide upon various aspects, including type of plants. The soil condition was examined and soil test performed, the official noted.

“The proposal for the design tender has been sent to the government. The government has to take a decision on whether the design and execution of the garden should be undertaken combined or separate. The design is yet to be approved,” the official said.

Though the design is yet to be finalised, the garden would have plants, ponds, amusement facilities, landscaping, children play areas and walking paths, he added.

Tourism officials said that Yelagiri was receiving around 6,000 tourists a month and the inflow was more during weekends and holidays. There were several enquiries from tourists in Chennai on how to reach Yelagiri, accommodation and other facilities available.

This showed that Yelagiri was steadily gaining popularity among tourists, another official said.

Stone laid for common facility centre

http://www.hindu.com/2011/03/19/stor...1952820300.htm

The foundation stone for the Rs.9.27-crore common facility centre (CFC) of the engineering cluster in Ranipet was laid by A. Chandrababu, Executive Director, Boiler Auxiliaries Plant (BAP), Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Ranipet at the Thiruvalam-Ponnai Road near Ranipet on Thursday.

The CFC, which is being established with grants of Rs.619.39 lakh from the Union Government and Rs.97.21 lakh from the Tamil Nadu Government, would come up on a 6.5-acre site located in the villages of Sripadanallur and Thenpalli, and purchased by Vellore Energy Technologist (P) Ltd. (VET), which is the Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV), that is to execute the project.

According to R. Amirthakatesan, Chairman of VET, the 24th Steering Committee of MSE-CDP (Micro Small Enterprises-Cluster Development Programme) approved the project at its meeting held in New Delhi on December 24. The Central and State grants would be utilised for the purchase of machinery. The SPV itself has contributed Rs.109.35 lakh, while it would be raising a bank loan of Rs.104.13 lakh for the construction of the buildings to house the machinery and other facilities.

The VET Chairman said that the establishment of the BHEL/BAP led to the setting up of several engineering industries in the micro small medium enterprises (MSME) sector in and around Ranipet, resulting in the economic development of Ranipet and surrounding villages, besides the development of education facilities, health sector, transport and trade in the region. The presence of so many MSME units in the engineering sector brought for them the status of SIPCOT (State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu) Engineering Cluster, under the CDP of the Union Ministry of MSME. The project report was submitted to the Central government through the State government by including the machineries in consultation with the BHEL, which is the major industry to which the MSME units were supplying machinery components, he said.

K.G. Raghunathan, Managing Director of VET, said that the objective of establishing the VET was to encourage the development of micro engineering industries with an investment of less than Rs.25 lakh. The CFC would comprise fabrication-cum-machine shop facilities, testing centre equipped with laboratory facility for testing the quality of raw materials and finished goods, skill development centre for training to upgrade the skills of the workers in the member units, research & development facility to meet the power sector engineering requirements, and the facility for complementing the process at the firm level for high-end work.

The testing centre would carry out non-destructive test, hardness test, welding quality test, crack test, calibration and X-ray, while the skill development centre would facilitate the upgrading of the skills of machine operators, fitters, welders, gas cutters, lab technicians, supervisors, and software (Auto CAD) personnel.

Mr. Chandrababu said that the BHEL, Ranipet would extend to the cluster all possible advice and help in its growth. He wanted the CFC to be utilised by the micro industries. Thanks to the BHEL possessing orders for the next nine years, the order position of the micro industries would increase in future. A. Muthuvezhappan, Deputy Director, MSME-Development Institute, Chennai said that the CFC in Ranipet was the 11th to be established by MSME under the CDP in Tamil Nadu. Sigamani, Senior Manager, Canara Bank, Ranipet said that the bank was happy to finance the cluster for the construction of the buildings and to meet the working capital requirements of the project. M.P. Jayakumar and C.V. Rajagopal, Assistant General Managers of BHEL, Ranipet spoke.

S. Sivagnanam, Director, MSME-DI, who presided, advised the MSME sector to utilise the opportunity and come up with innovative proposals for implementing the cluster schemes in Tamil Nadu. Matches, coir, automobiles and wet grinder are the other clusters being implemented in Tamil Nadu, he said.

Passenger train on Vellore-Villupuram line soon

VELLORE: Passenger train services will soon be introduced on the Villupuram-Vellore section, which was converted into broad gauge recently, said K J S Naidu, railway safety commissioner, south zone.

Naidu and his team inspected the 150-km stretch of the track for three days and upon completion on Saturday, expressed hope that train services on the track would be made possible as soon the technical problems were rectified. He, however, did not elaborate on when the decision would be taken but said that the track needed no more inspection.

After completion of the broad gauge conversion work, the first level safety inspection was conducted along the track last March. Some of the problems identified at that time were rectified and the next level of inspection was scheduled to be conducted in February, but was postponed by a week.
