Albanian railways are ranked on 8th place on world. From end, for regret.
To be honest, I do not see a chance to improve much infrastructure even over the next decade.

Don't worry guys, once the roads are built the government will start building railways. I don't know if it's good economics, but it's certainly proven to be good politics.

On a statistical website of Albania, i found figures of the amount of passengers of the Albanian railway network. I added them on wikipedia.

To compare: the annual passenger kilometres of Albania in 2013 were reached by Dutch railways in the same year in .... 6 hours.

On the other hand, there's a new fancy intermodal terminal beein built in Tirana that includes trains. So I guess the government are planning improvments.

Albania needs a railway connection with Macedonia, IMO.

I'm not sure... They closed down the rail connection between the capital city and Durrės months ago.. That's not a decision of a government that would like to reinvest in the railways.

The segment between Tirana,Airport,Durres is the only economically feasible one .

The project that you brought is the approved one so you are correct on that one . Works have not started yet , however i think they will .

The train would stop on that terminal and after that you would take the tram .

P.S The rail connection is not closed , is just that the tirana station was demolished because works have started ( although they are currently on hold ) to built the extension of the main bulevard of tirana , which is the most major investment in tirana in the last century .

However as i said , the works are currently on hold ( the boulevard , the tram , and the intermodal station that you have above ) , reason being is political and i think they will be paused for 1 more year when the new elections are done .

Albania approves Tirana – Durres reconstruction
Friday, April 10, 2015

ALBANIA's Council of Ministers approved a draft law on April 8 authorising funding for the reconstruction of the 38km line from the port of Durres to the capital Tirana

The legislation will enable the Ministry of Finance to fund the project through the European Union's Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF) using grants administered by the European Bank for Reconstruction and development (EBRD).

The EBRD has already financed a €1.2m feasibility study into the modernisation of the line, which has seen little investment since it was completed in 1948

Trains return to outskirts of Tiranė

Passenger trains between Durrės and Kashar have restarted.
ALBANIA: A revived passenger service between Durrės and a modernised station at Kashar, 7·6 km from central Tiranė, were inaugurated by parliamentary Speaker Ilir Meta and Minister of Transport & Infrastructure Edmond Haxhinasto on May 26.

Two coaches and a T669 diesel locomotive have been modernised for the service of seven trains each way per day, which is expected to be popular with students as the fare of 70 lekė is cheaper than by bus

New carraiges I travelled from Durres to Tirana in December 2006 and almost every bench and widow was broken. It was the most dilapitadated train I have ever travelled in.

HSH timetable 2017

Anybody knew about Albanian Railways services in 2017 ?
HSH suspended all traffic last summer due to lack of money to pay the bills for fuel and I don't knew if trains are back already. I plan take a train from Vlore to Tirana this spring.

Seat 61 reported in March:
"After all Albanian train services were stopped last year for financial reasons, a limited service appears to be operating between Durres and Kashar."

Children along villages train routes used to throw stones and put all kinds of barriers. I remember this 25-30 years ago because I traveled in one. Since then most likely the culture probably has changed a bit. It's good to see a new carriage. I hope they maintain it and introduce a passenger service. Right now Tirane-Durres(passenger) makes financial sense and maybe Shkoder-Podgorica (for freight). During the dictatorship of communism this was a popular way of traveling. Not so much anymore.
