Ayala Land launching new hotel brands

ABS-CBNnews.com

MANILA -- Ayala Land Inc. eyes to increase its hotel rooms to almost 2,000 this year and to 4,000 by 2015, and take advantage of the booming Philippine economy.

Antonino Aquino, president at Ayala Land, said the property firm will add 534 rooms this year following the opening of Holiday Inn & Suites in Makati and the Seda boutique hotel in Davao.

"We really intend to be aggressive to be able to take advantage of the current positive economic environment," Aquino said after the company's annual stockholders' meeting on Wednesday.

The firm has 1,426 hotel rooms at present and 947 of these belong to the InterContinental Hotel in Makati, Raffles Makati, Fairmont Hotels & Resorts in Makati, and the Cebu City Marriott Hotel. Some 150 units are located in Palawan, while the remaining 329 are under the brand Seda.

Ayala Land is set to launch new hotel brands this year amid the buoyant tourism industry, Aquino said.

The firm will be launching an affordable hotel brand and three sites--Bacolod, Iloilo, and Muntinlupa--are being considered for the project.

Aquino also shared the firm is mulling to launch Seda Suites in Bonifacio Global City.

Meanwhile, Ayala Land is planning to add 125,000 square meters of retail space this year as it opens shopping malls in Fairview, Quezon City; Bacolod; Molino, Cavite; and the previous site for the UP Integrated School. The firm will also be expanding the Cebu Center Ayala Land, Landmark in Trinoma, and Bonifacio High Street in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig.

Aside from new hotels and shopping malls, the firm is also looking at launching 69 residential projects this year, valued at P129 billion.

Nice shot, just look at the contrast, opulence surrounded by working men's homes.

there are rich people living in those barangays.

the contrast is more about american-style spacious urban planning vs. spanish-barangay style urban planning.

ngayon ko lang narinig ang term na "Spanish-barangay style"....

Definitely, Filipino town centers or "bayan" are spanish styled.. where the local church and munisipyo are situated.
But I'm not too sure about barangays..

But I do see the contrast... IMO - it's more like the old and new divide.. and at some level, rich and poor divide..

That barangay across C5 from SM Aura is Barangay Pembo. Some of my friends who study in Don Bosco and St. Paul live in Pembo. Those houses look ugly from above but when you go down in street level it isn't really a poor place. Heck my friend even parks his bmw outside his house at Sampaguita St., Pembo. Dyan din ako naglalaro ng basketball nung highschool pa ko (aren't plazas and basketball courts the only public spaces in Filipinos' consciousness?)
_______________________________________
This consciousness is shaped by our history.
long story short:

Spanish-era Plaza Complex and Bajo La Campana:
There was no sense of 'private property' during this period because everything was owned by feudal lords and the church. Bajo La Campana system was introduced - the louder you hear the sound of church bells the more important you are in society.

Plaza Complex: At the north of the plaza is a church. At the east is the municipal hall. at the west is the marketplace. at the south are mansions/houses of the alta sociedad. There was no importance given to parks. Surrounding this plaza complex were houses of the working class. Narrow roads called eskinita were preferred rather than spacious avenues. Most houses were made of wood and coconut husk since the colonial government did not invest in public housing.

Since most people rely on agriculture and cant afford to live in towns, the colonial government established smaller churches called 'parokya' in smaller towns that would be called barangays.

American-era of private property and subdivisions:
Only during the American colonial period that parks were given importance. In Manila, Rizal Park is the only big park. Had not for Daniel Burnham, Manila wont have any large park. Aside from plazas and parks, basketball became a popular sport and made covered courts a center for public gatherings.

The Americans instituted civil government, stripping the church any political power. To institutionalized the separation between church and state, all provincial capitols are built away from the plaza and the church. They also gave people the right to own private properties. Subdivisions became popular residential zones outside the spanish-era barangays. Roads and tree-line avenues were built than narrow eskinita pathways.
_______________________
So that contrast between BGC and Barangay Pembo is more of the difference between spanish-era barangay urban planning and american-era spacious urban planning than wealth. aerial images can be deceiving sometimes. When you go down there you'll see Pembo as a progressive barangay and home to many middle class, only that their roofs were left unpainted for years. plazas and covered courts are the only public spaces as in all barangays in the country.

It's the fourth building in BHS Central. The 5-storey fully-airconditioned building will house cinemas & SSI stores.
